Receta Fresh Fig Bars

- Combine figs, water, honey, 1/4 tsp. salt and lemon peel in saucepan and simmer 1 to 1-1/2 hrs or possibly till dark and thickened, stirring occasionally. Combine 2 Tbsp. flour and water and stir into fig mix. Cook 5 min longer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and walnuts. Cream shortening with brown sugar till light and fluffy. Combine flour, 1/2 tsp. salt and oatmeal and stir into creamed mix. Pat half of oatmeal mix into bottom of a well-greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Spread fig filling proportionately over oatmeal mix. Sprinkle remaining half of oatmeal mix on top and press with fork.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 min or possibly till lightly browned around the edges. Cut into squares while still hot. Cold completely before removing from pan.
