%20would%20have%20made%20granola%20before.%20%20No%20pun%20intended.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut,%20I%20had%20not%20until%20this%20morning.%20%20Why%20not%20until%20now?%20I%20think%20the%20idea%20of%20heating%20up%20the%20oven%20and%20having%20to%20stir%20something%20rather%20spill-able%20on%20cookie%20sheets%20%20gave%20me%20the%20second%20thoughts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhy%20now?%20%20Let%E2%80%99%20see%E2%80%A6Steve%20will%20eat%20oatmeal,%20but%20he%20really%20likes%20to%20put%20all%20kinds%20of%20stuff%20in%20it,%20which%20means%20breakfast%20featuring%20oatmeal%20was%20turning%20into%20a%20big%20procedure,%20with%20having%20to%20keep%20in%20stock%20and%20set%20out%20each%20time%20all%20the%20nut,%20seed,%20and%20dried%20fruit%20%E2%80%9Ccondiments.%E2%80%9D%20%20%20I%20griped,%20and%20Steve%20suggested%20granola.%20%20%E2%80%9CGood%20idea,%E2%80%9D%20%20I%20thought,%20but%20then%20remembered%20that%20most%20store-bought%20granolas%20are%20high%20in%20fat,%20include%20high-fructose%20corn%20syrup,%20and%20can%20have%20scary-sounding%20ingredients%20in%20them.%20%20Time%20to%20make%20my%20own!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20looked%20around%20online%20and%20found%20a%20few%20recipes%20to%20use%20as%20guidelines,%20made%20sure%20I%20had%20enough%20rolled%20oats,%20and%20picked%20up%20some%20more%20nuts%20and%20dried%20fruit.%20%20%20But%20I%20kept%20putting%20off%20making%20it.%20%20It%20was%20the%20picture%20of%20granola%20spilling%20all%20over%20my%20oven%20as%20I%20stirred%20it%20during%20the%20toasting%20process.%20%20But%20then%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELorna%20Sass%20to%20the%20rescue!%20%20Specifically,%20her%20granola%20recipe%20in%20her%20delightful%20cookbook,%20Recipes%20from%20an%20Ecological%20Kitchen,%20by%20Lorna%20J.%20Sass.%20%20You%20will%20find%20it%20verbatim%20%20at%20the%20end%20of%20this%20post,%20including%20her%20comments%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20is%20why%20I%20like%20it:%20%20She%20gives%20directions%20to%20toast%20the%20granola%20in%20a%20skillet%20rather%20than%20in%20the%20oven!%20%20Okay,%20so%20I%20did%20spill%20on%20the%20stove-top%20while%20stirring,%20but%20that%20is%20ever%20so%20much%20easier%20to%20clean%20up%20than%20if%20granola%20falls%20into%20the%20bottom%20of%20an%20oven.%20%20And,%20as%20she%20notes,%20it%20is%20more%20energy%20efficient%20to%20use%20a%20burner%20for%20a%20few%20minutes%20rather%20than%20heating%20up%20the%20oven%20for%201/2%20an%20hour.%20%20Plus,%20the%20recipe%20is%20low%20in%20fat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20Lorna%E2%80%99s%20recipe%20for%20the%20general%20idea%20of%20proportions,%20but%20I%20used%20all%20oats%20and%20a%20handful%20beyond%20the%20three%20cups,%201/2%20cup%20each%20of%20chopped%20walnuts%20and%20almonds,%20and%20a%20cup%20of%20dried%20fruit%20%E2%80%93%20a%20mix%20of%20pineapple,%20cranberry,%20and%20raisins.%20I%20added%20a%20tad%20extra%20oil%20and%20used%201/2%20cup%20of%20maple%20syrup%20since%20I%20was%20using%20more%20dried%20goods%20than%20called%20for%20in%20the%20original%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebefore%20toasting%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20my%20old%20cast%20iron%20%E2%80%9Cfryer.%E2%80%9D%20I%20really%20need%20to%20season%20it%20because%20I%20have%20used%20it%20quite%20a%20bit%20for%20stews,%20especially%20tomato-based,%20acidic%20dishes,%20and%20have%20not%20keep%20up%20with%20proper%20cleaning%20and%20seasoning%20methods.%20%20But,%20it%20is%20great%20for%20keeping%20most%20of%20the%20granola%20in%20the%20pan!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ejust%20about%20fully%20toasted%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eheat%20turned%20off%20and%20fruit%20added%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECooling%20off.%20Note%20mess%20on%20stove%20top%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20did%20have%20a%20slight%20mishap%20when%20stirring%20the%20granola%20as%20it%20cooled%20and%20opted%20to%20finish%20the%20cooling%20in%20big%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20great%20recipe.%20%20I%20just%20had%20some%20with%20yogurt%20and%20I%20think%20it%20has%20just%20the%20right%20balance%20of%20sweetness,%20crunch,%20and%20chewiness.%20%20So,%20there%20it%20is.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E[Here%20is%20the%20original%20recipe%20from%20Recipes%20from%20an%20Ecological%20Kitchen,%20by%20Lorna%20J.%20Sass.]%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETriple%20Grain%20Granola%20%20%20%20%20Makes%20about%204%20cups%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20advantage%20of%20making%20your%20own%20granola%20is%20that%20you%20can%20control%20the%20amount%20oil%20and%20sweetness%20and,%20ideally,%20use%20all%20organic%20ingredients.%20(Although%20touted%20as%20healthful%20foods,%20many%20commercial%20granola%20mixes%20are%20loaded%20with%20sugar%20and%20fat.)%20Of%20course,%20it%E2%80%99s%20much%20cheaper%20to%20make%20granola%20yourself-and%20very%20simple.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20possibilities%20are%20endless,%20but%20here%20is%20one%20to%20begin%20with.%20%20Unless%20you%20are%20heating%20up%20the%20oven%20for%20another%20purpose,%20the%20most%20fuel-efficient%20way%20to%20prepare%20granola%20is%20to%20pan-toast%20it.%20Make%20up%20a%20big%20batch%20and%20refrigerate%20it%20for%20up%20to%201%20m
