Ken + Cook's Chef Malik Fall should be proud of his simple yet artisanal menu with moderate prices and generous portions. This charming eatery is in a space at 19 Kenmare Street that used to be a wise guy "hang" for 70 years; the space still has all the original character that it had when the place was built, including exposed brick and tin ceilings. It's nice the way the whole front wall is open when the weather is warm enough, and it's got the feel of a neighborhood place.

--but%20do%20not%20let%20that%20make%20you%20think%20that%20you%20won't%20be%20blown%20away.%20Chef%20Malik%20seems%20to%20be%20a%20master%20of%20serving%20the%20most%20tender%20meat%20and%20poultry%20in%20town.%20The%20fried%20chicken%20and%20short%20ribs%20were%20easily%20the%20juiciest%20I%20have%20ever%20had.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBurrata%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet's%20start%20with%20the%20appetizers.%20I%20was%20totally%20wowed%20by%20the%20soft%20and%20gooey%20Burrata%20cheese%20($16),%20which%20was%20served%20over%20a%20bed%20of%20organic%20wild%20baby%20greens%20and%20cherry%20tomatoes,%20then%20drizzled%20with%20EVO%20and%20lemon%20juices.%20The%20arugula%20leaves%20were%20as%20super%20tender%20as%20the%20artisanal%20mound%20of%20Burrata%20cheese--I%20have%20to%20say%20that%20the%20key%20to%20the%20success%20of%20this%20simple%20appetizer%20was%20they%20everything%20so%20incredibly%20fresh.%20This%20is%20an%20appetizer%20that%20easily%20works%20for%20two%20people;%20the%20chunk%20of%20Burrata%20weighs%20in%20at%20six%20or%20seven%20ounces%20and%20there%20is%20about%20a%20cup%20of%20greens%20including%20a%20lot%20of%20killer%20baby%20arugula.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeets%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Beets%20($16)%20are%20in%20a%20league%20of%20their%20own.%20This%20appetizer%20is%20actually%20a%20medley%20of%20golden%20and%20red%20beets%20with%20wild%20greens,%20radishes%20and%20cherry%20tomatoes,%20then%20drizzled%20with%20sweet%20and%20sassy%20homemade%20balsamic%20vinaigrette%20and%20pistachios.%20It%20is%20served%20over%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20savory%20homemade%20ricotta%20(about%20%C2%BC%20cup).%20This%20is%20one%20of%20those%20rare%20dishes%20that%20is%20uber-healthy%20but%20tastes%20great%20as%20well!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFried%20Chicken%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20ordered%20my%20two%20main%20dishes,%20I%20decided%20to%20go%20traditional%20and%20throw%20the%20diet%20out%20the%20window,%20so%20I%20went%20for%20the%20Short%20Rib%20($33)%20and%20Chicken%20($19).%20The%20Short%20Rib%E2%80%99s%20well-marinated%20in%20soy%20sauce%20and%20secret%20ingredients%20and%20so%20tender%E2%80%94and%20thankfully%20it%E2%80%99s%20deboned.%20This%20delish%20pile%20of%20pork%20(about%20a%20six%20to%20eight%20ounce%20portion)%20is%20served%20on%20a%20bed%20of%20Fingerling%20Potatoes,%20Creme%20Fraiche%20and%20horseradish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShort%20Ribs%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Chicken%20is%20possibly%20the%20best%20fried%20chicken%20I%20have%20ever%20had%20in%20my%20life%E2%80%94and%20yes,%20the%20menu%20really%20just%20says%20CHICKEN%20on%20it!%20Chef%20Malik%20uses%20a%20simple%20batter%20of%20eggs%20and%20flour%20and%20claims%20nothing%20special%20is%20done%20to%20the%20chicken,%20but%20it%20still%20is%20amazing%20how%20juicy%20it%20is.%20Usually%20frying%20will%20take%20out%20at%20least%20some%20of%20the%20natural%20juices%20of%20a%20bird.%20This%20chicken%20just%20drips%20with%20juice.%20I%20love%20the%20way%20it%20is%20served%20with%20battered%20and%20fried%20lemon%20slices.%20These%20are%20delightful%20even%20though%20many%20mistake%20them%20for%20garnish!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeignets%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20dessert,%20I%20tried%20the%20Beignets%20served%20with%20ricotta,%20blueberry%20and%20lavender%20($9)%E2%80%94the%20fresh%20blueberry%20sauce%20is%20actually%20in%20a%20size%20dish%20for%20dunking,%20and%20the%20tender,%20superhot%20beignets%20have%20delicious%20lemon%20shavings%20on%20them.%20The%20Vanilla%20Cr%C3%A8me%20Brulee%20($9)%20is%20done%20with%20the%20traditional%20French%20cram-based%20recipe%E2%80%94it%20was%20creamy%20and%20just%20a%20little%20crispy%20on%20the%20top.%20The%20pastry%20chef%20thankfully%20does%20not%20get%20too%20heavy%20with%20his%20blowtorch%20like%20a%20lot%20of%20people%20who%20seem%20to%20enjoy%20burning%20the%20top%20of%20a%20great%20cr%C3%A8me%20brulee!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECreme%20Brulee%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20strongly%20recommend%20Ken%20+%20Cook%20just%20because%20it%20does%20not%20disappoint%E2%80%94the%20food%20is%20served%20quickly%20as%20well.%20You%20feel%20at%20home%20right%20away%20in%20the%20dimly%20lit%20old-school%20space%20and%20the%20service%20is%20impeccable.%20For%20those%20who%20love%20Scotch,%20the%20bar%20has%20a%20particularly%20extensive%20list%20of%20brands%20for%20customers%20to%20enjoy.%20They%20will%20accommodate%20customers%20who%20need%20dishes%20done%20a%20certain%20way%20(i.e.%20gluten-free%20or%20vegan).%20Pardon%20the%20play%20on%20words,%20but%20this%20joint%20is%20cookin%E2%80%99!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKen%20+%20Cook%20Restaurant%20&%20Bar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E19%20Kenmare%20Street%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010012%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(212)966-3058%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.kenandcook.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20American%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20photos%20unless%20otherwsie%20noted%20by%20Anne%20Raso%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
