Receta #GetOutside, #EatClean and win with @LÄRABAR {LÄRABAR giveaway!}
When LÄRABAR asked me to take a hike in celebration of National Take a Hike Day on November 17th, I was happy to take my dog, Nellie over to a local hiking trail and dog park. Well, Nellie had other plans as I’ll share shortly.
Why I love LÄRABAR!
I’ve been a big fan of LÄRABAR products for ages since they’re naturally gluten free and delicious. Each 1.6 ounce bar is non-GMO, gluten free, Kosher, and some are even Fair Trade Certified. I keep a few in my purse and always travel with them, since you never know if there’ll be something on the plane, airport or hotel that you can eat. My favorite LÄRABAR flavors are pecan pie and cherry pie though I’ve never had a LÄRABAR I didn’t like!
I was thrilled that along with a cool LÄRAbag, they sent me some of their new RENOLA granola. I’m passing these on to my husband, as he loves putting granola on the yogurt he takes to work. RENOLA is a grain free, gluten free mix of non-GMO fruits, nuts and seeds and available in a convenient, single-serve packets. It comes in three flavors: Cinnamon Nut, Cocoa Coconut and Berry.
#GetOutside with LÄRABAR
On the day of our planned hike, I decided to step out the back door and check the weather. Well, Nellie, our beagle mix, shot out and headed for our backyard – 3.5 acres of Georgia woods boarded by even more acres and acres of woods belonging to our neighbors as well as undeveloped open space. If you’ve ever watched The Walking Dead, that’s what my backyard looks like. But with no walkers, a lot more brambles, and chipmunks, which is what Nellie was after.
I quickly put on the nice hiking socks LÄRABAR sent me, my boots, a hat, grabbed a few LÄRABARs, some doggie treats, and Nellie’s leash, and headed down the trail.
Luckily, it’s fall and the ticks aren’t that bad. (I always wonder how Rick and the gang on The Walking Dead aren’t bothered by ticks. Maybe they’re infesting the walkers, who knows?) Otherwise, I don’t venture much into our woods. Snakes, ticks, brambles, gullies, sticks to trip over, and holes to fall into. Not my idea of fun. But Nellie and my husband (who hunts back there) love it. Then I got to this part and thought it was rather pretty.
You expect Michon and Daryl to show up any minute, eh? Wish I brought more LÄRABARs to share with them!
Our wood are deceptive. The drop off is steep and within a few hundred feet, you’re down in the valley below. Also, even though it’s fall and the trees are beginning to shed their leaves, I was still afraid of getting lost. (I did have my phone with me just in case.) I made sure to turn around and keep my house within site. (This picture is about halfway down the trail.)
I was trying to find Nellie and was concerned that she had run off into the undeveloped open space that’s behind ours. Then I spotted her digging for chipmunks under a half rotted tree trunk.
I watched her for a while, hoping she’d exhaust herself and follow me out. After all, this used to be the dog that would walk next to me needing no leash while I strolled around the neighborhood. However, when she’s in the middle of a chipmunk digging frenzy, all bets are off. She eventually ran off into a tangle of bushes and trees. I headed towards the house, hoping she’d come back up when she was tired. While I was headed up the trail, which is steeper than it looks going down , I saw her go up towards our back deck, but when I got there, no such luck.
I took a LÄRABAR and water break and headed around the other side of the house. I spotted Nellie headed towards our neighbor’s woods. So back down the path I went, then through the woods again, and then to the Edwards’ woods, hoping eventually I’d find her. And there I found Nellie, in the creek, digging away in the red Georgia clay.
Eventually, she tired herself out and laid down in the middle of the creek. Splat, right in the mud! Faced with no alternative, I stepped into the creek, got the leash on her, and half carried her up the other bank. Otherwise, it was a steep 100 yard hike back up to our property. No thank you!
We walked through the Edwards’ woods, through their front yard, down their long driveway, and up the street to our house. Then it was back into our house, where I stripped down (had to get those muddy boots and jeans off and check myself for ticks – yuck!) and then got Nellie into the tub for a bath. That was followed by getting the mud off the bathroom floor and bedroom carpet. I was exhausted, but had to get some work done. So I had a LÄRABAR and a diet soda at my desk instead of lunch. No rest for the busy!
All in all, we had a good two hour workout thanks to LÄRABAR! (And yes, Nellie knew she was a bad girl. When the kids came home from, she hid in my room and shivered when I told them the story. She’s not dumb. Just addicted to digging for chipmunks.)
