I’ve been largely absent from social media for much of the last week. Some of that’s been because of family in town, but a lot of it is because I’ve had my head down, working hard on a new project that I’m really passionate about.

Tell me if any of this sounds familiar.

You’ve been diagnosed with a gluten or dairy allergy and you now feel compelled to hide from all social engagements because facing all the food you can’t eat is too depressing to contemplate.

You want to cook for the church potluck, but you just found out the minister’s allergic to gluten.

You volunteered to bake something for your kid’s class, but you just found out that one of the children has a dairy allergy.

You go to a family gathering where you, the food allergic, have been assured they’ve got you covered, only to discover nobody really had a clue and the only thing you can eat is the veggie tray. Without dip.

Cooking for food allergies can be very confusing and overwhelming.

It’s a tough row to hoe for those of us who have them and have to learn to live with them on a daily basis. But it’s a special kind of difficult for those whose lives intersect ours. We get it. It’s tough. There’s a lot of information out there and you don’t know where to start. Some of you are even afraid to ask us questions (Hint: Please ask! We don’t mind!) because every time you bring up a dish we have to say “I can’t eat that.” I’m sure you’re convinced we can’t eat ANYTHING normal.

I am here to help.

In my circle of friends, I have become That Girl–the person anybody who needs to know something about gluten or dairy allergies in a hurry comes to. I’ve blogged over at my food blog, Pots and Plots, about the recipes I developed as gluten free for my husband. And I’ve started doing the same for my own dairy allergy. I decided to take that information and turn it into a cookbook designed to help those who want to make sure we food allergic feel included but don’t know where to start.

This is a collection of 50 recipes made entirely with simple, NORMAL ingredients or with very simple substitutions that make them gluten free, dairy free, and delicious. I’ve also included cheat sheets for basic meal formulas, lists of foods you should avoid, lists of foods that are naturally gluten and dairy free, and a list of additional resources for those who want to go above and beyond.

Unlike other gluten free, dairy free cookbooks, this one is specifically targeted for those who don’t have to live with this all the time and just want someone to hold their hand to make sure they don’t inadvertently poison their friend or loved one or make them feel ostracized.
