%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20December%202009%20Daring%20Bakers%E2%80%99%20challenge%20was%20brought%20to%20you%20by%20Anna%20of%20Very%20Small%20Anna%20and%20Y%20of%20Lemonpi.%20They%20chose%20to%20challenge%20Daring%20Bakers%E2%80%99%20everywhere%20to%20bake%20and%20assemble%20a%20gingerbread%20house%20from%20scratch.%20They%20chose%20recipes%20from%20Good%20Housekeeping%20and%20from%20The%20Great%20Scandinavian%20Baking%20Book%20as%20the%20challenge%20recipes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20rules%20for%20this%20DB%20challenge%20stated:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Everything%20needs%20to%20be%20edible%20-%20no%20glue%20or%20inner%20non-food%20supports%20allowed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20You%20must%20bake%20the%20gingerbread%20yourself,%20whichever%20recipe%20you%20choose.%20No%20graham%20cracker%20houses%20please!%20%203.%20You%20must%20use%20some%20sort%20of%20template.%20If%20you%20don't%20use%20ours,%20take%20a%20picture%20or%20link%20to%20what%20you%20do%20use%20in%20your%20final%20post.%20It%20doesn't%20have%20to%20be%20super%20technical%20-%20Anna%20didn't%20even%20measure%20hers,%20she%20just%20cut%20out%20shapes%20from%20parchment%20and%20made%20sure%20the%20edges%20matched%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Your%20house%20must%20be%20able%20to%20stand%20on%20its%20own.%20If%20you%20want%20to%20go%20adding%20balconies%20with%20candy%20stick%20buttresses%20or%20whatever%20go%20right%20ahead,%20but%20the%20main%20house%20itself%20must%20be%20free-standing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGingerbread%20Creation%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%20(Dough):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20In%20very%20large%20bowl,%20with%20wire%20whisk%20(or%20with%20an%20electric%20mixer),%20beat%20brown%20sugar,%20cream,%20and%20molasses%20until%20sugar%20lumps%20dissolve%20and%20mixture%20is%20smooth.%20In%20medium%20bowl,%20combine%20flour,%20baking%20soda,%20and%20ginger.%20With%20spoon,%20stir%20flour%20mixture%20into%20cream%20mixture%20in%203%20additions%20until%20dough%20is%20too%20stiff%20to%20stir,%20then%20knead%20with%20hands%20until%20flour%20is%20incorporated%20and%20dough%20is%20smooth.%202.%20Divide%20dough%20into%204%20equal%20portions;%20flatten%20each%20into%20a%20disk%20to%20speed%20chilling.%20Wrap%20each%20disk%20well%20with%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20refrigerate%20at%20least%204%20hours%20or%20overnight,%20until%20dough%20is%20firm%20enough%20to%20roll.%20%203.%20Grease%20and%20flour%20large%20cookie%20sheets%20(17-inch%20by%2014-inch/43x36cm)%204.%20Roll%20out%20dough,%201%20disk%20at%20a%20time%20on%20each%20cookie%20sheet%20to%20about%203/16-inch%20thickness.%20(Placing%203/16-inch%20dowels%20or%20rulers%20on%20either%20side%20of%20dough%20to%20use%20as%20a%20guide%20will%20help%20roll%20dough%20to%20uniform%20thickness.)%20%205.%20Trim%20excess%20dough%20from%20cookie%20sheet;%20wrap%20and%20reserve%20in%20refrigerator.%20Chill%20rolled%20dough%20on%20cookie%20sheet%20in%20refrigerator%20or%20freezer%20at%20least%2010%20minutes%20or%20until%20firm%20enough%20to%20cut%20easily.%20%206.%20Preheat%20oven%20to%20300%20degrees%20F%20(149C)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E7.%20Use%20chilled%20rolled%20dough,%20floured%20poster%20board%20patterns,%20and%20sharp%20paring%20knife%20to%20cut%20all%20house%20pieces%20on%20cookie%20sheet,%20making%20sure%20to%20leave%20at%20least%201%201/4%20inches%20between%20pieces%20because%20dough%20will%20expand%20slightly%20during%20baking.%20Wrap%20and%20reserve%20trimmings%20in%20refrigerator.%20Combine%20and%20use%20trimmings%20as%20necessary%20to%20complete%20house%20and%20other%20decorative%20pieces.