Receta Cranberry Bread; morning coffee
This year, for the first time, I didn’t have to search or make a special trip to a fancy store to find cranberries.
They started appearing in early November, weeks before I was ready for them. Even my local supermarket has had them for the last few weeks.
I can only hope that they have them for one more week so I can make cranberry sauce for Christmas dinner.
This has been a family holiday tradition forever
And it may be on its way to becoming a tradition for a few French and Romanian families.
I’ve taken it to both of my French classes…. The first time because they were curious about what one actually made with cranberries and the second time because they loved it so much they requested more. Then I had to translate the recipe into French for them.
I’m so proud……
Cranberry Bread
Total time: 80 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 tbs shortening (I use butter), rounded
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup orange juice
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup cranberries, cut in half
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped
Instructions:
Pre-heat oven to 350F (180C)
Butter and flour a 9 X 5 loaf pan (I line the bottom with parchment – comes out easier)
Cream sugar, shortening and egg together.
Stir in juice.
Add flour, soda, baking powder, salt and stir well.
Add vanilla, cranberries and nuts and stir to combine.
Bake for 60 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Our coffee machine quit working.
It’s a Senseo and it uses ‘dosettes’ or pads / pods rather than the little plastic capsules that Nespresso or Tassimo, etc. use.
Anyway, it quit working.
I went to my local store to buy a new one. They only had it in ugly colors – puce, mustard, lilac….
Well, the lilac was actually a pretty color, but not for a coffee machine and not in my kitchen.
I just wanted a nice, sleek black one.
I ordered it from Amazon France.
It was supposed to be delivered early this week.
Yesterday the yellow post truck pulled up to the gate and honked.
Yay! Coffee for breakfast again!
I ran out just as he was pulling a small box out of the back.
A small box…..
I thought:
Holy Crap!!!!
What’s in a small box? What could I have ordered? Now I’m going to have to send it back and ask for a refund and, and, and…..
It wasn’t my new coffee machine….. or anything else resembling a coffee machine.
It was a box of Christmas cookies from ma belle soeur in the US (they are / were delicious, I might add).
Today the yellow post truck pulled up to the gate and honked again.
I ran out again.
This time he was pulling a HUGE box out of the back.
Again I thought: Holy Crap!!!! What on earth is in that giant box? What dd I do now!!!!!
This time it was the coffee machine.
The giant box was divided neatly in half. On one side was my coffee machine and on the other side was packing material.
The packing material was not wrapped around the coffee machine, but next to it, taking up equal space.
I hope they don’t charge me for that….. I’m pretty sure I didn’t order it.
We have coffee again.
Life is back to normal and all is right in my kitchen.
