%20and%20the%20only%20thing%20we%20know%20how%20to%20cook%20properly%20%20is%20Roast%20Beef.%20%20We%20think%20they%20have%20a%20tendency%20to%20be%20a%20bit%20laisser%20faire%20about%20life%20.%20.%20.%20they%20take%20too%20long%20to%20eat%20.%20.%20.%20they%20eat%20far%20too%20much%20garlic,%20and%20they%20are%20missing%20cheddar%20in%20their%20cheese%20shops%20(only%20the%20best%20cheese%20in%20the%20world,%20lol)%20.%20.%20.%20not%20to%20mention,%20they%20eat%20some%20pretty%20strange%20things%20like%20escargots%20and%20frogs%20legs%20.%20.%20.%20%20oh,%20and%20all%20%20the%20men%20have%20mistresses%20.%20.%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Note%20.%20.%20.%20these%20are%20only%20random%20generalizations%20.%20.%20.%20and%20not%20the%20way%20I%20really%20think.%20%20I%20am%20merely%20taking%20a%20fun%20poke%20at%20things.%20%20My%20father%20is%20French.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20reality,%20I%20love%20French%20food%20and%20patisserie%20.%20.%20.%20I%20always%20have%20done%20.%20.%20.%20especially%20the%20rustic%20country%20fare%20.%20.%20.%20and%20who%20does%20bread%20better%20than%20the%20French???%20%20%20I%20don't%20think%20anyone%20can%20beat%20their%20bread%20.%20.%20.%20the%20first%20thing%20I%20do%20when%20we%20go%20across%20to%20Calais%20on%20the%20Ferry%20is%20to%20indulge%20in%20a%20fresh%20Almond%20Croissant%20.%20.%20.%20and%20don't%20get%20me%20started%20on%20their%20Macarons%20.%20.%20.%20I%20just%20adore%20them.%20%20I%20could%20quite%20happily%20spend%20a%20week%20in%20a%20French%20Patisserie,%20indulging%20all%20of%20my%20whims%20and%20pastry%20fantasies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20cake%20here%20today%20is%20a%20recipe%20which%20I%20gleaned%20from%20one%20of%20my%20favourite%20cookery%20books%20%22Under%20the%20Walnut%20Tree,%20great%20recipes%20from%20our%20kitchen%22%20by%20mother%20and%20daughter,%20%20Anna%20and%20Fanny%20Bergenstrom.%20%20No,%20they%20are%20not%20French.%20%20They're%20Swedish,%20but%20their%20cooking%20is%20a%20happy%20mix%20of%20all%20things%20European,%20including%20this%20lovely%20cake,%20entitled%20%22Granny's%20French%20Pear%20and%20Almond%20Cake.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20a%20lovely%20cake,%20gluten%20free%20.%20.%20.%20loaded%20with%20beautiful%20ripe%20pears%20.%20.%20.%20ground%20almonds%20%20.%20.%20.%20and%20I%20added%20a%20touch%20of%20ground%20cardamom%20as%20pears%20and%20cardamom%20are%20such%20a%20quintessentially%20beautiful%20partnership%20and%20marriage%20of%20flavours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20end%20result%20is%20a%20cake%20that%20is%20a%20beautiful%20light%20.%20.%20.%20%20almost%20ethereal%20.%20.%20.%20creation.%20%20Simple%20and%20yet%20divine.%20%20Feel%20free%20to%20make%20this%20in%20individual%20dishes%20if%20you%20wish.%20%20That%20would%20be%20so%20sweet%20upon%20the%20table%20I%20think%20.%20.%20.%20for%20today%20though,%20I%20just%20baked%20it%20in%20one%208%20by%2010%20porcelain%20baking%20dish%20.%20.%20.%20and%20it%20looked%20every%20bit%20as%20lovely%20as%20it%20tasted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*French%20Pear,%20Almond%20and%20Cardamom%20Cake*%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%204%20to%205%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elight%20cake,%20stogged%20full%20of%20lovely%20sweet%20pears,%20ground%20almonds%20and%20just%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20merest%20hint%20of%20cardamom,%20which%20goes%20so%20very%20well%20with%20the%20pear.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20warm%20with%20some%20pouring%20cream.%20%20If%20I%20am%20not%20mistaken%20this%20is%20also%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egluten%20free.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20200*C/400*F/%20gas%20mark%206.%20%20Butter%20an%20oven%20proof%20dish%20with%20the%20soft%20butter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeel%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eyour%20pears,%20core%20them%20and%20then%20cut%20them%20into%20thick%20wedges.%20%20Arrange%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewedges%20in%20the%20prepared%20baking%20dish%20and%20then%20pop%20them%20into%20the%20heated%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eoven%20for%2010%20to%2015%20minutes,%20while%20you%20mix%20together%20the%20batter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECream%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etogether%20the%20butter%20and%20caster%20sugar%20until%20light.%20%20Stir%20in%20the%20ground%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ealmonds,%20cardamom%20and%20salt.%20%20Beat%20in%20the%20eggs,%20one%20at%20a%20time.%20%20Stir%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ein%20the%20lemon%20juice%20until%20the%20mixture%20is%20smooth%20and%20combined.%20%20Remove%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20baking%20dish%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20spread%20the%20almond%20batter%20over%20top%20of%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20pear%20wedges.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EReturn%20to%20the%20oven%20and%20bake%20for%20a%20further%2015%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDust%20the%20warm%20cake%20with%20some%20icing%20sugar%20and%20serve%20either%20%20on%20it's%20own,%20or%20with%20some%20pouring%20cream%20or%20vanilla%20bean%20ice%20cream.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
