%20I%20was%20keeping%20up%20with%20the%20work%20I%20needed%20to%20do,%20but%20I%20was%20wearing%20myself%20out%20more%20quickly%20than%20I%20used%20to%20(and%20that's%20despite%20losing%20about%20125%20pounds%20over%20the%20course%20of%202%20years.)%20It%20just%20seemed%20like%20life%20was%20taking%20a%20toll%20on%20me,%20and%20the%20blog%20was%20just%20the%20first%20thing%20to%20give.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20then,%20early%20in%20May%202014,%20I%20was%20at%20the%20doc's%20for%20a%20scheduled%20cholesterol%20checkup%20when%20I%20told%20him%20about%20a%20fleeting%20chest%20pain%20I'd%20been%20having%20off%20and%20on.%20A%20few%20hours%20later,%20I%20was%20in%20the%20cardiac%20intensive%20care%20unit%20at%20a%20local%20hospital,%20on%20a%20nitro%20drip,%20awaiting%20an%20angiogram.%20On%20May%209th%20I%20had%20a%20quintuple%20bypass%20and%20began%20my%20second%20lease%20on%20life.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20see,%20heart%20disease%20runs%20in%20the%20family.%20My%20father%20died%20when%20he%20was%2058.%20Most%20of%20his%20brothers%20went%20even%20younger.%20Although%20certain%20aspects%20of%20my%20lifestyle%20weren't%20exactly%20cardio-friendly,%20it%20really%20wasn't%20a%20matter%20of%20if%20I%20was%20going%20to%20have%20a%20heart%20attack,%20it%20was%20a%20matter%20of%20when.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EQ.%20Why%20are%20you%20writing%20again?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA.%20After%20the%20surgery%20and%20the%20subsequent%20rehab,%20I%20feel%20a%20lot%20more%20like%20my%20old%20self%20-%20more%20energetic%20and%20inspired%20and%20ready%20to%20giddy%20up%20once%20again.%20And%20because%20I'm%20still%20grocery%20shopping%20and%20noodling%20around%20in%20the%20kitchen%20and%20finding%20strange%20and/or%20wonderful%20things%20out%20in%20the%20markets,%20I%20have%20things%20I%20want%20to%20share.%20So%20here%20I%20am.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHaving%20the%20bypass%20has%20necessitated%20some%20changes%20to%20my%20lifestyle,%20as%20you%20might%20imagine.%20I%20use%20a%20salt%20substitute%20these%20days%20instead%20of%20salt.%20I've%20drastically%20cut%20down%20on%20my%20consumption%20of%20animal%20fats%20and%20in%20some%20cases%20just%20stopped%20eating%20them%20entirely%20(do%20you%20know%20how%20damn%20hard%20it%20is%20to%20not%20eat%20bacon?%20%20Or%20sausage?%20And%20I%20have%20entirely%20given%20up%20butter!%20It's%20killin'%20me!%20Kind%20of.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EQ.%20So%20does%20this%20mean%20you're%20going%20to%20turn%20into%20one%20of%20those%20boring-ass%20health%20freaks%20who%20spend%20all%20their%20time%20bitching%20about%20gluten%20and%20pork%20fat%20and%20holistic%20eating%20and%20all%20that%20crap?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA.%20NO.%20I%20still%20cure%20and%20smoke%20my%20own%20bacon%20and%20bluefish%20and%20other%20meats.%20I%20still%20occasionally%20make%20sausage,%20and%20there%20is%20no%20way%20I'll%20stop%20making%20capicola%20and%20pies%20with%20homemade%20crusts.%20I%20will%20probably%20not%20be%20eating%20too%20many%20blocks%20of%20ramen%20noodles%20any%20more%20-%20did%20you%20know%20that%20a%20package%20of%20ramen%20has%20like%20900+%20mg%20of%20sodium?%20-%20but%20there%20are%20plenty%20of%20other%20cool%20things%20to%20write%20about%20that%20you%20might%20find%20interesting%20even%20if%20you're%20not%20being%20forced%20at%20scalpel-point%20to%20keep%20your%20arteries%20clear.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20thanks%20for%20coming%20back.%20I'll%20try%20to%20make%20it%20worth%20your%20time.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
