%20filling%20the%20cart%20with%20everything%20in%20sight%20not%20just%20for%20the%20storm%20itself,%20but%20for%20the%20week.%20Not%20a%20terribly%20logical%20action,%20you%20might%20say-%20stocking%20up%20on%20perishables%20before%20entering%20a%20period%20where%20power%20(and%20thus%20refrigeration)%20loss%20was%20highly%20probably-%20and%20you%E2%80%99d%20be%20right.%20I%20guess%20fortune%20favored%20the%20foolish%20and%20we%20were%20lucky%20enough%20to%20retain%20electricity%20throught%20the%20ordeal%20and%20my%20shoulder,%20roasted%20all%20day%20Saturday,%20was%20safe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20not%20going%20to%20go%20into%20the%20entire%20process%20here,%20as%20the%20Good%20Eats%20eps%20are%20up%20on%20youtube,%20but%20I%20will%20make%20some%20comments,%20especially%20to%20anyone%20thinking%20of%20attempting%20this%20sublime%20and%20demanding%20art.%20First,%20I%20de-boned%20the%20entire%20pork%20shoulder%20myself%20as%20the%20store%20only%20had%20one%20(I%20guess%20they%20figured%20not%20too%20many%20folks%20need%208%20lb%20pork%20roasts%20the%20day%20before%20a%20hurricane%E2%80%A6%20ha!)%20and%20it%20was%20intact.%20I%20do%20not%20regret%20this,%20but%20I%20did%20not%20remove%20all%20the%20little%20scraggly%20(but%20otherwise%20fine)%20meat%20bits%20from%20the%20incision%20site,%20thinking%20they%20would%20be%20fine.%20Unfortunately,%20once%20brined%20they%20became%20jerky-like%20and%20I%20had%20to%20discard%20them%20anyway.%20I%20used%20the%20brine%20formulation%20Alton%20recommends,%20though%20my%20shoulders%20come%20out%20a%20bit%20saltier%20than%20I%20am%20accustomed%20to%20in%20normal%20%E2%80%98cue,%20so%20each%20time%20I%20attempt%20this,%20I%20add%20less%20or%20let%20it%20sit%20for%20a%20shorter%20time.%20I%20managed%20to%20get%20to%20195%20degrees%20(F)%20in%20my%20smoker%20this%20time,%20which%20is%20quite%20hot,%20but%20I%E2%80%99d%20really%20like%20to%20get%20the%20whole%20thing%20just%20over%20200.%20I%E2%80%99d%20also%20like%20more%20smoke.%20Both%20can%20be%20achieved%20with%20better%20heat%20control%20and%20possibly%20more/smaller/drier%20hickory%20chips.%20I%E2%80%99ll%20admit%20the%20bark%20looked%20great,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20still%20tinkering%20with%20a%20dry%20rub%20that%20is%20as%20subtle%20as%20it%20is%20significant.%20I%20feel%20onion%20powder%20is%20somehow%20the%20key.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIs%20this%20all%20together%20too%20much%20trouble%20for%20what%20is%20in%20essence%20a%20grown%20man%20playing%20with%20giant%20pieces%20of%20food?%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20so.%20All%20told%20I%E2%80%99m%20probably%20into%20this%20whole%20endeavor%20for%20about%20$100%20(equipment%20and%20food%20together)%20and%20all%20the%20results%20are%20edible%20and%20its%20a%20hell%20of%20a%20lot%20of%20fun,%20spending%20Saturday%20with%20the%20three%20B%E2%80%99s:%20barbecue,%20building%20stuff%20and%20barely%20obeying%20local%20fire%20codes.%20Be%20safe,%20be%20adventurous%20and%20until%20next%20time,%20cook%20on!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
