%20and%20the%20other%20stuff%20is%20largely%20in-effective.%20One%20night%20Todd%20went%20out%20into%20the%20garden%20and%20picked%20up%20no%20less%20than%2040%20slugs.%20We%20are%20going%20to%20have%20to%20do%20something%20about%20that%20before%20next%20year%20for%20sure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyways%20there%20was%20this%20lovely%20big%20bunch%20of%20beautiful%20rainbow%20coloured%20Bright%20Lights%20Chard%20in%20it%20and%20of%20course%20I%20just%20had%20to%20cook%20it%20tonight%20for%20our%20supper.%20It%20was%20so%20very%20pretty%20with%20it's%20deep%20emerald%20green%20leaves%20riddled%20with%20beautiful%20veins%20and%20stems%20of%20raspberry%20pink,%20blood%20red,%20orange%20and%20yellow%20.%20.%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20just%20love%20chard%20.%20.%20.%20or%20silverbeet%20as%20it%20is%20also%20called.%20It%20has%20an%20almost%20earthy%20flavour%20.%20.%20.%20and%20is%20beautiful%20to%20eat%20when%20properly%20cooked.%20You%20don't%20to%20over%20cook%20either%20the%20leaves%20or%20the%20stems%20.%20.%20.%20it%20goes%20without%20saying%20that%20the%20slimmer%20stems%20are%20a%20bit%20more%20tender%20than%20the%20thicker%20ones,%20but%20no%20less%20tasty.%20They%20just%20need%20to%20be%20cooked%20that%20little%20bit%20longer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20always%20separate%20the%20stems%20from%20the%20leaves%20and%20cook%20them%20separately,%20which%20seems%20to%20work%20very%20well%20for%20me.%20It's%20delicious%20simply%20steamed%20and%20then%20sprinkled%20with%20a%20dressing%20of%20lemon%20juice%20and%20olive%20oil,%20or%20vinegar%20as%20my%20mother%20used%20to%20use%20.%20.%20.%20but%20if%20you%20really%20want%20it%20to%20shine%20.%20.%20.%20prepare%20it%20as%20a%20gratin!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20so%20unctuously%20rich%20and%20creamy%20.%20.%20.%20with%20earthy%20undertones,%20and%20just%20a%20hint%20of%20sharpness%20from%20some%20grainy%20mustard,%20this%20is%20a%20real%20winner%20all%20round.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMe%20.%20.%20.%20I%20could%20eat%20just%20a%20plate%20of%20this%20and%20nothing%20else,%20but%20.%20.%20.%20we%20had%20it%20with%20some%20steamed%20and%20crushed%20pink%20firs%20from%20the%20garden%20and%20some%20lightly%20grilled%20Barnsley%20Chops%20(double%20lamb%20chops,%20English%20of%20course!)that%20I%20had%20simply%20sprinkled%20with%20a%20mixture%20of%20chopped%20rosemary,%20lemon%20zest%20and%20minced%20fresh%20garlic%20before%20grilling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20most%20scrummy%20supper%20indeed!%20(The%20quantities%20given%20are%20for%204%20as%20a%20side%20dish,%20but%20would%20make%20a%20very%20delicious%20light%20supper%20for%20two,%20served%20on%20it's%20own%20with%20some%20crusty%20bread%20for%20mopping%20up%20all%20those%20lucious%20juices.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*A%20Delicious%20Gratin%20of%20Chard*%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%204%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEarthy%20and%20moreishly%20delicious!%20This%20is%20quite%20simply%20the%20best.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20your%20oven%20to%20190*C/375*F/gas%20mark%205.%20Butter%20a%20shallow%20baking%20dish%20and%20set%20aside.%20Bring%20a%20pot%20of%20lightly%20salted%20water%20to%20the%20boil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWash%20your%20chard%20really%20well.%20Cut%20the%20stalks%20from%20the%20leaves.%20Cut%20the%20stalks%20into%20short%20to%20medium%20sized%20pieces.%20Plunge%20the%20stems%20into%20the%20boiling%20water%20and%20cook%20for%202%20minutes,%20then%20scoop%20out%20with%20a%20slotted%20spoon%20and%20set%20aside.%20Add%20the%20leaves%20and%20leave%20in%20the%20boiling%20water%20only%20until%20they%20are%20wilted.%20Toss%20the%20stems%20and%20leaves%20together%20(shake%20offy%20excess%20water)%20and%20then%20place%20them%20into%20the%20buttered%20dish.%20Whisk%20together%20the%20cream,%20mustard%20and%20salt%20and%20black%20pepper%20to%20taste.%20Pour%20this%20mixture%20over%20top%20of%20the%20chard.%20Sprinkle%20with%20the%20grated%20cheese.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20in%20the%20heated%20oven%20for%20about%2015%20to%2020%20minutes,%20until%20bubbling%20and%20the%20top%20has%20lightly%20browned.%20Remove%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20serve.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20in%20The%20Cottage%20today,%20a%20delicous%20Blueberry%20Gingerbread.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
