Beer Battered Catfish with Coleslaw

July 9th, 2014 Manny

Another great recipe for catfish. Catfish are not always available in supermarkets but can be found most of the time in wet market. Usually it is sold live and you have to ask the vendor to clean it. But if you can’t find catfish, cream dory is a good substitute because Pangasius fish, where cream dory fish fillet came from is a relative of catfish.

Ingredients:

1/2 kilo catfish fillet (or any other fish fillet, preferably cream dory), sliced into serving portions

1 cup all-purpose flour, divided

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

2/3 cup beer

vegetable oil, for frying

2 cups coleslaw (see recipe below)

lemon wedges for garnishing

How to cook Beer Battered Catfish with Coleslaw:

To make the batter, combine 1/3 cup flour, salt and peppercorn in a bowl.

Slowly add beer while mixing well. Set aside.

Add 1/2 – inch deep cooking oil in a heavy skillet. Heat oil for deep frying.

Place remaining flour on a plate and dredge catfish on at a time.

Dip fish slices batter, and fry in the preheated skillet with oil, about 4 minutes per side or until golden and crisp.

Drain fish on paper towels. Serve with coleslaw and lemon wedges.

To make coleslaw:

In a bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
