Group settings?

Frank Fariello
Frank Fariello 16 de Junio de 2010

I would like a feature that allows group administrators to moderate recipes and/or customize settings for groups we start. I love the idea of groups but their usefulness is undermined by the fact that anyone can add content without limitation. The result is that a group dedicated to, say, Persian food gets recipes for Polish dishes. In the groups I have started, not just some but most of the recipes are off topic....

I agree, Frank! And I'm not a group administrator...just a group stalker.

Re: Group settings?

Right on target Frank. Also, try posting to only 1 group. There are times I get the same recipe/comment in 3-4 groups, again most are not even related to the group's focus.

Re: Group settings?

Frank, you are right on target regarding group admins having to maintain some measure of 'purity' with a specific group's focus. I think we have that option now, and I wouldn't hesitate to modify or even delete a recipe from one of my groups if it simply did not fir the profile I established. But now I think the issue is one of maintenance of the groups we establish.

This may have been, and still be a function of folks posting a recipe on their own page and then, when they process the recipe, they check off every group they have tapped into, regardless of their recipe's relevance to the focus of many or most of their selected groups. An administrator should be able to delete any recipe he/she feels is not inline with the focus of the group.

In the case, for example, of your exquisite authentic Italian recipes, while I belong to that group and will execute some of those gems, I don't see myself ever posting to it. My wife may, but probably not me. As administrator, it is your proper place to trim my sail or sink my boat, if you are so inclined.

Patrick, I cook for many gluten intolerant or lactose intolerant folks. I often modify my recipes with those diners in mind. I will then post the recipe on all the gluten-free sites, if applicable. It is a matter of relevance of recipe to group that administrators must control. I may post a single recipe to as many as three or four of the groups I have joined - but certainly not all of them.

Re: Group settings?

Amos,

Thanks for your kind words about the new group. You're right, as an admin I can delete recipes from my groups--but to be honest I often just don't have the heart... ! It would be easier if we could moderate submissions as we can moderate comments on a blog. Somehow seems less drastic than deleting a recipe that doesn't belong there. Also, less time consuming...

Having said that, with my new group, Authentic Italian Cooking, I'm putting my foot down and deleting any recipe that I feel does not fit the criteria for the group. I've given fair warning, so to speak, by clearly but nicely made this clear by saying that I would 'carefully curate' the recipes there...

Re: Group settings?

Frank, I truly believe that you may have the makings of a great compendium of classic Italian cuisine which could become a beatiful cookbook. Great job!

Re: Group settings?

Hi

Just to add that I agree that group adminstrators shouldn't feel guilty about wanting to delete, or at least moderate in some way the recipes that are added to their groups. It can get frustrating to look into your favourite groups and just see the same recipes posted - but then again, if there were two similar groups (eg I'm a member of two dessert ones) and you were only a member of one of them, you might 'miss out' on particular recipes if they were only uploaded to one of the groups, if that makes sense, which I guess is why people add their recipes to as many groups as possible.

I also wanted to ask actually, if there are any settings on CES that allow you to control the updates you get, other than the 'My News' feed? I've only just started using it recently and find it useful, but it's not something I check all the time, so I always feel like I might be missing out on some great postings!

At the moment, I just randomly check in on random groups to see what discussions are going on - so for example, it would be good if there was an option to 'subscribe' to a particular discussion or group to get email updates whenever something was posted to that group.

Cheers

Jenny x
