A treat is always welcome! And if it is a healthy one, there is no stopping. Whole-wheat halwa is a famous and an instant sweet treat for unexpected guests in many regions of India. It has a very special & secured place on the breakfast table in many houses of Rajasthan. People of this region don’t wait for reasons or occasions to indulge in sweet. Most are born with a sweet tooth
I must admit that the traditional recipe is heavenly but is surely going to make the readings in your diet chart zoom. What with the oodles of ghee (clarified butter) floating over the dish with crunchy fried nuts. The traditional dish asks for 1 cup each of (wheat flour, ghee and sugar) with just a splash of water in the recipe.
I often make my version of wheat halwa with less of fat and more added nutrients.
Ingredients:
- 3/4-cup whole-wheat flour
- ¼ cup Ragi flour
- 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 1-cup water
- ¾ cup sugar
- A few nuts (almonds, pistachios)
- A pinch of cardamom powder
Method:
Step 1: Heat a heavy bottom kadai and pour ghee in it, add the whole-wheat flour and ragi flour in it.
Step 2: Keep stirring till it is light brown in color and emanates a nutty flavor.
Step 3: Heat 1 cup of water and pour in the flour mix, mix it vigorously to avoid any lumps.
Step 4: Add sugar and coarsely chopped nuts in it.
Step 5: Take off the flame and serve hot.
Easy to make, this any time healthy whole-wheat treat is healthy too. Ragi gives the added nutrients found in wholegrain to the above recipe.
A small secret I often make and store the wheat halwa in refrigerator, at times when I feel to indulge in food I take a big scoop of it and reheat with extra ghee to get the feel of the heavenly traditional recipe Yumm… Hope this remains a secret
