  • 1 lb. ground turkey or beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small carrot, minced
  • 1/2 stalk celery, minced
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, diced
  • 1/2 tbs. olive or veggie oil
  • optional: 2 tbs. diced red bell pepper
  • 15 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 2 tbs. red wine vinegar
  • 2 tbs. brown sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp. hickory smoke
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbs. Worcestershire
  • seasoned salt and pepper to taste

Direcciones

  1. Saute the carrots and celery for 2 minutes over medium heat. Add onions, cook 2 more minutes.
  2. Add cabbage and saute until wilted.
  3. Add turkey or beef and cook until done. Drain, if needed.
  4. Add all other ingredients, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Remove cover and stir until liquids make a medium thick sauce.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.

    Perfect timing on your posting of this. I have been looking for a Sloppy Joe recipe that doesn't use powdered package ingriendents and works with turkey. I really like the use of cabbage, carrot and celery in your version. The additon of red wine vinegar adds a nice acidic touch as well. Thanks for sharing. I have added to my try soon folder.

      I added the cabbage because I had some to use up. It stretches the recipe a bit, and I really like the flavor.
