Receta Fried Plantain
by Gourmet Mama

Here in Guatemala, plantains are a popular food and if you ever order a traditional breakfast, you’ll end up with at least a few slices of “platano frito” on your plate. They are not as much like bananas as you might think. For one, plantain are not as sweet and have a thicker texture to them, perfect for frying.

The process is simple, but the end result is delicious.

Fried Plantain with Cream

Serves 4

Peel the plantain, then chop in half across. Slice each piece lengthwise . . . you should get about 4-6 slices out of each one.

In a skillet, heat a small amount of oil until very hot. Drop the slices of plantain into the oil and let them cook until golden brown, around 2-3 minutes, then flip. Cook until the other side is golden, about 1 min.

Drain on paper towel, then arrange on a plate. Serve sprinkled with sugar and drizzled with cream, or just pour a little honey over them. These are traditionally served with refried beans and eggs.
