Epic Roasthouse on San Francisco’s waterfront is the kind of place you go to impress.
There’s the unparalleled view of the Bay from most any table, including the jaw-dropping LED “Bay Lights” flickering installation on the Bay Bridge.

%20for%20$198.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20view%20outside%20the%20windows.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dramatic%20dining%20room%20ceiling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPart%20of%20the%20pump%20house-like%20decor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELast%20fall,%20Park%20Ulrich,%20also%20executive%20chef%20of%20adjacent%20restaurant%20Waterbar,%20took%20over%20the%20same%20position%20at%20Epic%20Roasthouse%20when%20founding%20chef,%20Jan%20Birnbaum,%20departed.%20I%20had%20a%20chance%20to%20dine%20at%20Epic%20Roasthouse%20recently%20as%20a%20guest%20of%20the%20restaurant,%20though,%20it%20was%20a%20night%20when%20Ulrich%20was%20not%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20%E2%80%9CBee%20Flight.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20wonderful%20way%20to%20begin%20the%20night%20is%20with%20the%20unique%20%E2%80%9CBee%20Flight%E2%80%9D%20($12)%20of%20three%20sparkling%20meads%20by%20Heidrun%20Meadery%20of%20Point%20Reyes%20Station,%20the%20only%20maker%20in%20the%20United%20States%20of%20honey%20wine%20made%20in%20the%20traditional%20French%20methode%20Champenoise.%20There%20is%20Hawaiian%20Macadamia%20Nut,%20California%20Orange%20Blossom%20and%20California%20Avocado%20Blossom.%20They%20are%20all%20brut%20dry%20but%20with%20the%20unmistakable%20taste%20of%20honey%20in%20them,%20along%20with%20nice%20minerality.%20The%20macadamia%20one%20actually%20tastes%20nutty,%20the%20orange%20blossom%20one%20has%20a%20bright%20citrus%20note%20and%20the%20avocado%20one%20has%20a%20distinct%20grassiness.%20If%20you%E2%80%99ve%20never%20tried%20mead%20before,%20do%20indulge%20in%20this%20flight%20of%20fancy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKale%20salads%20seem%20to%20be%20everywhere%20now,%20so%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20surprising%20to%20find%20one%20here,%20tossed%20with%20tangerines,%20pine%20nuts%20and%20ricotta%20($12).%20The%20combination%20of%20ingredients%20worked%20well%20together,%20but%20the%20leaves%20were%20a%20little%20overdressed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKale%20salad%20with%20pine%20nuts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESomen%20with%20uni.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBone%20marrow%20crowned%20with%20crab%20gratin.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESomen%20noodle%20salad%20gets%20dressed%20up%20with%20sea%20urchin,%20daikon%20and%20red%20shiso.%20If%20you%E2%80%99re%20used%20to%20big%20bowls%20of%20somen%20at%20your%20local%20Japanese%20noodle%20joint,%20you%E2%80%99ll%20find%20the%20portion%20here%20much%20daintier,%20even%20at%20$18.%20The%20noodles%20are%20tossed%20in%20a%20creamy,%20sweet,%20citrusy%20sauce%20that%20reminded%20me%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20Thousand%20Island%20if%20it%20were%20made%20with%20sweet%20Japanese%20Kewpie%20mayo.%20The%20uni%20was%20not%20garnishing%20the%20noodles,%20but%20part%20of%20the%20sauce,%20which%20made%20its%20presence%20difficult%20to%20discern.%20That%20was%20a%20little%20disappointing%20because%20if%20you%E2%80%99re%20in%20the%20mood%20for%20uni,%20you%20definitely%20want%20to%20taste%20its%20sweet,%20creamy%20briny%20flavor%20full-on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20bone%20marrow%20and%20Dungeness%20crab%20gratin%20($18)%20with%20a%20white%20truffle%20glaze%20had%20a%20similar%20issue.%20A%20riff%20on%20surf%20and%20turf,%20the%20large%20bone%20had%20been%20split%20open,%20with%20its%20marrow%20sitting%20underneath%20very%20rich%20crab%20gratin.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20decadent%20dish%20to%20be%20sure.%20But%20the%20marrow%20itself%20gets%20a%20little%20lost%20underneath%20the%20creamy,%20cheesy%20crab.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDry-aged%20ribeye.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFries%20too%20good%20to%20pass%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20husband%20can%20never%20pass%20up%20a%20good%20ribeye.%20Here,%20it%E2%80%99s%20dry-aged%20($56)%20and%20comes%20in%20a%20manly%2012-ounce%20portion.%20It%20arrived%20perfectly%20medium-rare,%20as%20requested.%20You%20can%20choose%20from%20one%20of%20four%20sauces%20to%20accompany%20it.%20But%20the%20meat%20is%20so%20buttery%20and%20unctuous,%20you%20almost%20don%E2%80%99t%20need%20anything%20else.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20except%20maybe%20a%20side%20of%20French%20fries%20($7)%20that%20are%20super%20crisp%20on%20the%20outside%20and%20custardy%20within.%20Bernaise%20sauce%20comes%20on%20the%20side%20to%20dip%20into.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20wood-roasted%20Hawaiian%20Ono%20($34)%20was%20meaty%20and%20moist.%20Just%20like%20at%20Waterbar,%20Epic%20Roasthouse%20lists%20on%20the%20menu%20where%20the%20fish%20came%20from%20and%20how%20it%20was%20caught.%20In%20this%20case,%20it%20was%20by%20long-line%20off%20the%20Hawaiian%20islands.%20Baby%20artichokes%20and%20leeks%20added%20a%20wintery%20touch,%20along%20with%20the%20subtle%20sweetness%20of%20blood%20orange.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBananas,%20cinnamon%20and%20rum%20make%20this%20cheesecake%20special.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20dessert,%20we%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20resist%20sharing%20the%20most%20excellent,%20fluffy%20Bananas%20Foster%20cheesecake%20($10)%20that%20was%20garnished%20with%20bruleed%20slices%20of%20banana,%20a%20cinnamony-rum%20sauce%20and%20candied%20walnuts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDinner%20might%20not%20have%20been%20100%20percent%20epic,%20but%20if%20you%20choose%20wisely,%20it%20definitely%20can%20be%20quite%20im
