Millefiori "Thousand Flowers" A Celebration of Exotic Liqueur.

12/31/2012, 23:57 hours, New Years Eve, Just about time to fire the concussion pot on my pier, the neighborhood ritual, sorta feels like somebody turned gravity off for a short time and then turned it back on, your house slams 3"back to the foundation. A nice "little sonic boom" ( 2 TBS freshly catalyzed powder) to welcome 2013, 23:59:00, safety protocol dictates a pre-detonation check of the event field, all clear, sound the stand clear warning, 00:00:00 hours, a brief click to detonate the squib, KFB!! OK, that's done, now hide the pyrotechnics til July 4th.

The Linux laptop has Amarok, (pretty cool 50GB 8000+ tracks) playing Bill Evans Trio, Jimmy Smith, Jeff Beck and Etta James thru the house system.....all is good... Obviously I've had my liquid lobotomy for the "Holidaze".

This year my promise was to knockoff "Millefiori" a taste I haven't savored since Tina and Bernardo’s pizzeria on Devon Ave in Chicago, a lifetime ago.

Millefiori or Thousand Flowers, a delightful sublime liqueur which hasn’t been made since 1958, a gorgeous triangular bottle filled with a golden-amber liquid of indescribable properties submerging a small branch of an unknown tree with crystals of sugar forming on the branch. in a delight of exotically spiced yeast excrement Obviously meddling attorneys had something to do with the untimely extinction of Millefiori.

I found this "knockoff" in A.J. Rahtbun's "Luscious Liqueurs" which is still in print and I strongly recommend to all that care so for treasures lost. I have made this twice in the last few months, to my best memory this is a pretty good knockoff.

  1. Grind the Coriander seeds in a mortar and pestle, add the fresh mint leaves and bruise the mint leaves to release the essential oils but don't destroy the leaves.
  2. Empty the contents of the mortar - pestle and remaining ingredients (excluding the simple syrup) into a large glass jar with sealable lid, stir vigorously and seal lid. Put in a cool, dry and dark place for 2 weeks, agitating it gently every other day.
  3. Add the simple syrup, stir very well and reseal, return it to it's cool, dry, dark place of convalescence for another 2 weeks gently agitating every other day.
  4. Finally, filter the liquid through a fine mesh filter ( I use a "Gold permanent coffee filter" ) now filter the liquid through several layers of cheesecloth, repeat until the desired level of clarity is achieved.
  5. Now, sterilize a large bottle or several small ones with sealable lids and pour this nectar of divinity for consumption or gifts,
  6. Mission Accomplished!
  7. <=======Simple Syrup=======>
