%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99ve%20always%20enjoyed%20technology.%20I%20became%20interested%20in%20it%20when%20my%20Daddy%20started%20working%20for%20Valmont%20Industries%20way,%20way%20back.%20Valmont%20was%20best%20known%20for%20their%20circular%20irrigation%20systems.%20You%20see%20them%20all%20over%20the%20country.%20Those%20big%20towers%20shooting%20life-giving%20water%20onto%20crops%20while%20they%20slowly,%20silently%20circle%20around%20and%20around%20a%20field.%20That%E2%80%99s%20what%20Daddy%20did%20when%20he%20began%20working%20at%20Valmont.%20He%20designed%20irrigation%20systems%20for%20farmers.%20But%20the%20more%20he%20learned%20about%20technology,%20the%20more%20he%20thought%20it%20might%20be%20possible%20to%20tie%20an%20irrigation%20system%20into%20a%20PC%20to%20have%20it%20controlled%20remotely.%20This%20was%20back%20when%20almost%20no%20one%20owned%20a%20PC.%20Most%20computing%20was%20done%20by%20scientists%20in%20white%20coats%20using%20huge%20mainframe%20computers.%20PCs%20were%20hugely%20expensive.%20Far%20too%20expensive%20for%20the%20typical%20farmer%20to%20purchase,%20but%20Daddy%20could%20envision%20what%20we%20now%20experience%20every%20day.%20An%20affordable%20PC%20in%20most%20households.%20His%20idea%20for%20computer-controlled%20farming%20applications%20generated%20a%20lot%20of%20interest%20at%20Valmont%20so%20they%20partnered%20with%20IBM%20to%20explore%20the%20possibility.%20Because%20of%20Daddy%E2%80%99s%20interest%20in%20and%20aptitude%20for%20technology,%20and%20because%20it%20was%20his%20idea%20to%20start%20with,%20he%20was%20asked%20to%20head%20up%20the%20special%20project.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20was%20no%20mouse.%20You%20didn%E2%80%99t%20need%20it%20because%20everything%20was%20text.%20And%20I%20remember%20the%20first%20computer%20game%20I%20ever%20played.%20It%20was%20called%20Colossal%20Cave.%20Some%20of%20you%20will%20remember%20that%20game.%20It%20still%20frustrates%20me%20that%20I%20never%20could%20win%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh,%20wait,%20I%E2%80%99m%20really%20rambling%20aren%E2%80%99t%20I%20and%20I%20know%20you%E2%80%99re%20wondering%20what%20any%20of%20this%20has%20to%20do%20with%20cooking.%20But%20I%20guess%20I%E2%80%99ve%20said%20all%20that%20to%20explain%20my%20fascination%20with%20technology.%20It%20was%20a%20little%20later%20in%20life%20that%20my%20interest%20started,%20but%20once%20it%20did%20I%20knew%20I%E2%80%99d%20found%20what%20I%20was%20meant%20to%20do.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20worked%20for%20years%20in%20technology-related%20fields%20doing%20everything%20from%20college-level%20teaching%20to%20direct%20tech%20support%20to%20supervising%20a%20help%20desk%20with%20a%20large%20crew%20of%20technicians.%20Currently,%20I%E2%80%99m%20a%20full-time%20webmaster%20and%20do%20some%20graphic%20design%20work%20as%20well.%20All%20opportunities%20provided%20by%20technology.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20would%20say%20that%20during%20my%20career%20opening%20up%20the%20worldwide%20web%20is%20probably%20the%20most%20significant%20technological%20development%20that%20I%E2%80%99ve%20seen.%20And%20the%20most%20useful.%20And%20sometimes%20the%20most%20frustrating.%20But%20the%20way%20it%20brings%20us%20together%20is%20remarkable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20recipe%20she%20challenged%20me%20to%20cook%20is%20called%20%E2%80%9CHete%20Bliksem,%E2%80%9D%20which%20translates%20literally%20to%20%E2%80%9CHot%20Lightning.%E2%80%9D%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20explain%20why%20it%E2%80%99s%20called%20that%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20hot%20in%20the%20least%20unless%20maybe%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20use%20enough%20black%20pepper.%20Anyway,%20when%20I%20first%20saw%20the%20recipe%20I%20thought,%20what%20in%20the%20world%E2%80%A6.apples,%20potatoes%20and%20bacon%E2%80%A6.together??%20But,%20because%20it%20was%20a%20challenge,%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20very%20hard%20for%20me%20to%20back%20away%20from%20a%20challenge%20being%20the%20competitive%20soul%20that%20I%20am,%20I%20forged%20ahead.%20And%20I%20am%20so%20very%20glad%20that%20I%20did.%20The%20Hete%20Bliksem%20is%20very%20similar%20to%20regular%20mashed%20potatoes,%20except%20that%20it%20has%20a%20slightly%20sweet%20note%20in%20the%20background%20from%20the%20apples%20and%20smokiness%20from%20the%20bacon.%20Y%E2%80%99all%E2%80%A6this%20is%20really%20good.%20Even%20if%20you%20think%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20imagine%20apples%20and%20potatoes%20together,%20please%20try%20this.%20You%E2%80%99ll%20be%20glad%20you%20did.%20Kay%20said%20that%20she%20and%20her%20family%20enjoy%20Hete%20Bliksem%20with%20either%20her%20Dutch%20Meatballs%20(Gehaktballen)%20or%20her%20Stoofvlees.%20The%20recipes%20for%20both%20are%20on%20her%20site%20and%20I%E2%80%99ve%20linked%20to%20them%20for%20easy%20access.%20I%20made%20the%20meatballs%20this%20time,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20definitely%20going%20to%20try%20the%20stoofvlees%20soon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20want%20to%20have%20your%20own%20trans-Atlantic%20culinary%20Hete%20Bliksem%20adventure,%20here%E2%80%99s%20what%20you%20do:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20are%20Kay%E
