%20She%20told%20me%20that%20she%20had%20tried%20to%20track%20down%20the%20recipe%20a%20year%20ago%20and%20no%20one%20seemed%20to%20know%20where%20it%20was.%20I%20just%20laughed%20and%20explained%20that%20it%20only%20took%20a%20week%20and%20a%20half%20of%20harassing%20phone%20calls%20to%20get%20it.%20Persistence.%20When%20I%20was%20finished%20telling%20of%20my%20quest%20for%20grandma's%20dumpling%20recipe%20she%20said,%20%22You'll%20have%20to%20send%20it%20to%20me.%22%20To%20which%20I%20replied,%20%22It'll%20be%20on%20my%20blog.%22%20Do%20you%20know%20what%20she%20said?%20%22Oh,%20I%20don't%20read%20that.%20I%20don't%20have%20time.%22%20Dude!%20You're%20not%20supposed%20to%20tell%20me%20that%20you%20don't%20read%20my%20blog.%20Just%20pretend%20that%20you're%20interested.%20Geesh!%20I'm%20still%20laughing%20about%20it.%20In%20her%20defense,%20she%20is%20a%20very%20busy%203rd%20grade%20teacher%20and%20mommy%20to%20two%20rambunctious%20little%20boys%20aged%202%20and%204.%20Still,%20I%20haven't%20called%20her%20with%20the%20recipe...Hahaha.(That's%20my%20evil%20big%20sister%20laugh.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBet%20you're%20reading%20now,%20Karla.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20it%20is:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20begin%20by%20stirring%20the%20flour%20and%20baking%20powder%20together.%20Then%20cut%20in%202/3%20cup%20of%20shortening.%20By%20shortening,%20I%20mean%20Crisco.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20stir%20in%20some%20milk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20knead%20my%20dough%20a%20few%20times%20in%20the%20bowl,%20just%20until%20it%20forms%20a%20ball.%20Too%20much%20kneading%20and%20you'll%20have%20a%20tough%20crust.%20You%20want%20it%20nice%20and%20tender.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20rolling%20out%20the%20dough,%20let's%20make%20the%20sauce.%20Combine%20water,%20sugar,%20cinnamon,%20nutmeg,%20and%20a%20stick%20of%20butter%20in%20a%20saucepan.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20Stir%20until%20the%20sugar%20dissolves.%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20roll%20out%20the%20dumplings.%20I%20used%20a%20tip%20from%20my%20husband's%20grandma%20and%20rolled%20out%20the%20dough%20between%20sheets%20of%20waxed%20paper.%20I%20floured%20the%20bottom%20sheet%20to%20keep%20the%20dough%20from%20sticking.%20I%20think%20I%20ended%20up%20rolling%20this%20to%201/4%22%20thickness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20the%20dough%20into%206%20squares.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeel%20a%20baking%20apple.%20Each%20dumpling%20can%20accommodate%20about%20half%20of%20an%20apple.%20I%20cut%20each%20half%20into%203-5%20pieces%20and%20arrange%20them%20in%20the%20center%20of%20the%20square%20of%20dough.%20My%20grandma%20used%20to%20place%20a%20whole%20half%20of%20an%20apple%20in%20the%20center,%20seeds%20cut%20out,%20skin%20still%20on.%20Baked%20apple%20skin%20isn't%20my%20cup%20of%20tea,%20so%20I%20peeled%20mine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESprinkle%20the%20apples%20with%20sugar,%20cinnamon,%20and%20nutmeg.%20I%20used%20about%201/2%20tablespoon%20of%20the%20sugar%20mixture%20per%20dumpling.%20Dot%20with%20butter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20wrap%20them%20up,%20lightly%20brush%20all%20four%20edges%20with%20water,%20then%20fold%20each%20corner%20up%20to%20the%20center.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPinch%20the%20edges%20together%20to%20seal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETransfer%20the%20dumplings%20to%20a%20rectangular%20baking%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20some%20extra%20dough%20left%20over,%20so%20I%20used%20a%20small,%20heart-shaped%20cookie%20cutter%20to%20cut%20a%20topper%20for%20each%20dumpling.%20A%20little%20leaf%20or%20apple%20shape%20would%20be%20pretty%20here%20too!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20sauce%20into%20the%20pan%20of%20dumplings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20ready%20for%20the%20oven!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20at%20375%20degrees%20for%2045%20minutes.%20They%20turn%20a%20gorgeous%20golden%20brown%20color.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELook%20how%20sweet!%20They%20reminded%20me%20of%20a%20Valentine%20or%20love%20note%20sealed%20with%20a%20heart%20shaped%20sticker.%20Made%20with%20love...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDon't%20forget%20the%20ice%20cream!%20Or%20eat%20em'%20like%20my%20dad%20and%20I%20do,%20topped%20with%20some%20cold%20milk%20or%20fresh%20cream.%20Mmmm.%20Just%20typing%20this%20makes%20me%20want%20to%20walk%20into%20the%20kitchen%20right%20now%20and%20scoop%20up%20that%20last%20one.%20Thank%20goodness%20for%20self%20control...I'll%20wait%20until%20midnight.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrandma%20Bailey's%20Apple%20Dumplings%20%20adapted%20by%20me%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20dumplings:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20the%20ingredients%20to%20a%20boil,%20stirring%20occasionally%20until%20the%20sugar%20is%20dissolved.%20Pour%20into%20the%20dumpling%20filled%20baking%20dish.%20Bake%20dumplings%20at%20375%20degrees%20for%2045%20minutes%20or%20until%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThank%20you,%20Dad%20for%20taking%20the%20time%20to%20find%20and%20send%20grandma's%20recipe!%20I'm%20glad%20I%20finally%20have%20this%20heirloom%20recipe%20in%20my%20possession.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
