%20and%20I%20came%20across%20this:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22He%20showed%20the%20words%20%22chocolate%20cake%22%20to%20a%20group%20of%20Americans%20and%20recorded%20their%20word%20associations.%20%20%22Guilt%22%20was%20the%20top%20response.%20%20If%20that%20strikes%20you%20as%20unexceptional,%20consider%20the%20response%20of%20the%20French%20eaters%20to%20the%20same%20prompt:%20%22celebration%22.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20is%20from%20a%20study%20which%20was%20recorded%20in%20Michael%20Pollan's%20book%20In%20Defense%20of%20Food,%20a%20book%20that%20if%20I%20wasn't%20so%20broke%20or%20actually%20had%20time%20to%20read%20anything%20unrelated%20to%20uni%20that%20I%20would%20be%20jumping%20up%20and%20down%20to%20read.%20Okay,%20that%20might%20be%20a%20slight%20exaggeration,%20but%20it%20does%20sound%20like%20an%20interesting%20book.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20fascinating%20to%20see%20that%20something%20as%20simple%20as%20chocolate%20cake%20can%20get%20such%20opposite%20reactions%20from%20different%20cultures.%20If%20you%20were%20asked%20to%20say%20the%20first%20thing%20that%20came%20to%20mind%20to%20%22chocolate%20cake%22,%20what%20would%20you%20say?%20%20What%20popped%20into%20my%20head%20was%20%22yes,%20please%22.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEspecially%20for%20this%20particular%20chocolate%20cake.%20The%20batter%20for%20this%20is%20like%20chocolate%20milkshake.%20With,%20you%20know,%20vodka%20and%20kahlua%20thrown%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'm%20gonna%20be%20honest:%20I've%20never%20tried%20or%20heard%20of%20a%20Black%20Russian%20before%20this.%20According%20to%20Wikipedia%20it's%20a%20cocktail%20of%20simply%20vodka%20and%20coffee%20liqueur.%20I%20have%20a%20feeling%20I%20won't%20like%20it%20as%20much%20as%20this%20cake,%20because%20this%20has%20chocolate%20in%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20seriously%20moist%20cake,%20the%20kind%20of%20chocolate%20cake%20that%20gives%20a%20gooey%20squelch%20when%20you%20slice%20a%20knife%20through%20it,%20and%20leaves%20sticky%20dark%20crumbs%20all%20over%20your%20fingers.%20%20In%20other%20words,%20the%20best%20kind%20of%20chocolate%20cake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20most%20liqueur-soaked%20cakes,%20it%20gets%20better%20as%20it%20ages.%20It's%20recommended%20that%20you%20soak%20the%20soak%20overnight.%20%20If%20you're%20worried%20about%20the%20alcohol%20taste%20it%20doesn't%20actually%20taste%20very%20strongly%20of%20kahlua%20at%20all,%20you%20can%20taste%20that%20there's%20liqueur%20but%20not%20very%20much;%20the%20kahlua%20acts%20similarly%20to%20what%20espresso%20powder%20does%20in%20a%20chocolate%20cake%20and%20enhances%20the%20flavor%20of%20the%20chocolate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20time%20for%20another%20blog%20hop!%20%20I%20missed%20the%20last%20two%20hops%20but%20this%20month's%20theme%20was%20too%20good%20to%20miss.%20%20This%20month's%20SABH%20was%20hosted%20by%20JJ%20of%2084th&3rd,%20check%20out%20the%20hop%20list%20at%20the%20end%20of%20this%20post%20to%20see%20other%20boozy%20confections!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20your%20oven%20to%20160C/325F.%20%20Grease%20a%20bundt%20pan%20and%20dust%20with%20cocoa%20powder.%20%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20bowl,%20sift%20together%20the%20dry%20ingredients%20(flour,%20cornstarch,%20milk%20powder,%20cocoa%20powder,%20baking%20powder,%20salt%20and%20sugar).%20%20Add%20butter,%20oil,%20milk%20and%20vanilla%20and%20beat%20with%20an%20electric%20mixer%20until%20there%20are%20no%20dry%20ingredients%20visible.%20%20Add%20eggs%20and%20beat%20until%20mixture%20is%20smooth.%20%20Mix%20in%20vodka%20and%20Kahlua%20until%20well%20combined;%20don't%20over-mix.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20mixture%20into%20your%20bundt%20pan%20and%20bake%20for%2040-45%20minutes,%20or%20until%20a%20skewer%20inserted%20comes%20out%20clean.%20%20Let%20cool%20in%20pan%20for%2015%20minutes,%20then%20invert%20and%20finish%20cooling%20on%20a%20wire%20rack.%20%20Meanwhile,%20wash%20out%20your%20bundt%20pan%20and%20dry%20it%20to%20use%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20the%20cake%20has%20sufficiently%20cooled,%20make%20the%20syrup:%20combine%20all%20ingredients%20except%20the%20Kahlua%20in%20a%20saucepan%20with%20tall%20sides%20over%20medium%20heat%20and%20stir%20until%20the%20butter%20has%20melted%20and%20sugar%20has%20dissolved.%20%20Keep%20heating%20it%20until%20it%20comes%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20the%20liquid%20has%20reduced%20slightly.%20%20Remove%20from%20heat%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20Kahlua.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInvert%20the%20cooled%20cake%20back%20into%20the%20bundt%20pan.%20%20With%20a%20toothpick%20or%20a%20fork,%20poke%20holes%20all%20over%20the%20surface%20of%20the%20cake.%20%20Pour%20the%20hot%20syrup%20over%20the%20cake,%20making%20sure%20you%20cover%20the%20entire%20surface.%20%20The%20syrup%20might%20pool%20at%20the%20edges%20at%20first,%20that's%20okay.%20Let%20it%20soak%20for%20at%20least%204%20hours%20(preferably%20overnight).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20soaking,%20invert%20the%20cake%20back%20onto%20a%20serving%20platter.%20%20If%20you%20haven't%20just%20happened%20to%20run%20out%20of%20powdered%20sugar%20like%20I%20did,%20then%20sift%20some%20on%20top%20for%20a%20prettier%20look.%20%20Serve.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
