It looks like Mother Nature has finally stopped playing "spin the bottle" on what season it is. It's finally raining! Of course, we Californians don't have a true Four Seasons. Yes, we're spoiled. We also pay hefty taxes, so I guess we're even.

,%20cooked%20chopped%20onion,%20some%20tomato%20paste,%20and%20thyme%20(dried%20or%20fresh)%20until%20the%20onions%20are%20softened%20and%20slightly%20browned.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20takes%20about%208-10%20minutes.%20In%20the%20meantime...I%20lined%20my%20removable%20slow%20cooker%20insert%20with%20a%20plastic%20liner%20(easily%20found%20at%20your%20local%20grocery%20store).%20These%20make%20cleanup%20super%20easy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20build%20more%20flavor,%20we%20add%20dry%20red%20wine,%20then%20add%20the%20cooked%20onions%20to%20the%20slow%20cooker.%20%20Next,%20we%20add%20in%20crushed%20tomatoes,%20beef%20and%20chicken%20broth,%20chopped%20carrots...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...soy%20sauce%20(I%20use%20Tamari%20sauce),%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...barley%20and%20then%20the%20cut%20up%20meat,%20that%20has%20been%20seasoned%20with%20salt%20&%20pepper.%20At%20this%20point,%20I%20covered%20the%20slow%20cooker%20insert,%20put%20it%20into%20the%20fridge%20and%20went%20to%20bed.%20%20Obviously,%20if%20you%20are%20a%20homemaker,%20you%20can%20do%20all%20of%20this%20earlier%20on%20the%20same%20day%20you%20want%20the%20soup.%20%20%20Early%20in%20the%20morning,%20I%20turned%20on%20the%20slow%20cooker%20to%20the%20low%20setting%20and%20came%20home%2011%20hours%20later.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20when%20I%20don't%20gripe%20about%20having%20to%20prep%20my%20slow%20cooker%20meal,%20the%20night%20before.%20%20It's%20a%20nice%20feeling%20to%20come%20home%20to%20smelling%20your%20dinner%20cooking%20away.%20%20ATK%20says%20to%20remove%20the%20meat,%20and%20then%20shred%20it%20into%20bite-sized%20pieces.%20I%20skipped%20that%20step,%20by%20cutting%20my%20pieces%20into%20bite-sized%20chunks%20in%20the%20first%20place.%20%20Simple%20details.%20%20I%20didn't%20have%20much%20fat%20to%20skim%20off%20the%20top,%20either.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20added%20some%20fresh%20chopped%20parsley,%20made%20a%20quick%20green%20salad%20and%20sliced%20some%20fresh%20French%20Bread.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20finishing%20touch,%20we%20had%20a%20roaring%20fire%20going%20and%20listened%20to%20much%20needed%20rainfall%20outside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETASTING%20NOTES:%20%20%20This%20soup%20has%20a%20very%20rich%20red%20color%20to%20it,%20because%20of%20the%20crushed%20tomatoes%20and%20red%20wine.%20%20The%20beef%20is%20super%20tender.%20%20I%20felt%20a%20little%20disappointed%20in%20that%20I%20didn't%20go%20with%20my%20gut%20instinct%20to%20increase%20the%20amount%20of%20barley%20from%201/4%20cup%20to%20at%20least%201/2%20cup.%20%20I%20really%20appreciate%20a%20higher%20barley%20to%20beef%20ratio,%20and%20I%20could%20barely%20detect%20in%20the%20soup.%20%20As%20for%20the%20flavor,%20I%20liked%20it.%20%20I'm%20a%20lover%20of%20all%20things%20flavored%20tomato,%20but%20I%20felt%20that%20the%20crushed%20tomato%20overpowered%20the%20flavor%20of%20the%20beef.%20%20However,%20my%20son%20disagreed%20with%20me.%20He%20loved%20this%20soup.%20%20That%20is%20not%20to%20say%20that%20this%20isn't%20a%20good%20recipe.%20It%20is.%20%20I%20would%20say%20that%20you%20need%20to%20adjust%20the%20recipe%20to%20have%20less%20tomato,%20if%20that's%20your%20preference.%20%20I%20would%20definitely%20double%20up%20on%20the%20pearl%20barley,%20if%20not%20more.%20Other%20than%20that,%20this%20is%20a%20lovely%20soup%20and%20I%20would%20make%20it%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20glad%20that%20I%20have%20re-bonded%20with%20my%20slow%20cooker.%20%20Sure,%20I%20spend%20a%20half%20hour%20prepping%20dinner%20the%20night%20before.%20But,%20it%20is%20gives%20me%20the%20next%20night%20off%20from%20having%20to%20prep,%20cook%20and%20clean%20pots%20and%20pans.%20%20I've%20bookmarked%20a%20few%20more%20recipes%20from%20this%20cookbook%20that%20I%20hope%20will%20be%20as%20good%20as%20the%20last%20three%20I've%20posted%20and%20shared%20with%20you.%20Let's%20see%20who%20won%20my%20giveaway%20to%20receive%20a%20copy%20of%20America's%20Test%20Kitchen%20Slow%20Cooker%20Revolution.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20think%20I'll%20tune%20in%20to%20our%20local%20news%20to%20see%20how%20Tiger%20Woods%20and%20all%20the%20other%20professional%20golfers%20are%20doing%20with%20this%20weekend's%20golf%20tournament.%20%20%20Did%20I%20also%20mention%20that%20I%20haven't%20swung%20a%20golf%20club%20in%20about%20four%20%20years?%20%20At%20least%20I%20scored%20well%20with%20my%20Valentine--%20my%20wonderful%20husband.%20%20I%20figure%20that%20once%20we%20both%20retire,%20we'll%20have%20plenty%20of%20time%20to%20hit%20the%20putting%20greens.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
