.%20%20I%20have%20been%20trying%20to%20remember%20my%20last%20first%20day%20of%20school,%20which%20would%20have%20been%20my%20third%20year%20of%20law%20school,%20and%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20remember%20anything%20at%20all%20except%20that%20I%20really%20probably%20didn%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20go.%20%20I%20was%20over%20the%20whole%20law%20school%20thing%20before%20it%20even%20started,%20it%20seemed,%20which%20is%20not%20the%20best%20way%20to%20go%20into%20a%20situation%20that%20will%20leave%20you%20in%20debt%20well%20into%20your%20grandchildren%E2%80%99s%20adulthood.%20When%20I%20graduated%20from%20college%E2%80%94aimless,%20jobless%20and%20with%20a%20degree%20in%20International%20Studies%20and%20French%E2%80%94my%20family%20gave%20me%20a%20year%20to%20find%20gainful%20employment%20or%20go%20back%20to%20school.%20%20Easy%20choice%20at%20the%20time.%20%20I%20spent%20the%20summer%20after%20college%20in%20a%20tug%20of%20war%20between%20%E2%80%9Coh%20my%20god,%20how%20embarrassed%20would%20I%20be%20if%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20get%20in%20anywhere%E2%80%9D%20and%20%E2%80%9Coh%20crap,%20if%20I%20actually%20get%20in,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20have%20to%20go.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20reward%20for%20my%20months%20of%20studying%20and%20writing%20essays%20and%20typing%20my%20name%20and%20social%20security%20number%20over%20and%20over%20was%20to%20spend%20four%20months%20in%20Paris.%20%20I%20saved%20all%20of%20my%20money%20from%20the%20job%20I%20had%20for%20six%20months%20so%20that%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20think%20about%20lying%20to%20French%20employers%20about%20having%20a%20work%20visa.%20%20I%20packed%20two%20huge%20suitcases%20and%20tried%20to%20forget%20that%20I%20would%20need%20to%20make%20a%20decision%20about%20the%20rest%20of%20my%20life%20by%20May%201.%20%20I%20had%20no%20idea%20what%20I%20would%20do%20in%20Paris%20for%20four%20months%20by%20myself,%20which%20is%20exactly%20what%20I%20wanted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20days%20quickly%20took%20on%20the%20pattern%20of%20being%20completely%20random;%20%20my%20path%20decided%20based%20on%20how%20I%20felt%20or%20who%20could%20come%20with%20me%20or%20whether%20I%E2%80%99d%20stayed%20out%20too%20late%20the%20night%20before.%20%20%20The%20only%20thing%20I%20did%20almost%20every%20day%20was%20go%20to%20a%20caf%C3%A9%20a%20few%20blocks%20from%20my%20apartment%20called%20Les%20Recettes%20de%20Charlotte.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20this%20beautiful%20tea%20shop%20done%20up%20in%20lavender%20and%20yellow%20and%20run%20by%20a%20striking%20older%20woman%20(I%20never%20got%20up%20the%20courage%20to%20ask%20if%20she%20was%20Charlotte),%20with%20shocking%20silver%20hair%20and%20a%20waist-line%20that%20made%20me%20think%20she%E2%80%99d%20never%20tasted%20any%20of%20the%20pastries%20in%20the%20store.%20%20She%20had%20the%20usual%20croissants%20and%20pain%20au%20chocolat,%20but%20then%20there%20was%20a%20separate%20part%20of%20the%20display%20case%20with%20mille-feuille%20(talk%20to%20me%20about%20why%20they%20are%20called%20Napoleon%E2%80%99s%20in%20English%E2%80%A6),%20and%20pot%20de%20cr%C3%A8me%20and%20delicate%20petits%20fours.%20%20I%20sampled%20everything%20at%20least%20once,%20I%20think,%20but%20for%20some%20reason%20I%20always%20returned%20to%20the%20tarte%20aux%20pruneaux,%20the%20plum%20tart.%20It%20was%20kind%20of%20like%20a%20turn-over%20(which%20is%20such%20a%20sad%20way%20to%20describe%20something%20that%20good),%20with%20a%20flaky%20crust%20and%20a%20warm%20sweet%20filling.%20%20I%20would%20order%20my%20tart%20and%20a%20cup%20of%20one%20of%20her%20specialty%20teas%20and%20she%E2%80%99d%20serve%20it%20to%20me%20on%20beautiful%20china.%20%20I%E2%80%99d%20sit%20there%20for%20hours%20reading%20or%20writing%20in%20my%20journal%20and%20she%E2%80%99d%20walk%20around%20the%20store%20and%20we%20never%20spoke%20once,%20even%20though%20the%20place%20was%20usually%20empty.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20that%20I%20was%20on%20my%20way%20there%20when%20I%20dropped%20my%20deposit%20for%20the%20law%20school%20I%20finally%20chose%20in%20the%20mailbox.%20%20I%20probably%20ordered%20two%20tarts%20that%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20discovered%20that%20Charlotte%20and%20her%20tarts%20have%20moved%20on%20to%20places%20unknown%20[to%20me].%20%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20find%20a%20recipe%20that%20even%20comes%20close%20to%20what%20she%20made,%20but%20this%20one%20I%20made%20up%20will%20do%20in%20a%20pinch,%20especially%20since%20I%20cheated%20and%20used%20pre-made%20pie%20dough.%20%20%20Italian%20prune%20plums%20are%20in%20season%20right%20now,%20and%20they%20are%20a%20perfect%20balance%20between%20sweet%20and%20tart.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAny%20pre-made%20dough%20will%20work,%20and%20I%20did%20mini-double%20crust%20pies,%20but%20you%20could%20fold%20them%20over%20to%20make%20turnovers%20or%20make%20one%20big%20tart,%20if%20you%20want.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20if%20only%20someone%20would%20serve%20one%20to%20me%20on%20fine%20china%20with%20a%20cup%20of%20tea%E2%80%A6.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENot%20Quite%20Charlotte%E2%80%99s%20Plum%20Tart%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20pre-made%20pie%20crust%20(thawed)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees%20and%20line%20baking%20sheet%20with%20parchment%20paper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20plums%20in%20half,%20using%20line%20down%20center%20as%20a%20guide;%20remove%20pit%20and%20cut%20plum%20into%20quarters.%20%20Put%20%20plums,%20sugar%20and%20water%20into%20saucepan%20over%20medium%20and%20cook%20until%20%20plums%20have%20softened%20a%20bit%20but%20still%20have%20some%20firmness.%20%20Pour%20a%20bit%20of%20the%20liquid%20in%20to%20a%20cup%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20cornstarch.%20%20Add%20this%20mixture%20back%20to%20the%20saucepan%20with%20the%20plums%20and%20stir%20until%20liquid%20thickens.%20%20Let%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20out%20pie%20dough%20and%20using%20a%20small%20saucer%20as%20a%20guide,%20cut%20out%20four%20equal%20circles.%20%20Place%20on%20parchment%20paper%20and%20add%20filling%20to%20middle%20of%20two%20of%20the%20circles.%20%20Cover%20with%20rest%20of%20dough,%20crimping%20edges%20all%20the%20way%20around.%20%20Brush%20with%20egg%20wash.%20%20Bake%20for%2020%20minutes%20or%20until%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
