Receta Chloe 81: A Superlative “Speakeasy” On The Lower East Side Brings You Back In Time!

I’m not sure if it’s because of the success of Boardwalk Empire (set in the Prohibition Era) or just because hipsters need a new retro movement to follow, but bars and restaurants with a 1920’s speakeasy look have taken over the artier neighborhoods of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Chloe 81 is one of these places—it features a lot of pale yellow subway tile and dim lighting, and actually has a semi-secret club room downstairs that features a bar, dancing and a DJ. I went to Chloe 81 for an early dinner because a crowded 11 PM scene with beautiful people is just not my thing at the advanced age of 53, LOL!

%20or%20just%20because%20hipsters%20need%20a%20new%20retro%20movement%20to%20follow,%20but%20bars%20and%20restaurants%20with%20a%201920%E2%80%99s%20speakeasy%20look%20have%20taken%20over%20the%20artier%20neighborhoods%20of%20Manhattan%20and%20Brooklyn.%20Chloe%2081%20is%20one%20of%20these%20places%E2%80%94it%20features%20a%20lot%20of%20pale%20yellow%20subway%20tile%20and%20dim%20lighting,%20and%20actually%20has%20a%20semi-secret%20club%20room%20downstairs%20that%20features%20a%20bar,%20dancing%20and%20a%20DJ.%20I%20went%20to%20Chloe%2081%20for%20an%20early%20dinner%20because%20a%20crowded%2011%20PM%20scene%20with%20beautiful%20people%20is%20just%20not%20my%20thing%20at%20the%20advanced%20age%20of%2053,%20LOL!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInteriorThey%20make%20great%20specialty%20drinks%20and%20all%20their%20mixes/syrups%20are%20made%20from%20scratch%20at%20the%20bar.%20Definitely%20start%20your%20dinner%20off%20with%20one%20of%20the%20ten%20specialties%20of%20the%20house%20being%20offered%20that%20night%20(all%20are%20priced%20at%20$14).%20I%20tasted%20their%20most%20popular%20drink%20The%20Chloe,%20which%20is%20a%20delicious%20combo%20of%20champagne%20and%20elderflower%20liqueur%20and%20the%20Mezcal%20Mule,%20a%20smoky-tasting%20blend%20of%20Mezcal,%20lime%20juice%20and%20house-made%20ginger.%20I%20swear%20that%20the%20latter%20not%20only%20tasted%20divine,%20but%20it%20cured%20my%20impending%20cold%20symptoms.%20Drinks%20are%20served%20in%20simple%20glasses%20that%20look%20like%20they%20were%20manufactured%20in%20the%20Speakeasy%20Age.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInterior%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20food%20prices%20are%20very%20reasonable%20compared%20to%20the%20price%20of%20the%20drinks,%20and%20the%20fare%20is%20classically%20American%20with%20large%20seafood%20plates%20five%20types%20of%20oysters%20(including%20ones%20from%20Nootka%20Sound,%20North%20Bay%20and%20Hood%20Canal)%20at%20$2%20to%20$2.50%20a%20pop.%20The%20Chloe%20Platter%20includes%20four%20jumbo%20shrimp,%20six%20oysters,%20six%20clams%20and%20several%20King%20Crab%20Legs%20for%20$55,%20making%20it%20the%20most%20ordering%20item%20for%20the%20health-conscious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELinguini%20Bolognese%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20broiled%20NY%20strip%20served%20with%20delicious%20golden%20fries%20will%20only%20set%20you%20back%20$21%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20big%2012%20to%2014%20ounce%20serving%20of%20meat.%20I%20wanted%20to%20do%20some%20pasta%20with%20my%20meat,%20so%20I%20ordered%20the%20Linguini%20Bolognese%20($16);%20it%20was%20a%20rather%20mild%20version%20and%20the%20portion%20was%20quite%20big%20(about%20four%20to%20five%20ounces%20of%20dry%20pasta%20was%20used%20to%20make%20it).%20I%20loved%20the%20massively%20stretchy,%20gooey%20Parmesan%20cheese%20that%20it%20was%20topped%20with;%20it%20almost%20seemed%20like%20mozzarella.%20Let%20me%20backtrack%20for%20a%20minute%20and%20say%20that%20after%20my%20cocktails,%20I%20headed%20straight%20for%20the%20Roasted%20Beet%20Salad%20($9)%20served%20with%20walnuts,%20goat%20cheese%20and%20balsamic%20vinaigrette.%20The%20beets%20were%20fresh%20and%20tender%20and%20the%20goat%20cheese%20was%20mild.%20I%20loved%20this%20salad%20and%20would%20definitely%20order%20it%20if%20I%20ever%20return%20to%20Chloe%2081.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBerry%20Financier%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20generally%20only%20three%20desserts%20offered%20at%20Chloe%2081%20at%20one%20time%20and%20they%20are%20all%20priced%20at%20a%20very%20reasonable%20$6.%20My%20dining%20partner%20Gail%20and%20I%20shared%20both%20the%20Berry%20Financier%20(a%20small%20round%20yellow%20cake%20with%20the%20same%20texture%20as%20a%20Madeleine,%20laying%20in%20a%20strawberry%20sauce)%20and%20the%20Tarte%20Tartin,%20which%20is%20actually%20a%20mini%20apple%20upside%20down%20cake%20(laying%20in%20a%20caramel%20sauce).%20Both%20were%20served%20with%20a%20scoop%20of%20divine%20vanilla%20gelato%20from%20the%20nearby%20Il%20Laboratorio%20Del%20Gelato.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20great%20that%20you%20can%20get%20this%20type%20of%20hearty%20American%20fare%20(with%20French-style%20desserts%20including%20Chocolate%20Mousse)%20very%20late%20at%20night%E2%80%94I%20think%20it%20would%20be%20romantic%20to%20come%20for%20Chloe%20cocktails,%20a%20seafood%20tray%20and%20desserts%20late%20at%20night%20with%20someone%20special%20or%20just%20a%20bunch%20of%20BFF%E2%80%99s!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChloe%2081%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E81%20Ludlow%20Street%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010002%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(212)%20677-0067%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.chloe81.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20American%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
