I am a mother of 3 and grandmother of 3. I started cooking with my mother, who learned from her mother, when I was old enough to stand on a step stool in the kitchen. By the time I was 12 I could put a full meal on the table for my 3 brothers and dad while my mother was away.I was taught the same way my mother was taught . By doing. I guess many would say I am a simple cook fixing simple meals.Country cooking, that is what I call what I love to cook.I was taught to cook without recipes. By sight and taste and you just know what is right. It drives people crazy when they want my recipe forsomething [ie. meat loaf or slaw dressing]. I try to tell them and they just don,t get that after 40+ years of fixing something you just know. I am afraid Grandma's recipes will die with me however becuse my kids have not picked up the desire, therefore the knack, to pass them on. It saddens me.I tried to teach them. They all can cook. My girls cook because they have to. My son thinks if a little spice or herb is good a lot will be even better. To me cooking is therapeutic. It is calming, and when I cook for others I feel I am giving them something of myself. It should be respected and savored what you do in the kitchen. Enjoy!
