Receta Easy, Saucy, Steak Pizzaiola (Meatless too!)

A few months ago I posted a Meatless Steak Pizzaiola recipe from my upcoming cookbook, Homestyle Meals Made Meatless. It has become one of our most popular posts. (You can read the original here). So today I am making it even easier plus including the beef version for all you non-vegetarians, using our Mama’s Mediterranean Red Wine Sauce mix.

Heat 2 Tbsp olive oil in a skillet. Brown a two pound steak (about an inch thick) on each side, about 3 minutes. Remove steak from skillet and set aside. Add 1 bell pepper (diced) and 4 ounces of sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Cook 3-4 minutes or until tender. Add 1/2 cup red wine, 1/4 cup sliced black olives (I used Kalamatas), a 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes and the Red Wine Mama’s Mediterranean Sauce mix. Stir together and simmer for 15 minutes or until it starts to thicken.

Return the steak to the skillet and cook until desired doneness (adding a bit of water if necessary). Serve steak topped with sauce and shredded cheese (optional). Serves 6.

Meatless version: Heat oil in skillet and cook the bell pepper and mushrooms until tender. Add the red wine, black olives, crushed tomatoes and Red Wine Mama’s Mediterranean Sauce mix. Simmer for 15 minutes or until sauce starts to thicken. Add 6 meatless steaks(I used Worthingtons Stakelets) or burgers to the skillet and cook for an additional 15 minutes. Serve topped with sauce and shredded cheese (optional).

As you can see here, I only made half of the recipe, using 3 Tbsp of the Mama’s Mediterranean mix (and saving the remaining amount for some other night), and 2 cups of canned crushed tomatoes from last summers’ garden.

We enjoyed the meatless version with baked sweet potato, steamed Brussels sprouts, and some homemade sourdough bread. A gourmet meal prepared quickly and easily!
