Re: hard brown sugar try these tips to soften

Annie, thank you. I wish I'd had these tips a couple of years ago, when I was forever having issues with brown sugar that had gone hard.
Now I've learned a way to prevent that.
As soon as I bring the brown sugar home from the store, I place the whole bag inside a zip-lock bag, seal it, then pop it into the vegetable crisper, where it will continue to live, until it's gone. It stays nice and soft. Just make sure that the zip-lock bag stays sealed tight.
This idea came from my late mother-in-law, who, for years had been keeping her brown sugar in the crisper. The first time I saw this, I know she could see the question marks popping out of my head. She said, "Well, EVERYONE knows that", lol. I do now!

These are all excellent ideas! I had always preferred the piece of bread method until zip lock can out. I squeeze any air out the the sugar bag and twist the bag, then twist tie it THEN put it in a ziplock freezer bag. Even a pin hole in a brown sugar bag will turn it into a brick in no time. Fortunately, brown sugar has a very short life span in my kitchen. But all these ideas are great. By the way, I 86'd my perfectly good microwave years and years ago - and I do not miss it one bit.
