Written by: 7aumsuvai Kadala curry is a popular recipe from Kerala which is usually served along with hot steaming puttu, papadam and banana. You may also serve with idli,dosa and even rice. Ingredients: Serves 4 to 5 1/2 cup – Black chickpeas/Kala chana/Karuppu Kondakadalai 1 no’s – Onion (sliced) 1 no – Tomato 1 no – Green chillies 1 tsp – Coconut oil Salt to taste For grinding: 1 tsp – Coconut Oil 1/2 no – Onion (sliced) 2 clove – Garlic 1/2 inch – Ginger 1/2 cup – Coconut grated 1 small – Cinnamon 1 no – Cardamom 2 no’s – Clove 1/2 tsp – Fennel seeds / Sombu 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder 1 1/2 tsp – Red chilli powder 2 tsp – Coriander powder 1/4 tsp – Garam masala powder For seasoning: 1 tsp – Coconut oil 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds 1 no – Dry red chillies 1/4 cup – Onion (Chopped finely) Fresh curry leaves Preparation method: Soak 1/2 cup of black chana/kala chana for 4 to 6 hr, pressure cook in enough water along with salt for 3 to 4 whistles or until well done. Heat oil in a pan, add the items given in the list “for grinding” and roast until the raw smell of masala powder goes. Allow them to cool completely and grind it to fine paste. Set this aside. Heat oil in a pan, add sliced onion, green chillies and tomato along with salt, saute until they are mushy. Followed by freshly ground masala paste, saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Add Cooked kala chana, along with required water (approx. 1 to 1 1/2 cup) and salt, bring it to boil and continue to cook for 5 to 10 minutes or until you reached the desired consistency. Finally season it with mustard seeds, chopped onion, dry red chili and fresh curry leaves in coconut oil. Pour this seasonings over the curry and switch off the stove. Serve with steaming puttu or even with hot rice. Notes: You may increase or decrease the quantity of red chilli powder as per your spice level.
