When I was in Middle School (long, long ago...) my mother owned a German Delicatessen. She leased her storefront space from a sweet Italian man who decided to close his ice cream shop. He kept the back part of the rental space, where he continued to make ice cream which he would wholesale. Once in a while, Cecil would let me have a taste of his freshly made ice cream. I can remember the first time I tasted his Lemon Custard Ice Cream. I loved that flavor above all else. One day, Cecil retired his ice cream making business and I could never find that flavor again. %20my%20mother%20owned%20a%20German%20Delicatessen.%20She%20leased%20her%20storefront%20space%20from%20a%20sweet%20%20Italian%20man%20who%20decided%20to%20close%20his%20ice%20cream%20shop.%20%20He%20kept%20the%20back%20part%20of%20the%20rental%20space,%20where%20he%20continued%20to%20make%20ice%20cream%20which%20he%20would%20wholesale.%20%20Once%20in%20a%20while,%20Cecil%20would%20let%20me%20have%20a%20taste%20of%20his%20freshly%20made%20ice%20cream.%20%20I%20can%20remember%20the%20first%20time%20I%20tasted%20his%20Lemon%20Custard%20Ice%20Cream.%20%20I%20loved%20that%20flavor%20above%20all%20else.%20One%20day,%20Cecil%20retired%20his%20ice%20cream%20making%20business%20and%20I%20could%20never%20find%20that%20flavor%20again.%20Until%20today,%20that%20is.%20%20Last%20summer,%20I%20developed%20my%20own%20version%20of%20an%20Ice%20Cream%20Custard.%20%20I've%20made%20ice%20cream%20before,%20but%20I%20had%20never%20made%20the%20effort%20to%20cook%20eggs,%20milk,%20cream%20and%20sugar%20to%20make%20the%20base%20for%20ice%20cream.%20%20I%20loved%20the%20creamy%20texture%20of%20%20Strawberry%20Custard%20Ice%20Cream%20%20that%20I%20made.%20%20If%20you've%20never%20made%20ice%20cream--%20or%20if%20you%20have%20made%20ice%20cream%20without%20eggs%20in%20it--%20strap%20yourself%20in.%20I'm%20taking%20you%20for%20a%20ride%20that%20I%20hope%20you%20will%20enjoy.%20%20I'm%20going%20to%20show%20you%20my%20unorthodox%20way%20that%20I%20make%20egg%20custard.%20I%20take%20a%20few%20shortcuts%20and%20I've%20never%20had%20a%20problem.%20%20Ready?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20make%20the%20egg%20custard,%20you%20simply%20whisk%204%20egg%20yolks,%20sugar%20and%20vanilla%20until%20the%20sugar%20is%20dissolved.%20%20Most%20recipes%20say%20to%20use%20a%20double-boiled%20to%20heat%20a%20combination%20of%20whole%20milk%20(or%20half%20and%20half)%20and%20heavy%20cream.%20Me?%20I%20microwave%20it%20for%20about%202%20minutes.%20%20You%20just%20don't%20want%20the%20milk/cream%20to%20boil.%20%20Sloooooooooooowly%20add%20a%20little%20hot%20cream%20into%20the%20egg%20mixture,%20to%20temper%20it.%20%20Whisking%20constantly,%20add%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20hot%20cream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20again,%20the%20recipes%20say%20to%20pour%20the%20egg%20and%20cream%20mixture%20into%20a%20double%20boiler%20and%20to%20cook%20until%20thick.%20%20I%20don't.%20%20I%20pour%20mine%20into%20a%20sauce%20pan%20and%20cook%20it%20on%20direct%20heat.%20%20The%20key%20is%20to%20stick%20nearby,%20to%20keep%20stirring%20the%20mixture%20on%20medium-low%20heat%20until%20the%20mixture%20thickens.%20%20It%20takes%20between%2012-15%20minutes;%20the%20mixture%20should%20coat%20the%20back%20of%20a%20spoon.%20%20I%20pour%20the%20mixture%20into%20a%20metal%20bowl,%20cover%20it%20with%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20let%20it%20chill%20overnight.%20%20%20This%20morning,%20I%20pondered%20on%20how%20I%20could%20achieve%20a%20clean%20but%20very%20present%20lemon%20flavor.%20Fresh%20lemon%20juice?%20How%20much?%20%20Lemon%20zest?%20Lemon%20vodka?%20%20Then,%20it%20hit%20me!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20Christmas,%20I%20had%20been%20given%20a%20jar%20of%20homemade%20lemon%20curd.%20%20It%20had%20been%20water-canned,%20but%20I%20still%20kept%20it%20in%20my%20fridge.%20%20It%20was%20delicious%20(thanks,%20Stef)%20with%20just%20the%20right%20balance%20of%20lemon--%20a%20little%20tart,%20a%20little%20sweet.%20%20I%20added%20the%20jar%20(8%20oz)%20and%20whisked%20it%20into%20the%20chilled%20custard.%20%20I%20took%20a%20taste,%20and%20that%20was%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENOTE:%20If%20you%20live%20near%20a%20Trader%20Joe's,%20they%20sell%20a%20tasty%20lemon%20curd%20for%20a%20few%20bucks.%20Or,%20you%20can%20see%20how%20I%20make%20my%20own%20lemon%20curd--%20which%20is%20very%20easy%20to%20do,%20by%20clicking%20here.%20Please%20tell%20me%20that%20you%20that%20you%20own%20an%20ice%20cream%20maker!%20%20I%20bought%20a%20very%20inexpensive%20Hamilton%20Beach%20Ice%20Cream%20Maker%20for%20about%20$15.00.%20%20It%20does%20a%20great%20job,%20and%20I%20always%20keep%20it%20in%20my%20freezer.%20All%20you%20need%20to%20do%20is%20turn%20on%20the%20machine,%20pour%20the%20mixture%20in%20and%20sit%20back%20for%2015-20%20minutes.%20You%20can%20hear%20the%20churning%20slow%20down,%20and%20the%20ice%20cream%20is%20ready!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20pouring%20the%20ice%20cream%20into%20a%20container,%20this%20went%20into%20the%20freezer%20for%20a%20few%20hours.%20I%20enjoyed%20what%20was%20left%20on%20the%20spatula...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20my...%20this%20is%20good!%20The%20lemon%20flavor%20reminds%20of%20Cecil%20Bindel's%20ice%20cream,%20back%20in%20the%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVERDICT:%20I'm%20telling%20you%20the%20truth...%20I%20scooped%20the%20frozen%20ice%20cream%20just%20to%20photograph%20it%20(before%20the%20sun%20went%20down).%20%20This%20freezes%20solid,%20but%20not%20rock%20solid.%20I%20tasted%20one%20spoonful,%20only.%20%20%20Wow,%20it's%20so%20creamy,%20and%20the%20lemon%20flavor%20is%20spot%20on.%20In%20fact,%20I%20am%20practicing%20restrain
