Receta Five Bean Salad, mouse mysteries
Three Bean Salad is a summer classic – at least in the Midwest of the U.S.
The ‘three beans’ are usually green and yellow string beans, and red kidney beans.
Since I have three different beans growing in my potager, and a four bean salad would be boring. I decided on Five Bean Salad.
Five Bean Salad
Total time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
- 6oz (180gr) green beans, trimmed and cut into 1″ lengths
- 6oz (180gr) yellow Romano beans, trimmed and cut into 1″ lengths
- 6oz (180fr) Green Zebra, trimmed and cut into 1″ lengths
- 8oz (240gr) red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 8oz (240gr) white kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 shallot, finely chopped
- 1 tbs brown sugar
- 1 tbs Dijon-style mustard
- 3 tbs tarragon white wine vinegar
- 3 tbs good olive oil
Instructions:
Bring a medium saucepan half full of water to a boil over high heat.
Add beans and blanch for 4 minutes, until just tender.
Drain beans and immediately submerge in an equal amount of very cold water.
Drain again, spread out on paper towels and pat dry.
Put into a serving bowl.
Add red and white beans, green pepper and shallot.
Vinaigrette:
In small bowl whisk together the sugar, mustard and vinegar.
Slowly add the oil whisking constantly.
Pour over beans and toss to combine.
Set aside for at least 15 minutes. Serve. This keeps for several days in the fridge.
The girl-dogs have been having some difficulties.
As is typical in the fall, we have been invaded – the spiders are showing up in droves, as well as the centipedes.
The girls don’t care about those.critters.
They do care about the mice that have started moving in…. Mainly because the mice are eating their favorite dog treats.
I keep their training treats in a little bag in the pantry.
The last couple of evenings there has been a lot of scurrying in the pantry: little tiny paws followed by great big paws.
The dogs started spending a lot of time in the pantry, watching and waiting, but no luck.
The treats were still disappearing; the mouse was still scurrying.
It was time for human intervention.
Mon mari set the trap.
Every morning I get up, brush my teeth and throw my work clothes on.
While I do this the dogs are quiet.
I walk out into the hall, towards the stairs.
The dogs are still quiet.
When I reach the top of the stairs, and they see me, they go crazy, jumping up and down, pulling each other’s tails and ears, barking, spinning and generally creating a ruckus.
This morning….. Nothing.
I started walking down the stairs.
Bonnie was at the bottom, sitting calmly, looking at me.
Guapa was nowhere is sight.
I had a moment of panic….
I called her name and took a few more steps.
Then I saw her standing on Bonnie’s bed with something in her mouth.
She realized (they can be a little slow) that it must be ‘walk time’, dropped her toy and came running.
I saw a tail sticking out of whatever she dropped.
I shouted up the stairs for mon mari to deal with it (I don’t do dead things) and we went for our walk.
By the time we came home the mouse was duly dispatched.
Mon mari said that, other than being dead, it was unharmed.
And the cleanest mouse he had ever seen.
I tell myself Guapa was just trying to lick the peanut butter off the trap…..
