.%20%20She%20writes%20a%20weekly%20newsletter%20about%20her%20personal%20travel%20notes,%20recipes,%20and%20personal%20advice.%20%20Now,%20I%20don't%20typically%20get%20caught%20up%20in%20celebrity%20lifestyles,%20but%20Gwyneth%20is,%20in%20my%20opinion,%20such%20a%20beautiful%20person%20who%20lives%20her%20life%20in%20an%20admirable%20way.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20reading%20one%20of%20her%20past%20newsletters%20where%20she%20talks%20about%20Meat%20Free%20Mondays%20(the%20UK's%20version%20of%20MeatlessMondays.com).%20%20She%20cites%20a%20letter%20from%20Paul%20McCartney%20himself%20detailing%20the%20pull%20for%20Mondays%20void%20of%20meat.%20%20Read%20his%20letter%20below,%20and%20check%20out%20GOOP%20for%20a%20good%20read%20on%20wholistic%20living.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E--Ok,%20here%E2%80%99s%20the%20story%20on%20Meat%20Free%20Monday.%20In%202006,%20the%20United%20Nations%20issued%20a%20report%20which%20stated%20that%20the%20livestock%20industry%20as%20a%20whole%20was%20responsible%20for%20more%20greenhouse%20gas%20emissions%20than%20the%20whole%20of%20the%20transport%20sector%20put%20together.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20found%20this%20interesting%20particularly%20because%20people%20at%20the%20UN%20are%20not%20a%20vegetarian%20society%20and%20therefore,%20could%20not%20be%20accused%20of%20bias.%20They%20pointed%20out%20the%20following%20facts:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20The%20Livestock%20industry%20produces%20gases%20that%20are%20extremely%20dangerous%20for%20the%20future%20of%20our%20environment.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20The%20two%20main%20gases,%20methane%20and%20nitrous%20oxide,%20are%20considered%20to%20be%20more%20harmful%20than%20CO2%20(methane%20is%2021%20times%20more%20powerful%20than%20CO2%20and%20nitrous%20oxide%20is%20310%20times%20more%20powerful%20than%20CO2)%20so%20the%20data%20suggests%20that%20this%20is%20causing%20a%20highly%20dangerous%20situation%20for%20ourselves%20and,%20more%20importantly,%20for%20future%20generations.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20Methane%20also%20remains%20in%20the%20atmosphere%20for%209%20to%2015%20years;%20nitrous%20oxide%20remains%20in%20the%20atmosphere%20for%20114%20years,%20on%20average,%20and%20is%20296%20times%20more%20potent%20than%20CO2%20-%20the%20gases%20released%20today%20will%20continue%20to%20be%20active%20in%20degrading%20the%20climate%20decades%20from%20now.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20Livestock%20production%20is%20land%20intensive:%20a%20recent%20report%20by%20Greenpeace%20on%20land%20use%20in%20the%20largest%20meat%20producing%20state%20in%20Brazil%20found%20that%20livestock%20(cattle)%20production%20was%20responsible%20for%20vastly%20more%20deforestation%20than%20soya.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20A%20third%20of%20all%20cereal%20crops,%20and%20well%20over%2090%25%20of%20soya,%20goes%20into%20animal%20feed,%20not%20food%20for%20humans.%20Eating%20less%20meat%20will%20free%20up%20a%20lot%20of%20agricultural%20land%20which%20can%20revert%20to%20growing%20trees%20and%20other%20vegetation,%20which,%20in%20turn,%20will%20absorb%20more%20carbon%20dioxide%20from%20the%20atmosphere.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20Livestock%20production%20is%20water%20intensive:%20it%20accounts%20for%20around%208%25%20of%20global%20human%20water%20use.%20The%20estimated%20634%20gallons%20of%20fresh%20water%20required%20to%20produce%20one%205.2%20ounce%20(150g)%20beef%20burger%20would%20be%20enough%20for%20a%20four-hour%20shower.%20For%20comparison,%20the%20same%20quantity%20of%20tofu%20requires%20143%20gallons%20of%20water%20to%20produce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20Livestock%20production%20is%20the%20largest%20source%20of%20water%20pollutants,%20principally%20animal%20wastes,%20antibiotics,%20hormones,%20chemicals%20from%20tanneries,%20fertilizers%20and%20pesticides%20used%20for%20feed%20crops,%20and%20sediments%20from%20eroded%20pastures.