,%20Spring%20means%20it's%20time%20to%20grab%20your%20tools%20and%20start%20playing%20in%20the%20garden.%20I've%20been%20yearning%20for%20one%20of%20my%20own%20ever%20since%20I%20got%20into%20raw%20in%202001,%20but%20the%20circumstances%20were%20never%20quite%20right:%20the%20soil%20wasn't%20very%20fertile,%20not%20enough%20sun,%20or%20the%20time/energy%20just%20plain%20wasn't%20there.%20This%20is%20the%20first%20time%20I'm%20being%20presented%20with%20an%20earnest%20opportunity%20to%20garden;%20there's%20lots%20of%20beds%20already%20in%20place,%20an%20amazing%20southern%20exposure,%20and%20our%20landlord%20Nicolo%20has%20pretty%20much%20given%20me%20the%20green%20light%20to%20plant%20whatever%20I%20want.%20Hee-hah%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere's%20only%20one%20hitch...%20We%20don't%20know%20how%20long%20we'll%20be%20able%20to%20stay%20here!%20Ah%20well,%20that%20still%20didn't%20stop%20me%20from%20planting%20a%20few%20things%20anyways;%20mostly%20greens%20(lettuce,%20mesclun,%20spinach,%20arugula,%20chard%20and%20kale)%20and%20some%20peas.%20There%20were%20a%20bunch%20of%20lettuces%20already%20happening%20in%20one%20of%20the%20beds%20(along%20with%20tons%20of%20weeds)%20so%20Don%20and%20I%20uprooted%20the%20whole%20thing%20one%20afternoon%20and%20replanted%20the%20good%20stuff.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EComing%20along,%20coming%20along...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20picked%20up%20a%20few%20cherry%20tomatoes,%20basil%20and%20zucchini%20plants%20at%20the%20farmer's%20market,%20which%20we%20replanted%20into%20bigger%20pots.%20I've%20been%20waiting%20for%20the%20temperature%20to%20warm%20up%20a%20little%20before%20putting%20them%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESee%20the%20teeny%20zucchini%20growing%20on%20this%20one?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%2012%20years%20that%20Nicolo's%20had%20the%20property,%20he%20has%20planted%20lots%20of%20fruit%20trees;%20mostly%20apple,%20but%20also%20pear%20and%20even%20kiwi!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere's%20several%20varieties%20of%20berries,%20and%20medicinal%20plants%20and%20herbs%20growing%20around:%20comfrey,%20mint,%20thyme,%20oregano,%20rosemary,%20chives,%20dill,%202%20types%20of%20parsley,%20mullein,%20nettle,%20and%20many%20more%20which%20I%20don't%20know%20the%20names%20of.%20Some%20parsley%20seeds%20have%20actually%20traveled%20all%20the%20way%20next%20to%20the%20porch,%20so%20I%20just%20have%20to%20walk%20out%20the%20door%20to%20pick%20fresh%20parsley!%20(If%20you%20look%20closely,%20you%20can%20sorta%20see%20it%20to%20the%20left%20in%20the%20zucchini%20picture%20above.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20there's%20of%20course%20plenty%20of%20lovage!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20remember%20seeing%20it%20listed%20as%20one%20of%20the%20ingredients%20in%20herbal%20seasonings,%20but%20had%20never%20actually%20tried%20it%20on%20its%20own.%20It%20has%20a%20flavor%20very%20reminiscent%20of%20celery%20and%20the%20best%20part%20is%20that%20it's%20perennial%20and%20grows%20like%20weed!%20Someone%20who%20uses%20it%20a%20lot%20told%20me%20that%20it%20can%20be%20frozen%20in%20ziplock%20bags%20to%20be%20used%20all%20winter%20long,%20as%20with%20most%20herbs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20two%20gigantic%20lovage%20bushes%20on%20the%20land.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20here's%20a%20close%20up%20so%20you%20can%20see%20what%20it%20looks%20like.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20haven't%20had%20a%20chance%20to%20experiment%20much%20with%20lovage%20yet,%20but%20have%20been%20enjoying%20it%20lately%20in%20this%20delicious%20variation%20of%20one%20of%20my%20all%20time%20favorite%20soups.%20Absolutely%20lovely!%20(No%20pun%20intended,%20of%20course!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECreamy%20Zucchini%20and%20Lovage%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%202%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlend%20all%20ingredients%20until%20smooth%20and%20creamy%20in%20high-speed%20blender.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20topped%20with%20freshly%20ground%20black%20pepper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECarmella's%20Notes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E~%20Don%20and%20I%20don't%20like%20cold%20soups%20so%20we%20used%20to%20warm%20them%20up%20gently%20on%20the%20stove,%20stirring%20constantly%20until%20lukewarm.%20However,%20since%20our%20days%20at%20Ashinah%20where%20there%20was%20no%20stove,%20we've%20taken%20to%20using%20hot%20water%20instead.%20It%20requires%20a%20bit%20of%20getting%20used%20to%20(I%20sometimes%20need%20to%20add%20a%20bit%20of%20cold%20water%20as%20well)%20as%20you%20don't%20want%20to%20cook%20those%20precious%20enzymes,%20but%20once%20you%20get%20the%20hang%20of%20it,%20it's%20so%20much%20quicker!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E~%20Dunno%20if%20I've%20mentioned%20it%20before,%20but%20as%20a%20rule,%20we%20prefer%20to%20add%20dried%20seaweed%20to%20our%20soup%20bowls%20at%20the%20end,%20rather%20than%20use%20salt.%20That's%20what's%20sorta%20peaking%20through%20the%20crushed%20pepper%20in%20the%20photos.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoy!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
