%20moved%20to%20Milwaukee%20several%20summers%20ago%20and%20both%20of%20us%20being%20city%20girls%20thought%20that%20the%20idea%20of%20a%20state%20fair%20sounded%20like%20one%20of%20the%20most%20fun%20things%20ever%20in%20life.%20%20We%E2%80%99d%20never%20been%20to%20one,%20and%20the%20fact%20that%20Wisconsin%E2%80%99s%20fair%20is%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20Milwaukee%20made%20our%20little%20city%20hearts%20happy,%20because%20we%E2%80%99d%20get%20to%20experience%20this%20decidedly%20un-urban%20thing%20without%20getting%20too%20far%20out%20of%20our%20comfort%20zone.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20haven%E2%80%99t%20ever%20been%20to%20a%20state%20fair,%20I%20really%20suggest%20you%20find%20out%20where%20yours%20is%20taking%20place%20this%20year%20and%20head%20on%20out,%20because,%20honestly?%20Best%20thing%20ever.%20%20Besides%20the%20rides,%20games%20and%20odd%20mix%20of%20mullets%20and%20leather%20jackets,%20the%20amount%20of%20food%20that%20is%20available%20is%20astonishing.%20%20Corn%20dogs,%20cotton%20candy,%20fresh%20milk,%20cream%20puffs,%20every%20flavor%20of%20beer%20imaginable,%20cheese%20curds,%20elephant%20ears,%20candy%20apples%E2%80%A6%20And%20that%E2%80%99s%20just%20at%20the%20entrance.%20%20Once%20you%20get%20into%20the%20fair,%20there%20are%20entire%20pavilions%20dedicated%20to%20food%20and%20drinks%20and%20things%20that%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20know%20you%20could%20eat%20(crocodile,%20anyone?).%20%20What%20really%20gets%20me%20is%20that%20each%20fair%20is%20a%20total%20love%20fest%20for%20the%20state%20(I%20recognize%20that%20is%20a%20completely%20obvious%20statement,%20but%20until%20you%E2%80%99ve%20seen%20an%20entire%20barn%20the%20size%20of%20a%20two%20football%20fields%20dedicated%20to%20Wisconsin%20dairy%20products%E2%80%93including%203%20different%20grilled%20cheese%20stations%E2%80%93you%20really%20don%E2%80%99t%20get%20it).%20%20I%20hear%20that%20Iowa%20has%20a%20huge%20cow%20made%20out%20of%20butter%20for%20the%20love%20of%20all%20things%20good!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20kettle%20corn%20is%20the%20most%20tame%20of%20anything%20you%E2%80%99ll%20find%20at%20the%20fair,%20and%20to%20be%20honest,%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20that%20it%20even%20made%20my%20list%20of%20things%20to%20taste,%20but%20when%20I%20buy%20it%20in%20the%20store%20(at%20an%20outrageous%20$5%20a%20bag.%20Seriously??),%20reference%20is%20always%20made%20to%20how%20it%E2%80%99s%20the%20ultimate%20in%20state%20fair%20fare.%20%20Since%20I%20grew%20up%20in%20the%20era%20of%20Jiffy%20Pop,%20I%E2%80%99d%20never%20actually%20made%20popcorn%20on%20the%20stove%20with%20loose%20kernels.%20%20That,%20and%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20was%20always%20afraid%20that%20a%20stray%20kernel%20would%20take%20an%20eye%20out.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20I%20was%20staring%20at%20a%20bag%20of%20yellow%20kernels%20the%20other%20day%20(ok,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20admit%20I%20was%20debating%20the%20merits%20of%20having%20popcorn%20for%20dinner.%20%20High%20in%20fiber!%20Low%20calorie!)%20and%20I%20thought%20it%E2%80%99d%20be%20good%20to%20be%20able%20to%20make%20my%20own%20kettle%20corn%20for%20those%20times%20when%20it%E2%80%99s%20late%20at%20night%20and%20I%E2%80%99m%20on%20a%20sweet/savory%20merry-go-round.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELucky%20for%20me,%20it%E2%80%99s%20super%20easy%20and%20although%20I%20did%20fear%20losing%20an%20eye%20at%20one%20point,%20all%20turned%20out%20well%20in%20the%20end.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99d%20add%20a%20bit%20more%20salt%20to%20really%20get%20the%20salty-sweet%20combo,%20but%20it%20hit%20the%20spot.%20%20And%20the%20next%20day%20my%20kitchen%20smelled%20like%20caramel.%20%20Of%20course,%20this%20is%20no%20substitute%20for%20the%20real%20deal%20as%20we%20watch%20a%20hog%20calling%20contest.%20%20Who%E2%80%99s%20in?%20Illinois%20State%20Fair%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20pot%20with%20a%20tight-fitting%20lid,%20heat%20the%20oil%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20%20Add%20the%20popcorn.%20When%20the%20oils%20sizzles,%20sprinkle%20the%20sugar%20over%20the%20kernels.%20Cover%20and%20shake%20the%20pan%20until%20the%20popping%20slows%20down,%20about%203%20minutes.%20Remove%20from%20the%20heat%20and%20toss%20with%20the%20salt.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