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20The%20meat%20industry%20is%20set%20to%20double%20its%20production%20by%202050%20so%20even%20if%20they%20manage%20to%20lower%20emissions%20by%2050%25,%20as%20they%20have%20promised%20to,%20we%20will%20still%20be%20in%20the%20same%20position.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWith%20this%20in%20mind,%20my%20family%20and%20I%20launched%20Meat%20Free%20Monday%20in%20the%20UK,%20an%20idea%20which%20has%20been%20gaining%20support%20from%20people%20like%20Tom%20Parker-Bowles%20who,%20after%20a%20lifetime%20of%20denigrating%20vegetarians,%20recently%20wrote%20in%20his%20Daily%20Mail%20column,%20%E2%80%9CI%20wince%20at%20the%20memory%20of%20my%20boorish%20antics%E2%80%9D%20and%20who%20pronounced%20himself%20%E2%80%9Cintrigued%E2%80%9D%20by%20MFM:%20%E2%80%9CThere%E2%80%99s%20no%20doubting%20the%20plain%20common%20sense%20of%20the%20message%E2%80%A6Meat%20Free%20Monday%20is%20something%20to%20really%20savour%E2%80%9D.%20Another%20supporter%20is%20Al%20Gore%20who%20stated%20that%20initiatives%20like%20Meat%20Free%20Monday%20%E2%80%9Crepresent%20a%20responsible%20and%20welcome%20component%20of%20a%20comprehensive%20strategy%20for%20reducing%20global%20warming%20pollution%20and%20simultaneously%20improving%20human%20health.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEven%20a%20number%20of%20schools%20have%20already%20done%20this%20in%20the%20UK%20with%20great%20success.%20The%20town%20of%20Ghent%20in%20Belgium%20has%20a%20meat%20free%20day%20and,%20amazingly,%20Sao%20Paulo%20has%20one%20even%20though%20Brazil%20is%20a%20large%20exporter%20of%20meat.%20In%20Sweden,%20the%20government%20is%20now%20labeling%20food%20to%20give%20the%20consumer%20the%20opportunity%20to%20understand%20the%20dangers%20of%20indiscriminate%20food%20consumption%20and%20there%20are%20many%20more%20examples%20appearing%20online.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20point%20is%20that%20so%20many%20people%20these%20days%20are%20looking%20for%20ways%20to%20%E2%80%9Cdo%20their%20bit%E2%80%9D%20for%20the%20environment.%20We%20recycle%20-%20something%20we%20never%20would%20have%20dreamt%20of%20doing%20in%20the%20past.%20Many%20people%20now%20drive%20hybrid%20cars%20but%20most%20people%20understand%20that%20we%20cannot%20leave%20this%20important%20issue%20to%20the%20politicians%20of%20the%20world.%20Recently,%20at%20the%20Copenhagen%20Conference%20for%20Climate%20Change,%20this%20issue%20was%20not%20even%20on%20the%20agenda%20and%20so%20I%20believe%20it%20is%20once%20again%20left%20to%20us,%20the%20people,%20to%20do%20it%20ourselves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20amazingly%20easy%20to%20take%20one%20day%20in%20your%20week,%20Monday%20or%20any%20other%20day,%20and%20not%20eat%20meat.%20When%20you%20think%20about%20it,%20there%20are%20so%20many%20great%20alternatives,%20for%20instance,%20in%20Italian%20cooking,%20so%20many%20of%20the%20dishes%20are%20vegetarian%20already%20and%20Thai%20and%20Chinese%20cuisine%20are%20the%20same.%20All%20it%20means%20is%20that%20you%20have%20to%20think%20a%20bit%20about%20what%20you%E2%80%99ll%20eat%20that%20day%20but,%20in%20actual%20fact,%20far%20from%20being%20a%20chore,%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20fun%20challenge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHaving%20been%20a%20vegetarian%20for%20over%2030%20years,%20I%20find%20it%20very%20simple%20and%20in%20fact,%20tasty%20and%20most%20enjoyable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20there%20it%20is!%20Next%20Monday%20-%20don%E2%80%99t%20eat%20meat%20and%20do%20your%20bit%20to%20save%20this%20beautiful%20planet%20of%20ours.%20For%20more%20information,%20ideas%20and%20lots%20of%20meat%20free%20recipes,%20go%20to%20the%20official%20Meat%20Free%20Monday%20website.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanks%20Goopsters!%20Thanks%20Gwyneth!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERock%20on%20ya%E2%80%99ll!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPaul%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
