%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESopa%20de%20Alb%C3%B3ndiguillas%20Catalana%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDear%20readers,%20I%20have%20the%20vapors.%20I%20cannot%20believe%20that%20La%20Roja%20have%20taken%20the%20World%20Cup,%20even%20though%20they%20are%20an%20amazing%20football/soccer%20team,%20and%20as%20a%20result%20it%20should%20come%20as%20no%20surprise%20that%20I%20inundated%20poor%20Michael%20with%20lots%20of%20Spanish%20food%20over%20the%20entirety%20of%20the%20weekend.%20It%20was%20all%20I%20could%20do%20with%20the%20enormity%20of%20this%20final;%20having%20listened%20to%20the%20commentators%20on%20ESPN%20Radio%20constantly%20remind%20their%20audience%20that%20%E2%80%9Cno%20team%20has%20won%20the%20Cup%20after%20losing%20their%20opening%20game%E2%80%9D%20and%20yet%20being%20buoyed%20by%20every%20victory%20(low-scoring%20though%20they%20were),%20I%20was%20always%20a%20mixture%20of%20cautious%20optimism%20and%20paralyzing%20fear%20while%20either%20listening%20or%20watching%20a%20game.%20When%20Iniesta%20masterfully%20sent%20that%20cross%20into%20the%20net%20with%20only%20minutes%20to%20go%20in%20the%20second%20extra%20time%20period,%20both%20Michael%20and%20I%20jumped%20from%20our%20seats%20and%20cheered%E2%80%A6after%20the%20%E2%80%9C1%E2%80%B3%20came%20up%20on%20our%20television%20screens.%20While%20it%E2%80%99s%20all%20very%20bittersweet%20as%20it%20is%20over%201,400%20days%20until%20the%20next%20WC,%20I%20imagine%20my%20Spanish%20will%20improve%20immensely%20thanks%20to%20me%20now%20officially%20following%20FC%20Barcelona%20in%20La%20Liga.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%E2%80%99re%20curious,%20you%20can%20see%20some%20great%20shots%20of%20the%20final%20and%20the%20subsequent%20parade%20in%20Madrid%20here.%20Prepare%20yourself%20for%20an%20overload%20of%20the%20cuteness,%20however.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%E2%80%99s%20enough%20football/soccer%20talk%20for%20now,%20however.%20Onto%20the%20celebration%20food!Honestly,%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20why%20I%20thought%20making%20food%20to%20snack%20on%20while%20we%20watched%20the%20final%20game%20was%20a%20good%20idea%20in%20the%20first%20place.%20My%20stomach%20is%20always%20tied%20up%20in%20knots%20out%20of%20nervousness%20and%20my%20appetite%20completely%20disappears%20when%20I%20watch%20one%20of%20Spain%E2%80%99s%20games,%20and%20I%20was%20convinced%20that%20the%20gazpacho%20I%20made%20would%20ultimately%20end%20up%20all%20over%20my%20laptop%E2%80%99s%20keyboard%20the%20second%20that%20a%20goal%20was%20made,%20in%20either%20team%E2%80%99s%20favor.%20Fortunately,%20my%20computer%20remained%20tomato-and-red-pepper-free%20and%20I%20manged%20to%20keep%20the%20contents%20of%20el%20est%C3%B3mago%20down,%20but%20it%20was%20a%20tense,%20touch-and-go%20few%20hours%20during%20the%20late%20afternoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBocadillos%20de%20jam%C3%B3n%20serrano%20y%20manchego%20viejo%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20cheese%20and%20ham%20we%20enjoyed%20were%20both%20top-notch:%20the%20manchego%20was%20aged%20over%2015%20months,%20leaving%20it%20with%20a%20mellow,%20almost%20sharp-cheddar-like%20taste%20that%20was%20also%20a%20little%20nutty.%20The%20soup,%20however,%20is%20the%20real%20star:%20while%20the%20meatballs%20boast%20a%20complexity%20of%20flavors,%20the%20actual%20soup%20is%20very%20simple.%20Just%20some%20stock,%20tomatoes,%20a%20little%20tomato%20puree,%20and%20little%20noodles%20called%20fideos%20(we%20actually%20used%20fine%20egg%20noodles%20that%20you%20can%20get%20in%20the%20kosher%20section)%20and%20some%20mint%20leaves%20to%20garnish.%20Despite%20a%20long-held%20aversion%20to%20rolling%20meatballs%20(thanks%20to%20being%20corralled%20into%20rolling%20the%20tiniest%20ones%20ever%20for%20his%20mom%E2%80%99s%20holiday%20soup%20every%20year),%20Michael%20will%20still%20make%20this%20soup,%20meatballs%20be%20damned.%20If%20that%E2%80%99s%20not%20a%20reason%20to%20give%20this%20recipe%20a%20whirl,%20then%20just%20turn%20on%20the%20soundtrack%20to%20Vicky%20Cristina%20Barcelona%20and%20you%20will%20almost%20feel%20like%20you%E2%80%99re%20in%20a%20tiny%20little%20tapas%20bar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESopa%20de%20albg%C3%B3ndiguillas%20catalana%20(Catalan%20Meatball%20Soup)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eadapted%20from%20The%20Spanish%20Country%20Kitchen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eserves%204-6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20meat,%20onion,%20garlic,%20egg,%20mint,%20half%20the%20parsley,%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20bread%20crumbs,%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Use%20your%20hands%20to%20gently%20bring%20the%20mixture%20together,%20and%20then%20form%20into%201/2%20inch%20balls%20and%20place%20on%20a%20plate.%20Using%20a%20sieve,%20gently%20dust%20the%20meatballs%20with%20flour%20and%20then%20toss%20to%20coat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20oil%20in%20a%20skillet%20and%20bring%20to%20high%20heat,%20and%20then%20saute%20the%20balls%20to%20give%20them%20some%20color%20and%20firm%20them%20up;%20remove%20from%20the%20pan%20and%20place%20on%20a%20paper%20towel%20to%20drain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20soup%20itself,%20place%20the%20stock%20in%20into%20a%20large%20saucepan%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil,%20and%20add%20the%20tomato,%20noodles,%20tomatoes,%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Then%20add%20in%20the%20meatballs%20and%20bring%20the%20soup%20to%20a%20gentle%20simmer%20and%20let%20cook%20for%20about%205%20minutes.%20Stir%20in%20the%20remaining%20parsley%20and%20serve%20with%20whole%20mint%20leaves%20as%20a%20garnish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%C2%A1Buen%20provecho!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
