%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20was%20a%20much%20younger%20(ahem)%20woman%20I%20was%20lucky%20enough%20to%20live%20in%20the%20foothills%20of%20the%20Canadian%20Rocky%20Mountains%20of%20Alberta%20for%20a%20time%20.%20.%20.%20while%20there%20I%20used%20to%20ubdulge%20myself%20in%20these%20lovely%20sweet%20pastries%20that%20were%20sold%20in%20most%20of%20the%20bakeshops%20.%20.%20.%20filled%20with%20a%20sweet%20and%20scrummy%20poppy%20seed%20filling%20.%20.%20.%20no%20doubt%20a%20tasty%20treat%20come%20down%20from%20the%20traditions%20of%20Eastern%20European%20settlers%20that%20filled%20the%20Canadian%20West%20.%20.%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20my%20.%20.%20.%20but%20they%20were%20soooo%20delicious%20.%20.%20.%20I%20could%20never%20quite%20get%20enough%20of%20them%20.%20.%20.%20the%20pastry%20all%20buttery%20and%20the%20filling%20so%20sweet%20and%20yet%20crunchy%20at%20the%20same%20time,%20with%20a%20distinct%20almond%20flavour%20and%20a%20lucious%20glaze%20gilding%20all%20of%20that%20goodness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20were%20so%20good%20that%20some%2030%20years%20later%20I%20am%20still%20thinking%20about%20them%20.%20.%20.%20or%20is%20that%20just%20the%20power%20of%20a%20rose%20coloured%20food%20memory%20clouding%20my%20culinary%20vision%20.%20.%20.%20I%20am%20not%20sure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20only%20know%20for%20sure,%20that%20I%20do%20have%20a%20special%20fondness%20for%20Poppy%20Seeds%20that%20goes%20way%20back.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20make%20quite%20a%20lovely%20showing%20in%20these%20delicious%20breakfast%20or%20teatime%20muffins%20.%20.%20.%20the%20muffins%20all%20buttery%20and%20sweetly%20moist%20.%20.%20.%20and%20at%20the%20same%20time%20tangy%20with%20lemon,%20both%20in%20flavour%20and%20the%20scent%20.%20.%20and%20then%20with%20those%20pretty%20blue%20seeds%20scattered%20throughout%20.%20.%20.%20a%20feast%20for%20all%20the%20senses%20.%20.%20.%20and%20lets%20not%20forget%20that%20lemon%20sugar%20crunch%20topping!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20go%20down%20a%20right%20treat%20with%20your%20morning%20cuppa!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*Lemon%20and%20Poppy%20Seed%20Muffins*%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20one%20dozen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELight%20and%20sweetly%20tangy%20and%20filled%20with%20lots%20of%20poppyseed%20crunch,%20and%20a%20scrummy%20lemon%20sugar%20topping!!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20200*C/400*F/%20gas%20mark%206.%20Butter%20a%2012%20cup%20muffin%20cup%20pan%20really%20well.%20Set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20sugar%20and%20lemon%20zest%20into%20a%20large%20bowl.%20Rub%20the%20two%20together%20with%20your%20fingertips%20really%20well.%20(This%20smells%20great!)%20Remove%203%20TBS%20of%20the%20mixture%20and%20set%20aside.%20Sift%20the%20flour%20into%20the%20remainder.%20Stir%20in%20the%20poppy%20seeds.%20Whisk%20together%20the%20lemon%20juice,%20milk,%20beaten%20eggs%20and%20melted%20butter.%20Make%20a%20well%20in%20the%20centre%20of%20the%20dry%20ingredients%20and%20add%20the%20liquid%20all%20at%20once.%20Stir%20together%20only%20to%20combine.%20Spoon%20into%20the%20prepared%20muffin%20cups,%20dividing%20it%20equally.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESprinkle%20the%20tops%20of%20each%20with%20the%20reserved%20lemon%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20for%2020%20to%2025%20minutes,%20until%20well%20risen%20and%20a%20toothpick%20inserted%20in%20the%20centre%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Allow%20to%20cool%20in%20the%20pan%20for%20ten%20minutes%20before%20removing%20to%20a%20wire%20rack%20to%20finish%20cooling.%20Serve%20warm%20or%20at%20room%20temperature.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
