Cherry Wink Classic Cookies won the Grand Prize in the Pillsbury 2nd Bake-off in the 1950s - you can recreate this treat with regular or gluten-free flours today
Dates, pecans, maraschino cherries blended into a vanilla-scented batter will bring back the best of days gone by...
Chop some dates...
...get some good pecans...
...and chop them up...
...add a little pure vanilla extract to a splash of milk...
...measure out some corn flakes (or a G-F substitute)...
...crush those flakes for a cookie coating later.
The flour, salt, baking soda and powder are sifted together
I LOVE CHERRIES! And this recipe calls for plenty of 'em!
Chop enough cherries to get 1/3 cup, and quarter 12 nice cherries to top the cookies
Combine the shortening, sugar and eggs...
...add the vanilla and milk and combine
Pour the liquid mixture into the flour mixture...
...and combine well...
...add the chopped cherries, dates & pecans
After rolling every spoonful of the now-complete cookie dough in the crushed cornflakes, bake on a greased sheet for about 15 minutes, then rack 'em to cool