%20Cut%20and%20bake%20large%20pieces%20and%20small%20pieces%20separately.%208.%20Chill%20for%2010%20minutes%20before%20baking%20if%20the%20dough%20seems%20really%20soft%20after%20you%20cut%20it.%20This%20will%20discourage%20too%20much%20spreading/warping%20of%20the%20shapes%20you%20cut.%20%209.%20Bake%2025%20to%2030%20minutes,%20until%20pieces%20are%20firm%20to%20the%20touch.%20Do%20not%20overbake;%20pieces%20will%20be%20too%20crisp%20to%20trim%20to%20proper%20size.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E10.%20Remove%20cookie%20sheet%20from%20oven.%20While%20house%20pieces%20are%20still%20warm,%20place%20poster-board%20patterns%20on%20top%20and%20use%20them%20as%20guides%20to%20trim%20shapes%20to%20match%20if%20necessary.%20Cool%20pieces%20completely%20before%20attempting%20to%20assemble%20the%20house.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoyal%20Icing%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%201%20large%20egg%20white%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%203%20cups%20(330g)%20powdered%20sugar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%201%20teaspoon%20white%20vinegar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%201%20teaspoon%20almond%20extract%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeat%20all%20ingredients%20until%20smooth,%20adding%20the%20powdered%20sugar%20gradually%20to%20get%20the%20desired%20consistency.%20Pipe%20on%20pieces%20and%20allow%20to%20dry%20before%20assembling.%20If%20you%20aren't%20using%20it%20all%20at%20once%20you%20can%20keep%20it%20in%20a%20small%20bowl,%20loosely%20covered%20with%20a%20damp%20towel%20for%20a%20few%20hours%20until%20ready%20to%20use.%20You%20may%20have%20to%20beat%20it%20slightly%20to%20get%20it%20an%20even%20consistency%20if%20the%20top%20sets%20up%20a%20bit.%20Piped%20on%20the%20house,%20this%20will%20set%20up%20hard%20over%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20I%20have%20had%20experience%20making%20gingerbread%20houses%20and%20sleighs...%20I%20thought%20that%20this%20year%20I%20would%20branch%20out%20and%20try%20making%20a%20gingerbread%20boat.%20I%20figured%20that%20my%20creation%20fit%20into%20the%20respective%20guidelines,%20as%20a%20boat%20could%20be%20considered%20a%20house%20for%20a%20pirate!%20In%20my%20head%20I%20thought%20building%20a%20gingerbread%20boat%20would%20be%20fairly%20simple;%20however,%20I%20was%20completely%20mistaken%20:P%20During%20the%20process%20of%20building%20my%20pirate%20house%20I%20had%20to%20have%20many%20people/objects%20assist%20me%20in%20ensuring%20that%20the%20structure%20did%20not%20collapse%20upon%20itself...%20I%20suppose%20I%20was%20a%20bit%20impatient,%20and%20should%20have%20taken%20my%20time%20building%20the%20base%20structure%20before%20attempting%20to%20attach%20the%20%22deck%22%20but%20I%20am%20not%20one%20for%20being%20patient%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20gingerbread%20building.%20As%20the%20picture%20below%20reveals,%20a%20Toblerone%20bar%20is%20perfect%20for%20holding%20the%20back%20of%20the%20ship%20in%20place%20while%20the%20icing%20dries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20ship%20and%20it's%20horrid%20decor...%20why%20are%20the%20waves%20made%20of%20peppermint?%20What%20is%20a%20snake%20doing%20in%20the%20ocean?%20Why%20are%20the%20cannons%20so%20exposed?%20Why%20does%20the%20mast%20not%20have%20a%20sail?%20Why%20are%20there%20no%20railings%20on%20the%20main%20deck?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuffice%20it%20to%20say,%20I%20do%20not%20recommend%20that%20anybody%20ride%20on%20this%20ship%20as%20I'm%20sure%20it%20would%20not%20pass%20its%20safety%20inspection.%20And%20any%20poor%20gingerbread%20sailor/pirate%20who%20boards%20the%20USS%20Toblerone%20will%20probably%20meet%20a%20very%20mushy%20demise.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
