Receta Ellary's Greens: Proving That Eating "Green" Can Be Exciting!

Last week, I was lucky enough to try Ellary's Greens in one of the historic storefronts on Carmine Street (#33 to be exact) and I was dazzled by the super farm to table freshness of this 1 1/2-year-old eatery—which named after owner Leith Hill’s grandmother and great grandmother. The decor is quaint, with exposed brick walls, dim lighting, old-fashioned glass cases filled with healthy desserts, and high ceilings featuring an overlay of laser cut metal (the motif seems to be of leaves growing on stems, almost like a beanstalk).

%20and%20I%20was%20dazzled%20by%20the%20super%20farm%20to%20table%20freshness%20of%20this%201%201/2-year-old%20eatery%E2%80%94which%20named%20after%20owner%20Leith%20Hill%E2%80%99s%20grandmother%20and%20great%20grandmother.%20The%20decor%20is%20quaint,%20with%20exposed%20brick%20walls,%20dim%20lighting,%20old-fashioned%20glass%20cases%20filled%20with%20healthy%20desserts,%20and%20high%20ceilings%20featuring%20an%20overlay%20of%20laser%20cut%20metal%20(the%20motif%20seems%20to%20be%20of%20leaves%20growing%20on%20stems,%20almost%20like%20a%20beanstalk).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreen%20Thai%20Curry%20TofuEach%20item%20on%20the%20menu%20is%20marked%20off%20as%20vegetarian,%20dairy%20free,%20gluten%20free%20or%20vegan,%20so%20if%20you%20have%20special%20dietary%20needs,%20they%20can%20take%20care%20of%20you.%20For%20extra%20fun,%20sit%20at%20the%20big%20wooden%20table%20in%20the%20front%20window%20that%20has%20a%20giant%20terrarium%20in%20the%20center!%E2%80%8E%20The%20veggies%20and%20produce%20are%20sourced%20locally%20and%20vivacious%20owner%20Leith%20Hill--who%20was%20raised%20in%20a%20healthy%20household%20in%20New%20Orleans,%20which%20was%20probably%20an%20oddity%20at%20the%20time--says%20that%20her%20dad%20had%20a%20strong%20interest%20in%20the%20connection%20between%20activity%20and%20healthy%20eating%20since%20he%20was%2012.%20So%20he%20raised%20his%20family%20with%20healthy%20substitutes%20for%20sugary%20snacks%20and%20other%20foods%20with%20empty%20calories.%20This%20probably%20accounts%20for%20the%20fact%20that%20the%20desserts%20here%20seem%20so%20rich%20and%20creamy,%20but%20they%20are%20made%20with%20almond%20flour%20and%20ground%20chickpeas--and%20the%20icing%20usually%20consists%20of%20whipped%20tofu%20or%20coconut%20cream.%20It%20is%20fun%20to%20start%20out%20with%20one%20of%20their%20fabulous%20juices%20or%20smoothies.%20I%20had%20The%20Lunatic%20($7-$9)%20which%20features%20celery,%20cilantro,%20apple,%20cucumber,%20ginger%20and%20cayenne%20pepper%20and%20loved%20it%E2%80%94and%20maybe%20it%20was%20psychological,%20but%20I%20felt%20instantly%20energized!%20Leith%20told%20my%20dining%20partner%20Gail%20and%20I%20that%20that%20the%20Ellary%E2%80%99s%20Green%20staff%20are%20proud%20to%20know%20every%20farmer%20they%20get%20supplies%20from,%20and%20that%20she%20has%20been%20on%20some%20of%20these%20farms%20herself.%20Nothing%20comes%20from%20any%20further%20away%20than%20Pennsylvania%20and%20that%20includes%20the%20meat%20(she%20makes%20sure%20it%20comes%20from%20farms%20where%20animals%20are%20humanly%20raised%20and%20killed).%20You%20might%20be%20surprised%20that%20a%20health-conscious%20eatery%20serves%20red%20meat%20but%20Leith%20says%20that%20she%20does%20not%20want%20to%20scare%20away%20carnivore%20customers%20(which%20she%20says%20tends%20to%20be%20more%20men%20than%20women).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Cauliflower%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20an%20appetizer,%20the%20restaurant's%20famous%20House-Smoked%20Deviled%20Eggs%20were%20brought%20out%20(you%20get%20two%20for%20$10).%20Ellary%E2%80%99s%20kitchen%20staff%20keeps%20a%20smoker%20downstairs%20and%20that's%20what%20gives%20the%20deviled%20eggs%20that%20distinctive%20taste.%20While%20this%20is%20obviously%20an%20item%20made%20easily%20enough%20at%20home,%20people%20flock%20to%20Ellary's%20for%20their%20smoky%20taste%20%E2%80%9Cbecause%20there%20is%20nothing%20quite%20like%20them%E2%80%9D%20according%20to%20a%20regular%20customer.