.%20In%20my%20upstate%20county,%20there's%20a%20half%20a%20dozen%20bagel%20shops%20in%20a%20mile%20radius.%20They%20come%20out%20of%20the%20oven%20fragrant%20and%20hot.%20There%20are%20so%20many%20varieties....sesame,%20onion,%20poppy,%20pumpernickel,%20and%20now%20five%20grain...all%20soft%20and%20chewy.%20Joan%20is%20detail%20oriented%20so%20out%20of%20the%20brown%20paper%20bag%20comes%20heavenly%20bagels%20plus%20cream%20cheese%20(gotta%20have%20a%20smear%20of%20cream%20cheese)%20&%20lox%20(thinly%20sliced%20salmon).%20There's%20always%20softened%20butter%20and%20a%20selection%20of%20jam.%20Me,%20I%20love%20my%20bagel%20toasted.%20Second%20on%20the%20list%20is%20Jewish%20Deli.%20The%20sandwiches%20have%20gotten%20rather%20pricey%20over%20the%20years,%20but%20the%20size%20of%20those%20sandwiches%20are%20humongous.%20Premium%20pastrami%20or%20corned%20beef%20piled%20sky%20high%20on%20soft%20rye%20bread%20with%20a%20slather%20of%20tangy%20mustard.%20Deli%20night%20wouldn't%20be%20worth%20a%20lick%20without%20creamy%20Cole%20slaw,%20pucker-up%20pickles,%20squares%20of%20potato%20knish,%20and%20of%20course...matzo%20ball%20soup.%20The%20sandwiches%20are%20eaten%20right%20off%20the%20paper%20they're%20wrapped%20in%20and%20taste%20best%20with%20root%20beer%20or%20cream%20soda.%20During%20these%20visits%20we%20eat%20our%20fair%20share%20of%20Italian%20pastries,%20NY%20cheesecake%20and%20Chinese%20cuisine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20food%20indulgence%20isn't%20contained%20to%20%22take-out%22,%20nope,%20it%20spills%20over%20to%20every%20visit%20whether%20old%20school%20chum,%20former%20neighbors%20or%20relatives%20on%20the%20long%20list%20of%20must-see.%20Cousin%20Cesira%20was%20one%20of%20them,%20this%20time%20around.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECesira%20is%20Mom's%20first%20cousin,%20but%20much%20younger.%20She%20has%20done%20well%20through%20the%20years,%20working%20hard%20and%20sacrificing%20much%20to%20obtain%20the%20good%20life.%20She%20recently%20moved%20into%20the%20home%20of%20her%20dreams.%20And%20is%20it%20exquisite...need%20I%20say%20more%20than%20that%20the%20streets%20are%20named...par.....birdie....hole-in-one.%20If%20the%20names%20conjurer%20up%20the%20image%20of%20lush%20lawns,%20manicured%20gardens%20with%20Mercedes%20and%20Jaguars%20in%20wide%20driveways...you've%20got%20it%20right.%20%20Stepping%20into%20her%20home%20was%20like%20stepping%20onto%20a%20page%20of%20House%20Beautiful...tastefully%20appointed%20with%20both%20classic%20and%20whimsical%20accessories.%20Cesira%20herself%20is%20as%20elegant%20as%20her%20home....slim,%20stylish,%20greeting%20us%20warmly%20at%20her%20front%20door...accepting%20our%20gifts%20of%20Biscotti%20Regina,%20wine%20and%20flowers%20graciously.%20With%20many%20oohs%20&%20aaahhhs,%20we%20toured%20her%20home%20and%20then%20relaxed%20in%20her%20spacious%20kitchen.%20Freshly%20brewed%20coffee%20was%20poured%20into%20gold%20rimmed%20cups%20and%20a%20feast%20for%20the%20eyes%20and%20taste%20buds%20graced%20the%20table.%20What's%20wonderful%20about%20family%20is%20no%20matter%20the%20length%20of%20time%20between%20visits...the%20threads%20of%20the%20last%20conversation%20are%20woven%20into%20the%20one%20taking%20place%20and%20a%20tapestry%20of%20new%20memories%20is%20created.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlates%20passed%20from%20hand-to-hand%20and%20even%20before%20the%20first%20bite,%20the%20questions%20began,%20%22What%20filling%20is%20in%20this?%22%20;%20%22Is%20this%20raspberry%20sauce?%22;%20%22Biscotti%20Regina%20,%20homemade?%22%20The%20answers...%20The%20filling%20was%20vanilla%20pudding%20oozing%20out%20of%20a%20pecan%20coffee%20ring....fresh%20strawberries%20drenched%20in%20a%20sweet/tart%20raspberry%20sauce%20poured%20over%20a%20moist%20pound%20cake....Biscotti%20Regina,%20better%20known%20as%20Sesame%20Cookies,%20were%20definitely%20homemade.%20%20They're%20expensive%20to%20buy%20by%20the%20pound,%20though%20more%20affordable%20and%20more%20delicious%20fresh%20out%20of%20the%20oven.%20The%20evening%20took%20on%20an%20easy%20rhythm%20as%20we%20chatted%20comfortably,%20laughed%20and%20teased,%20reminisced%20and%20munched....so%20many%20delectable%20treats,%20so%20many%20memories,%20so%20much%20love.%20%20Dio%20benedica%20la%20famiglia...God%20bless%20family.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20mixing%20bowl%20blend%20flour,%20semolina,%20baking%20powder%20&%20nutmeg.%20Set%20aside.%20In%20a%20large%20mixing%20bowl%20(I%20use%20a%20stand%20mixer)%20beat%20together%20the%20eggs%20and%20salt,%20then%20add%20extract.%20Continue%20beating%20and%20gradually%20add%20the%20sugar%20%20until%20smooth.%20Add%20the%20pieces%20of%20butter%20and%20beat%20until%20almost%20smooth.%20Pour%20dry%20ingredients%20into%20the%20wet%20mixture%20and%20beat%20on%20a%20low%20setting%20just%20until%20combined.%20If%20too%20sticky%20add%20a%201/2%20cup%20more%20of%20all%20purpose%20flour.%20Chill%20for%20at%20least%20an%20hour%20in%20plastic%20wrap.%20Can%20be%20kept%20overnight%20if%20need%20be.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees.%20Lightly%20grease%202%20cookie%20sheets.%20Pinch%20off%20a%20golf-ball%20size%20piece%20of%20dough%20and%20roll%20on%20table%20or%20counter%20to%20form%20a%20rope%20about%20a%201/2%20inch%20in%20diameter.%20With%20a%20knife,%20slice%20off%202%20inch%20lengths,%20and%20roll%20in%20sesame%20seeds.%20%20Bake%20about%2020%20minutes%20until%20golden%20brown%20(don't%20over-brown).%20Cool%20before%20serving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etip:%20Keep%20unused%20dough%20in%20refrigerator%20as%20you%20form%20cookies.%20%20Makes%20about%205%20dozen%20cookies%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
