Receta Mango (Aam) Dal
This is a popular dish made during Summer when mangoes are available in plenty.
Ingredients:
- Moong Dal – 1/2 cup
- Mango – 1, medium, finely chopped
- Green Chillies – 3, slit
- Oil/Ghee – 1 tblsp
- Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
- Garlic – 2 cloves, crushed (optional)
- Curry Leaves – 2 sprigs
- Grind to Paste:
- Coconut – 2 to 3 tblsp, grated
- Ginger – 1/2 inch piece
- Coriander Leaves – 1 tblsp, chopped
- For Seasoning:
- Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Seeds – 1/4 tsp
Red Chilli – 1, broken
Asafoetida – a pinch
Method:
1. Boil dal with sufficient water and turmeric powder.
2. When half done, add mango pieces and green chillies.
3. Simmer till dal is cooked.
4. Heat oil, add seasonings and, when done, add curry leaves and garlic.
5. Fry till browned.
6. Add ground paste, stir fry till oil surfaces.
7. Add cooked dal and mangoes.
8. Cook for for 1 to 2 minutes more.
9. Serve with rice or rotis.
Note: In some places, the ground paste is not used. So if you want, you can omit that.