%20We%20had%20glasses%20of%20organic%20white%20house%20wine%20($8)%20right%20afterwards%20and%20what%20Leith%20told%20us%20about%20it%20was%20true%E2%80%94you%20do%20not%20get%20a%20headache%20when%20there%20are%20no%20sulfates%20used!%20It%E2%80%99s%20cute%20how%20the%20wine%20is%20served%20in%20why%20I%20call%20%E2%80%9CItalian%20grandpa%E2%80%9D%20glasses%20instead%20of%20traditional%20wine%20glasses.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChicken%20Salad%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20Chicken%20Salad%20($14)%20was%20terrific%E2%80%94the%20organic%20free-range%20white%20meat%20chicken%20was%20shredded%20and%20served%20with%20a%20homemade%20aioli%20dressing%20and%20then%20finely%20chopped%20hazelnuts,%20capers,%20red%20onions%20and%20lemon%20confit%20were%20folded%20in.%20The%20chicken%20was%20juicy%20and%20tender%20and%20the%20two-plus%20cup%20serving%20was%20extremely%20filling.%20I%20actually%20suggest%20this%20as%20an%20entr%C3%A9e%20because%20of%20how%20filling%20it%20is.%20As%20entrees,%20my%20dining%20partner%20Gail%20and%20I%20shared%20the%20Green%20Thai%20Tofu%20Curry%20($15)%20and%20the%20Crispy%20Roasted%20Chicken%20Breast%20($14).%20The%20Green%20Thai%20Tofu%20Curry%E2%80%99s%20creamy%20green%20sauce%20was%20made%20with%20farm%20fresh%20yogurt%20and%20had%20just%20the%20right%20kick%20from%20a%20bit%20of%20fresh%20ginger%20and%20of%20course,%20the%20curry.%20The%20organic%20string%20beans%20and%20sweet%20potatoes%20tasted%20fresh%20picked%20and%20the%20tofu%20was%20nicely%20cubed.%20The%20curry%20was%20served%20with%20a%20large%20bowl%20of%20brown%20rice.%E2%80%8E%20The%20Crispy%20Roasted%20Chicken%20is%20served%20sliced%20(about%201%E2%80%9D%20thick)%20and%20was%20so%20tender%20than%20not%20even%20a%20knife%20was%20needed%20to%20cut%20it%E2%80%94but%20the%20delicious%20golden%20skin%20was%20the%20part%20I%20really%20savored%20and%20ate%20slowly!%20There%20were%20some%20creamy%20pureed%20celery%20roots%20on%20the%20side.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELebanese%20Stuffed%20Zucchini%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20especially%20excited%20to%20try%20the%20farm%20fresh%20veggies.%20At%20Ellary's%20Greens,%20not%20much%20salt%20or%20pepper%20is%20used%20is%20used%20but%20you%20can%20ask%20for%20sea%20salt%20and%20a%20fresh%20pepper%20grinder%20for%20the%20table.%20Leith%20prefers%20her%20cook%20staff%20to%20flavor%20with%20herbs%20instead%20of%20salt%20and%20pepper%20because%20it's%20healthier%20and%20in%20her%20eyes,%20more%20flavorful.%20I%20tried%20the%20Roasted%20Cauliflower%20($8)%20which%20really%20tasted%20like%20it%20was%20just%20picked%20and%20served%20very%20lightly%20herbed%20with%20thyme%20and%20lemon%20confit,%20and%20then%20the%20Lebanese%20Stuffed%20Zucchini%20($8),%20which%20almost%20looked%20like%20two%20large%20veggie%20sushi%20rolls%20lying%20in%20homemade%20yogurt%20tomato%20sauce%20(they%20could%20easily%20be%20cut%20with%20a%20fork%20thanks%20to%20being%20stuffed%20with%20quinoa)!%20I%20also%20ordered%20the%20Yukon%20Gold%20Mashed%20Potatoes%20($8),%20which%20included%20some%20Swiss%20chard%20and%20almonds%20in%20the%20mix%20and%20were%20creamy%20despite%20having%20no%20butter%20included%20in%20the%20recipe%20(the%20potatoes%20are%20whipped%20with%20olive%20oil).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPumpkin%20Spice%20Cake%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20will%20definitely%20return%20to%20Ellary's%20Greens.%20%E2%80%8EI%20like%20the%20personal%20attention%20of%20the%20staff%20and%20the%20freshness%20of%20the%20ingredients.%20I%20also%20love%20the%20fireplace%20in%20the%20back%20and%20hope%20to%20return%20in%20the%20winter%20months%20when%20they%20actually%20light%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEllary's%20Greens%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E33%20Carmine%20Street%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010003%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(212)%20920-5072%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.ellarysgreens.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20Healthy%20Modern%20American%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
