I bet you didn’t know that October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day. One way we can help support healthy bones is incorporating California Dried Plums as a regular part of our diets. California Dried Plums contain vitamins and minerals such as potassium, copper, boron and vitamin K, all of which support healthy bones.
Having healthy bones and preventing osteoporosis is especially important if you’re a woman. Research shows that eating two servings (about 100grams or 10 to 12 dried plums) may improve bone mineral density and slow the rate of bone turnover in post-menopausal women. Bone strength is so crucial for our seniors, because so often it’s something like a broken hip that ends up putting elderly women (and men, too) in hospitals or nursing homes. This happened to both my grandmother and my dad.
New research shows eating half that amount, just slightly more than one serving (about 50 grams or 5 to 6 dried plums), may help maintain bone loss in post-menopausal women. That’s really not all that much since you can put 5 or 6 dried plums and blend them into a smoothie. Another breakfast or healthy snack idea is to chop a serving of dried plum and mix them into your oatmeal. Try them in rice pudding! Or you may like eating a few California Dried Plums as an afternoon snack.
In this video, Shirin Hooshmand, Ph.D., an assistant professor and researcher at San Diego State University, explains that in a study done on post-menopausal women, it was found that eating 100 grams of dried plums per day actually increases bone density. Since post-menopausal women typically lose 1-1.5 percent bone density per year, dried plums are a way to help support healthy bones.
The awesome benefits of California Dried Plums
Having California Dried Plums as a snack is a smart way to help you manage your weight since dried plums can improve satiety perhaps by producing lower glucose and/or appetite-regulating hormone concentrations. Also, one standard serving (about 4 to 5 dried plums) provides 3 grams of fiber, which may also give you a sense of feeling full. Each serving has about 100 calories and contains 293 mg of potassium, 16 mg of magnesium, and more vitamin K than any other fresh or dried fruit.
California Dried Plums can also promote digestive health. We’ve known a long time about the digestive benefits of dried plum’s fiber and potassium. Now they’re finding out that California Dried Plums also contain other bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds that may have general health-promoting benefits in the microflora (or microbiome) of the digestive tract.
It’s no wonder that California Dried Plums are considered The Whole Package! Not only are they a naturally sweet, convenient and nutrient-dense snack that are fun to cook with – check out the recipes on the California Dried Plums culinary website eatdriedpulms.com – but research suggests that California Dried Plums are a nutritional powerhouse, too! Personally, I think they're just delicious!
