Receta Indian Fusion Club Sandwich

Scene from the Big Bang Theory

Sheldon: Well, this sandwich is an unmitigated disaster. I asked for turkey and roast beef with lettuce and swiss on wholewheat.

Raj: What did they give you?

Sheldon: Turkey and roast beef with swiss and lettuce on wholewheat. (Everyone looks at him dismayed!!) He continues..

It’s the right ingredients but in the wrong order!!! In a proper sandwich the cheese is adjacent to the bread to create a moisture barrier against the lettuce. They might as well have dragged this thing through a car wash.

I was never into these sitcoms in my youth. During my college days, "Joey" was "The heartthrob". Every girl was ogling him and whoever I talk to had something or the other to ramble about F.R.I.E.N.D.S. When all my friends were rolling on the floor with laughter, I, could never grasp the wit and humour! Often I would turn and ask "What is funny about this / that ? I got tired and stopped watching it completely. I could never understand their psyched reaction apart from the eyeing of good looking characters!!!

But now, I have to confess, I have quite a few addictions of my own. After few years of being outside my home country, understanding people, their culture, their slang (Esp here in The States) I have finally got the hang of most of it. Or may be I have just grown up as my friends tease. I am able to co-relate, understand the subtexts and the humour. I am enjoying it thoroughly. One such show is the above mentioned Big Bang Theory. And, Sheldon is my sweetheart! After watching the above quoted scene, I am always reminded of him whenever I have a sandwich.

Today's post, a club sandwich usually consists of toasted bread, poultry, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Mayonnaise. Its origin is still debatable and the earliest reference is to that of the chef in Union Club of City Of New York. This recipe has been adapted over the years and now there are so many variations to it. But in today's recipe I have tweaked it to suit a Indian Veg palate. I added paneer in place of the Turkey (chicken is replaced by turkey nowadays) and added a green chutney to complement its falvour. The rest of the ingredients are as such. I have not mentioned the quantity as it is really up to each one's preference. Omit or add any ingredient you dislike / like.

Sheldon, hope I have the ingredients in the right order!!!

Spread Mayo on one side (inside) of two slices. On the other slice, spread green chutney on both sides.

Then layer the paneer filling, cucumbers, tomatoes, Pickles and lettuce. Place the green chutney smeared slice and on top of it fill the same as done previously. Close it with mayo side down and insert a toothpick.

Notes

If you don't have a pickle, add the lime juice. The tanginess highlights the dish. Hot sauce and Ketch up can be used on the side.
