%20to%20this%20season's%20CSA%20share%20I%20also%20made%20a%20promise%20to%20myself%20that%20this%20family%20would%20(to%20the%20best%20of%20our%20ability)%20eat%20everything%20that%20the%20harvest%20provided%20us.%20My%20family%20was%20not%20as%20committed%20as%20I%20but%20since%20I%20do%20the%20cooking%20around%20these%20parts%20they%20bought%20into%20the%20promise,%20albeit%20reluctantly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20that%20means%20everything.%20Last%20night's%20dinner%20was%20not%20a%20stretch%20for%20the%20less%20culinary%20adventurous%20in%20my%20house.%20A%20great%20big%20salad%20of%20four%20lettuces,%20radishes%20and%20herbs%20with%20their%20choice%20of%20dressings%20and%20a%20roasted%20turkey%20breast.%20Sound%20good?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAccompanying%20this%20simple%20meal%20was%20the%20stretch%20course.%20Rhubarb%20Bread.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHaving%20been%20born%20and%20raised%20in%20Pennsylvania,%20I%20am%20familiar%20with%20this%20red,%20tart%20stalk.%20It%20grew%20wild%20in%20many%20a%20garden%20of%20my%20youth%20and%20if%20a%20neighbor%20wasn't%20handing%20your%20mom%20a%20supply%20over%20the%20fence,%20the%20Egg%20Man%20always%20had%20some%20on%20his%20weekly%20delivery.%20(Yes,%20we%20had%20an%20egg%20man%20who%20made%20weekly%20deliveries.%20And%20a%20bread%20man%20and%20a%20milk%20man%20-%20each%20one%20would%20yell%20through%20the%20screen%20door%20their%20particular%20specialty,%20%22EEEeeggs%22%20one%20would%20sing,%20%22Breeeeaaaad%22%20another%20would%20call%20out.%20The%20milk%20man%20came%20at%20some%20ungodly%20hour%20of%202:00%20or%203:00%20am%20and%20just%20left%20the%20milk%20in%20a%20metal,%20insulated%20box%20that%20everyone%20kept%20on%20their%20front%20porch).%20Anyway....%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERhubarb%20is%20botanically%20classified%20as%20a%20vegetable;%20however,%20in%20the%20United%20States%20a%20New%20York%20court%20decided%20in%201947%20that%20since%20it%20was%20used%20in%20the%20United%20States%20as%20a%20fruit%20it%20was%20to%20be%20called%20a%20fruit.*%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20children,%20being%20the%20concrete%20raised%20kids%20that%20they%20are,%20have%20never%20heard%20of%20this%20vegetable%20/%20fruit%20and%20if%20truth%20be%20told%20part%20of%20their%20rhubarb%20ignorance%20is%20because%20I've%20never%20been%20a%20fan%20of%20the%20stewed%20rhubarb%20or%20strawberry%20rhubarb%20pies%20of%20my%20childhood.%20But%20a%20promise%20is%20a%20promise%20even%20if%20it%20is%20only%20to%20oneself%20and%20this%20is%20what%20I%20came%20up%20with%20for%20my%20rhubarb%20share:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERhubarb%20Bread%20(with%20your%20choice%20of%20two%20toppings)%20Makes%202%20regular%20size%20or%20one%20very%20large%20loaf%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETopping%20%231:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20brown%20sugar%20and%20the%20oil%20in%20a%20large%20bowl%20and%20beat%20well%20(using%20an%20electric%20mixer).%20Mix%20together%20the%20buttermilk,%20egg%20and%20vanilla%20and%20add%20to%20the%20brown%20sugar%20mixture.%20Beat%20until%20combined.%20Combine%20the%20flour,%20baking%20soda%20and%20salt%20and%20stir%20into%20the%20wet%20ingredients%20until%20just%20combined.%20Stir%20in%20the%20rhubarb%20and%20the%20nuts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20batter%20into%20the%20pans.%20Smooth%20top%20and%20sprinkle%20your%20choice%20of%20topping%20over%20batter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20for%201%20hour%20(2%20loaves)%20or%201%20hour%2015%20minutes%20for%20large%20pan%20or%20until%20tester%20inserted%20in%20middle%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Cool%20in%20pan%2010%20minutes,%20then%20turn%20out%20on%20a%20plate.%20Serve%20warm%20as%20a%20sweet%20and%20savory%20bread%20with%20dinner%20or%20with%20loosely%20whipped%20cream%20for%20dessert.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20Cook's%20Notes:%20I%20love%20crystallized%20ginger%20with%20this%20bread.%20The%20rhubarb%20melts%20into%20the%20bread%20and%20every%20now%20and%20then%20you%20get%20a%20bite%20of%20%22tang%22%20with%20the%20heartiness%20of%20the%20nuts,%20the%20sweet%20chewy%20heat%20of%20the%20ginger%20and%20the%20deep%20flavor%20of%20brown%20sugar.%20And%20the%20best%20part?%20My%20picky%20eaters%20never%20questioned%20the%20ingredients.%20They%20just%20ate%20it%20up.%20A%20lot%20of%20it.%20The%20orange%20zest%20topping%20is%20delightful%20too%20-%20adding%20an%20interesting%20citrus%20note%20to%20the%20bread.%20I%20would%20recommend%20using%20pecans%20if%20you%20are%20using%20the%20orange%20zest.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20bread%20is%20also%20delicious%20omitting%20the%20rhubarb%20completely;%20in%20case%20you%20don't%20have%20an%20egg%20man%20or%20neighbor%20handing%20you%20a%20supply%20over%20the%20fence.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20this%20morning?%20There%20was%20none%20left%20for%20breakfast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*Wikipedia:%20Rhubarb%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
