,%20set%20in%201961,%20of%20Walt%20Disney%20persuading%20P.L.%20Travers%20to%20allow%20Disney%20to%20make%20the%20Mary%20Poppins%20movie.%20%20I%20enjoyed%20it%20thoroughly%20for%20all%20sorts%20of%20reasons,%20including%20the%20insight%20into%20the%20early%20life%20of%20P.L.%20Travers,%20how%20the%20Mary%20Poppins%20stories%20came%20about,%20and%20why%20the%20movie%20is%20titled%20as%20it%20is.%20%20I%20got%20a%20buzz%20of%20excitement%20near%20the%20start%20of%20the%20movie%20to%20see%20the%20names%20of%20many%20places%20that%20I%20have%20been%20to%20in%20Queensland%20appearing%20on%20a%20train%20timetable,%20including%20the%20name%20of%20my%20home%20town.%20%20It's%20not%20often%20that%20you'd%20see%20that%20in%20a%20Hollywood%20movie!%20%20I%20also%20loved%20watching%20the%20very%20fine%20acting%20by%20both%20the%20well%20known%20actors%20and%20Annie%20Rose%20Buckley,%20who%20played%20P.L.%20Travers%20as%20a%20girl.%20%20We%20learn%20some%20curious%20tidbits%20throughout%20the%20film,%20including%20that%20P.L.%20Travers%20had%20an%20aversion%20to%20pears%20and%20the%20colour%20red.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20interesting%20how%20P.L.%20Travers,%20like%20another%20famous%20Queenslander%20born%20the%20same%20year,%20Florence%20Broadhurst,%20reinvented%20herself%20and%20her%20past%20so%20that%20those%20not%20in%20the%20know%20would%20never%20suspect%20her%20real%20origins.%20%20Like%20Florence,%20P.L.%20Travers%20appears%20not%20to%20have%20been%20the%20most%20genial%20of%20personalities,%20and%20even%20the%20very%20powerful%20Walt%20Disney%20had%20a%20difficult%20time%20persuading%20Mrs%20Travers,%20as%20she%20preferred%20to%20be%20known,%20to%20give%20him%20the%20film%20rights%20to%20Mary%20Poppins.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBack%20to%20the%20more%20mundane%20world%20of%20my%20kitchen.%20%20I%20had%20a%20loaf%20of%20Vienna%20bread%20that%20was%20taking%20up%20valuable%20real%20estate%20in%20my%20tiny%20freezer,%20so%20I%20decided%20to%20make%20it%20into%20bread%20and%20butter%20pudding%20to%20reclaim%20the%20space.%20%20I%20chose%20Donna%20Hay's%20Marmalade%20Bread%20and%20Butter%20Pudding%20from%20p146%20of%20Modern%20Classics%20II,%20which%20is%20not%20the%20same%20as%20the%20online%20version%20on%20Donna's%20website.%20%20It%20uses%20milk,%20not%20cream,%20more%20bread%20and%20no%20currants.%20%20The%20end%20result%20is%20quite%20pleasing%20-%20here's%20a%20peek%20inside:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn't%20remove%20the%20crusts%20from%20the%20bread,%20although%20the%20recipe%20calls%20for%20it.%20%20I%20thought%20the%20crusts%20added%20some%20texture%20and%20crunch.%20%20The%20custard%20is%20light%20and%20binds%20the%20bread%20together%20well%20enough%20that%20I%20could%20cut%20the%20pudding%20into%20squares%20for%20transport%20afterwards.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20make%20this%20pudding%20you%20will%20need:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20your%20oven%20to%20160%20degrees%20Celsius%20(I%20used%20180%20degrees).%20%20Spread%205%20slices%20of%20bread%20with%20butter%20and%205%20slices%20with%20marmalade,%20and%20create%20sandwiches%20with%20one%20slice%20each%20of%20buttered%20bread%20and%20jammy%20bread.%20%20cut%20the%20sandwiches%20into%20three,%20then%20layer%20them%20in%20a%204%20cup%20oven%20proof%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20milk,%20eggs,%20vanilla%20and%20sugar%20into%20a%20bowl%20and%20whisk%20to%20combine.%20%20Pour%20this%20mixture%20over%20the%20bread%20and%20let%20it%20stand%20for%203%20minutes.%20%20Sprinkle%20extra%20sugar%20on%20top%20of%20the%20pudding.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20pudding%20into%20a%20baking%20tray,%20and%20fill%20the%20tray%20with%20hot%20water%20until%20it%20comes%20half%20way%20up%20the%20sides%20of%20the%20pudding%20dish.%20%20Place%20the%20pudding%20in%20the%20baking%20tray%20into%20the%20preheated%20oven%20and%20bake%20for%20one%20hour%20and%20five%20minutes.%20%20Remove%20the%20baked%20pudding%20from%20the%20oven,%20remove%20it%20from%20the%20baking%20tray,%20and%20allow%20it%20to%20cool%20for%205%20minutes%20before%20serving%20warm%20-%20alone%20or%20with%20cream%20or%20icecream.%20%20I%20chilled%20it%20and%20cut%20it%20into%20slices%20for%20sharing.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
