Receta Mini Meat Loaves, Creamy Mushroom Sauce
We love meat loaf (I may have mentioned that).
Usually I make a large one with plenty leftover for sandwiches.
But that’s winter cooking and I’m not in the mood for winter cooking.
But mon mari didn’t quite have the barbecue grills (he has three…. plus a smoker) ready last week so a giant, stuffed hamburger was out.
We compromised on mini meat loaves.
The nice thing about the smaller size (besides getting my share) is they’re ready in 45 minutes.
Mini Meat Loaves, Creamy Mushroom Sauce
Total time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
- 12oz (360gr) ground beef (mince)
- 1 egg
- 3 tbs bread crumbs
- 1 tbs mushroom soy sauce substitute regular soy sauce
- 2 tbs ketchup
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- 1 tsp dried marjoram
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp smoky paprika
- Mushroom Sauce:
- 6oz (180gr) cremini mushrooms, chopped
- 3 shallots, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 cup (8oz, 240ml) beef stock
- 1/3 cup (3oz, 90gr) Greek yogurt
- 1 tbs cornstarch (maizena, corn flour) dissolved in 2 tbs water
Instructions:
In large bowl lightly beat egg with a fork.
Add soy sauce, ketchup, crumbs, herbs, spices, and mix well.
Add beef and mix well – best to use your hand, kneading it like bread dough.
Shape into two small loaves and put them into a shallow roasting pan large enough to hold it with room on all sides.
Bake at 400F (200C) for 30 minutes.
Remove and spoon some (or all, depending on pan size) mushroom sauce over the top.
Bake 10 minutes longer or until done.
Remove, slice if you like and serve, remaining sauce on the side.
Mushroom Sauce:
Heat oil in a medium skillet. Add shallots and sauté 5 minutes.
Add mushrooms, garlic, paprika and sauté until well browned.
Add beef stock and bring to a simmer.
Dissolve cornstarch in water and add to skillet, stirring until thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in yogurt. Set aside until needed.
I have a headache.
To be honest, it’s a self-inflicted headache, resulting from repeated slaps to my forehead and the occasional thump of my head hitting the new washer.
It’s not that I don’t have directions, I do.
To digress a moment….. There is an art to writing clear instructions. Very few people who actually write instructions are capable of doing a good job.
They know too much. They assume other people know stuff, too. They forget to add the obvious to the guide.
Back in the beginning of time, when I worked with computers (main frames), I reviewed instructions. There was one employee who had the ability to screw up absolutely every key stroke and step of every application. She was wonderful. We wrote our instructions for her.
Back to the washer….
Without going into details, I’ll just say that I set on the floor for 15 minutes with both sets of instructions before I managed to get the, still wet, soapy pile of laundry from two days earlier, started on a wash cycle.
I really only wanted a rinse and spin, but that escaped me. As it was I ran it through a ‘delicate’ cycle, because the normal cycle said it would take 3 1/2 hours.
3 1/2 hours to do a load of laundry??????
There are 20 options for wash cycles including one for baby clothes, colors that bleed, athletic clothes and duvets. There are 10 choices for water temperatures, ranging from cold, then every 10 degrees Celsius from 20C through 90C. And there are 6 spin speeds. There are other options, but you get the idea.
Today, I did a lot of laundry…. I’m doing the spring cleaning, so I’m washing rugs and dog beds, etc.
I played with all of the options.
It started to make sense, but I was still worried that the ‘recommended cycle for energy efficiency’. took 3 1/2 hours. I mean, we bought the machine because it was efficient!
Nothing I did today took longer than 90 minutes.
I watched the start of each load…..
Finally, my brain registered what I was seeing.
After I hit the start button, the drum rocked back and forth for 20 or 30 seconds before anything happened. Then the cycle started and the time to finish appeared on the screen.
It seems that the machine is determining the weight of the laundry and calculating the time needed to do a proper job.
No where in the manual did anything suggest that this would happen. I thought it was odd that the water didn’t start immediately but thought it had something to do with heating it,
Anyway, when I put in the sopping wet, partially washed, pile of leftover laundry the machine apparently decided I was doing bullet-proof vests and calculated the time accordingly.
I put in a load of regular laundry, selected that cycle and the time was 1 hour and 23 minutes, not 3 hours and 37 minutes.
I now know how to use our new washing machine.
I think.
Did I mention that I can program and start the laundry from my smart phone?
Can anyone tell me why I would want to do that? I mean, if my smart phone could sort the laundry and put it in the machine we might have something, but as long as I’m right there I might as well turn it on.
