I fell instantly in love with the understated Hecho En Dumbo in the East Village. It is just one long room with exposed brick walls and pipes and pretty much no art on the walls--you would think it was a hipster hang if you just looked at the bar crowd but the dinner crowd is a true mix of folks from the uptown business crowd to local tattoo artists. The food is served in a straightforward manner, with farm to table ingredients, fast service and respectable size portions.

%20or%20the%20roasted%20veal%20sweetbreads%20tostados%20(Tostados%20De%20Molleja,%20$13).%20Rest%20assured,%20if%20you%20love%20experimental%20tacos,%20tostadas%20and%20flautas,%20I%20strongly%20recommend%20this%20place.%20I%20started%20out%20with%20one%20of%20their%20spectacular%20drinks,%20the%20Esmeralda%20($14),%20which%20is%20muddled%20organic%20cucumber%20and%20basil%20leaf%20with%20gin,%20vodka%20and%20lime%20juice.%20I%20love%20cucumber%20and%20basil%20together%20in%20both%20soft%20and%20hard%20drinks,%20and%20this%20cocktail%20blue%20me%20away.%20Each%20sip%20ended%20with%20a%20big%20kick!%20The%20cocktails%20are%20served%20in%20old-school%20margarita%20glasses,%20so%20they%20are%20about%20six%20to%20seven%20ounces%20each.%20I%20started%20with%20the%20Ensalada%20De%20Esparago%20($9),%20which%20was%20a%20cup%20of%20tender%20grilled%20asparagus%20with%20delightful%20pea%20tendrils%20and%20pistachios.%20The%20lemon%20and%20vinaigrette%20dressing%20was%20light%20and%20divine,%20and%20the%20shaved%20aged%20Manchego%20cheese%20on%20top%20made%20the%20salad%20just%20%22sing%22%20as%20they%20say.%20I%20next%20wanted%20to%20bathe%20in%20glorious%20Mexican%20cheesy%20goodness,%20so%20I%20ordered%20the%20Queso%20Fundido%20de%20Huitlacoche%20($16),%20which%20was%20gorgeous%20melted%20Chihuahuan%20and%20Asadero%20cheeses%20with%20saut%C3%A9ed%20huitlachoche%20mushrooms%20melted%20over%20warm%20flour%20tortillas.%20It%20was%20indeed%20stringy%20cheese%20heaven!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Tacos%20De%20Costilla%20($16)%20consisted%20of%20lightly%20salted%20grilled%20steak%20short%20ribs%20served%20with%20chopped%20cilantro%20and%20onion;%20soft%20tacos%20and%20the%20bone%20were%20placed%20on%20the%20side.%20The%20meat%20was%20sustainably%20raised%20and%20highly%20marbleized,%20much%20to%20my%20delight.%20Cooked%20perfectly%20medium%20rare,%20this%20was%20a%20delight.%20I%20was%20thrilled%20that%20I%20got%20to%20pick%20up%20the%20bone%20and%20get%20to%20the%20tenderness%20of%20the%20meat.%20So%20rarely%20do%20restaurants%20serve%20bones%20and%20I%20always%20have%20felt%20that%20the%20best%20meat%20is%20closest%20to%20the%20bone%20(just%20a%20personal%20preference)!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBurritas%20De%20Res%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20the%20urge%20to%20check%20out%20Hecho's%20burritos%20so%20my%20dining%20partner%20Gail%20and%20I%20ordered%20the%20Burritas%20De%20Res%20($18)%20a%20trio%20of%20small%20flour%20burritos%20with%20sirloin%20steak%20that%20had%20been%20stewed%20in%20an%20assortment%20of%20Mexican%20spices%20and%20fresh%20lime%20juice.%20Each%20burrito%20had%20a%20smear%20of%20black%20bean%20puree%20and%20a%20large%20lump%20of%20homemade%20guac%20was%20also%20placed%20in%20the%20center%20of%20the%20dish.%20The%20meat%20was%20super%20tender%20and%20flavorful--this%20is%20another%20dish%20I%20highly%20recommend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECarnitas%20Campechanas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20several%20specials%20of%20the%20house%20(Especiales%20De%20La%20Casa)%20at%20Hecho%20En%20Dumbo%20and%20I%20had%20to%20have%20the%20Carnitas%20Campechanas%20($30),%20which%20features%20tender%20chopped%20Berkshire%20pork%20cheek,%20rib,%20shoulder%20bell%20and%20chicharrons%20served%20with%20homemade%20tortillas%20and%20tomatillo%20avocado%20sauce.%20It%20reminded%20me%20of%20eating%20assorted%20odds%20and%20ends%20at%20a%20traditional%20Cuban%20pig%20roast,%20and%20each%20cut%20was%20delicious,%20juicy%20and%20tender.%20This%20dish%20is%20a%20very%20large%20portion%20and%20I%20highly%20recommend%20it%20for%20pig%20lovers%20who%20want%20to%20venture%20out%20of%20the%20usual%20pork%20cuts%20served%20at%20Modern%20American%20and%20Mexican%20eateries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20plan%20to%20go%20back%20to%20Hecho%20En%20Dumbo--which,%20in%20case%20you%20are%20curious,%20did%20start%20out%20in%20DUMBO%20and%20wound%20up%20in%20the%20East%20Village%20(usually%20restaurants%20move%20in%20the%20opposite%20direction).%20I%20loved%20the%20cordial%20service%20here%20and%20that%20the%20wait%20staff%20could%20explain%20each%20dish%20in%20detail.%20No%20doubt%20about%20it--it's%20a%20smart%20move%20to%20head%20to%20%22Dumbo%22%20when%20you%20want%20top-notch%20fare%20from%20South%20Of%20The%20Border.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHecho%20En%20Dumbo%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E324%20Bowery%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010012%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E212-937-4245%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.hechoendumbo.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20Mexican%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
