%20gave%20me%20an%20example%20of%20how%20the%20program%20works.%20The%20kids%20made%20a%20salad%20and%20Bill%20asked%20them%20about%20taking%20out%20particular%20ingredients.%20They%20understood%20that%20all%20the%20ingredients%20were%20necessary%20to%20make%20a%20great%20salad%20and%20that%20it%20would%20be%20incomplete%20if%20one%20were%20missing.%20The%20kids%20made%20the%20connection%20between%20that%20salad%20and%20their%20social%20world.%20Powerful,%20positive%20stuff!%20Bill%20asked%20me%20if%20I%20wanted%20to%20cook%20with%20the%20kids.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20could%20I%20turn%20down%20the%20opportunity?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20couldn't.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYesterday%20was%20the%20big%20day.%20I%20took%20my%20son,%20Brooks,%20who%20always%20helps%20me%20in%20the%20kitchen%20when%20I%20cook.%20He%20was%20very%20excited%20about%20the%20class%20and%20had%20been%20telling%20his%20teachers%20and%20friends%20about%20it.%20I%20picked%20him%20up%20from%20school%20early%20and%20off%20we%20went%20to%20Haley%20House,%20which%20is%20located%20in%20the%20Dudley%20section%20of%20Roxbury%20in%20Boston.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20cafe%20is%20very%20hip%20and%20cool,%20with%20exposed%20brick%20walls%20and%20hardwood%20floors.%20It%20has%20a%20warm,%20cozy%20atmosphere%20that%20makes%20you%20want%20to%20hang%20out.%20While%20I%20chatted%20with%20Didi%20Edmonds,%20a%20co-founder%20of%20Haley%20House,%20my%20son%20chatted%20up%20the%20guy%20working%20behind%20the%20counter,%20trying%20to%20talk%20his%20way%20into%20getting%20a%20piece%20of%20pastry.%20Needless%20to%20say,%20I%20was%20glad%20when%20it%20was%20time%20to%20go%20to%20the%20back%20to%20get%20ready%20for%20the%20kids.%20LOL%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELaura%20and%20Julie,%20a%20volunteer%20from%20Boston%20College,%20helped%20set%20up%20the%20cutting%20boards,%20knives,%20aprons%20and%20bowls%20for%20the%20six%20junior%20cooks%20who%20would%20take%20the%20lead%20in%20making%20the%20mee%20goreng.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20kids,%20along%20with%20Officer%20Bill%20Baxter%20and%20his%20wife,%20Gayle%20Baxter,%20came%20in%20at%20about%204pm%20and%20we%20started.%20The%20first%20fifteen%20minutes%20were%20devoted%20to%20a%20lesson%20about%20Malaysia,%20which%20was%20facilitated%20by%20a%20big%20map%20that%20Laura%20brought%20to%20show%20the%20kids.%20We%20talked%20about%20Malaysia's%20location,%20its%20rich%20culture%20and%20the%20evolution%20of%20its%20cuisine,%20which%20reflects%20the%20influences%20of%20China,%20India,%20Portugal%20and%20other%20countries.%20I%20have%20visited%20Malaysia%20twice%20and%20brought%20cookbooks,%20crafts%20and%20postcards%20to%20share%20with%20the%20kids,%20who%20were%20quite%20engaged.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20the%20lesson,%20it%20was%20time%20to%20start%20cooking.%20We%20decided%20to%20quadruple%20the%20recipe%20so%20that%20there%20would%20be%20left%20overs%20for%20the%20kids%20to%20take%20home.%20Making%20that%20change%20was%20a%20great%20opportunity%20to%20review%20fractions%20with%20the%20kids.%20Had%20to%20keep%20them%20on%20their%20toes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20gave%20everyone%20a%20task%20--%20chopping,%20mincing,%20rinsing,%20measuring,%20stirring,%20etc.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20six%20junior%20cooks%20(plus%20my%20son,%20Brooks)%20participated%20with%20interest%20and%20enthusiasm!%20They%20smelled%20Sriracha,%20oyster%20sauce,%20and%20shao%20hsing%20with%20great%20curiosity%20and%20learned%20about%20fermentation.%20I%20was%20impressed%20that%20they%20were%20determined%20to%20put%20the%20full%20amount%20of%20Sriracha%20into%20the%20dish.%20They%20wanted%20an%20authentic%20mee%20goreng!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMee%20Goreng%20(Spicy%20Fried%20Noodles),%20from%20http://rasamalaysia.com/mee-goreng-spicy-fried-noodles/%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20Chinese%20egg%20noodles,%20chili%20sauce,%20dark%20soy,%20oyster%20sauce,%20shao%20hsing%20wine%20and%20fried%20shallots%20are%20available%20at%20Asian%20markets.%20Serves%205-6%20as%20part%20of%20a%20family-style%20meal,%203-4%20as%20a%20main%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20a%20large%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20a%20boil.%20Cook%20the%20noodles%20for%2030%20seconds,%20drain,%20and%20rinse%20with%20cold%20water.%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%20bowl%20or%20measuring%20cup,%20combine%20chili%20sauce,%20dark%20soy,%20sugar,%201/4%20tsp%20salt,%20oyster%20sauce%20and%20ketchup.%20Stir%20to%20combine,%20and%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20wok%20(at%20least%2012%20inches%20in%20diameter)%20preheated%20over%20high%20heat,%20add%20the%20oil.%20Crack%20the%20eggs%20into%20the%20wok,%20stir%20vigorously%20until%20the%20eggs%20are%20lightly%20scrambled%20and%20just%20set,%20then%20add%20the%20garlic,%20noodles,%20bean%20sprouts,%20cabbage,%20shrimp,%20chicken,%20and%203/4%20cup%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir-fry%20continuously%20until%20noodles%20are%20cooked,%203-5%20minutes%20(depending%20on%20the%20heat%20of%20your%20wok),%20making%20sure%20to%20also%20cook%20the%20chicken%20and%20shrimp.%20Add%20chili%20sauce%20mixture,%20and%20keep%20stirring%20until%20well%20combined.%20The%20noodles%20should%20begin%20to%20get%20a%20bit%20drier%20(no%20liquid%20left%20in%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20wok).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20shao%20hsing%20wine%20and%20white%20pepper,%20stir%20to%20combine,%20and%20remove%20from%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGarnish%20with%20scallions%20and%20fried%20shallots.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20skipped%20the%20fried%20shallots,%20but%20that's%20ok!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETime%20to%20serve%20the%20mee%20goreng!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20enjoyed%20the%20eating%20the%20fruit%20of%20our%20labor!%20I'm%20happy%20to%20report%20that%20there%20were%20no%20left%20overs%20to%20take%20home!!!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
