Onions
Love them, hate the tears! My best suggestion is to keep them cold, so I store mine in the refrigerator, and no more tears. I think if you keep them out, you can cool them down before cutting, if you have the time. That way I never have to put a piece of bread in my mouth, or remember which end to cut first...

also I've heard if you don't cut off the top where I guess the root things are that it reduces the tears also.
Thanks for the tip, Jann. I did not realize that temperature could help at all. Will give refrigeration a try!
I didn't know this. I always thought putting onions in the refrigerator will have onions smell in there.. LoL!! Thanks for the tip Jann. :)
Let's be clear here: you do not want to store onions in the refrigerator. They will create off flavors in other foods and they will go bad on you, longer term. Onions like a dry cool place of their own with a little air circulation - they will last for weeks.
You DO want to put whatever onions you plan to use in a dish into the refirgerator a couple of hours prior to use to cool them down so they are cold when you slice and dice. It does work.
Technically, you are right, Amos. You should store onions in a cool, dry place in a paper bag or cardboard box.
But, I must admit to storing mine in my refrigerator drawer, so they are handy, and they do fine for me.
And, when they are cold/cold they don't have the odors. I also cut and freeze some for convenience, too.
