%20Heart%20Pie%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBroken%20hearts%20are%20messy.%20%20As%20is%20this%20(Broken)%20Heart%20Pie.%20%20In%20my%20mind%20my%20submission%20for%20Pietopia%E2%80%99s%20friendly%20competition%20which%20asks%20%E2%80%9Cwhat%20does%20your%20life%20taste%20like,%20in%20a%20pie?%E2%80%9D%20was%20a%20bit%20more%20elegant,%20a%20bit%20more%20pulled%20together.%20%20But%20I%20guess%20that%E2%80%99s%20the%20thing%20about%20a%20broken%20heart%20in%20a%20dusty%20kitchen.%20%20Things%20aren%E2%80%99t%20always%20going%20to%20come%20out%20the%20way%20you%20had%20hoped.%20%20And%20that%E2%80%99s%20okay.%20%20Just%20like%20I%20will%20be.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20%E2%80%9Cwhat%20does%20my%20life%20taste%20like,%20in%20a%20pie?%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERed%20fruits,%20lots%20of%20them;%20rich%20and%20luscious%20and%20sweet%20and%20syrupy.%20%20Candied%20nuts.%20%20Ginger.%20%20Cinnamon.%20%20Molasses.%20%20Warm%20flavors.%20%20All%20things%20ripe%20and%20sweet%20and%20full%20of%20color%20and%20bursting%20with%20love.%20%20For%20as%20much%20as%20my%20heart%20is%20very%20much%20broken,%20it%20is%20still%20bursting%20with%20love.%20%20Both%20for%20the%20person%20who%20broke%20it,%20and%20for%20myself.%20%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20been%20in%20such%20a%20humbled%20position.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20the%20creation.%20%20I%20decided%20to%20cut%20myself%20some%20slack%20and%20not%20make%20homemade%20ginger%20molasses%20cookies,%20as%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20in%20my%20apartment%20with%20my%20arsenal%20of%20tools.%20%20I%20picked%20up%20a%20box%20of%20Ginger%20Cookies%20with%20Sliced%20Almonds%20from%20Pamela%E2%80%99s%20Products.%20%20They%E2%80%99re%20very%20moist%20and%20gluten%20and%20dairy%20free,%20so%20all%20I%20had%20to%20do%20was%20crush%20them,%20mix%20them%20with%20about%203%20Tbsp%20of%20melted%20unsalted%20butter,%20press%20into%20a%20pie%20plate%20and%20bake%20for%20a%20bit.%20%20I%20should%20have%20bought%20two%20boxes,%20to%20make%20a%20fuller%20crust,%20or%20gotten%20off%20my%20tush%20and%20made%20a%20pie%20crust%20as%20I%20have%20dozens%20for%20times%20before.%20%20But%20again,%20dusty.%20%20So%20the%20crust%20only%20covers%20the%20bottom%20and%20slightly%20up%20the%20sides.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20guess%20this%20is%20more%20like%20a%20(Broken)%20Heart%20Cobbler.%20%20Same%20difference.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20recipe%20for%20the%20filling%20is%20below,%20and%20I%20suggest%20your%20favorite%20sweet%20crust%20%E2%80%93%20using%20a%20ginger%20snap%20or%20molasses%20cookie%20seems%20to%20suit%20these%20fruits%20perfectly.%20%20And%20because%20of%20the%20cookies%20I%20used%20this%20pie%20was%20gluten-free.%20%20And%20had%20I%20used%20Earth%20Balance%20instead%20of%20the%20butter%20in%20the%20crust,%20it%E2%80%99d%20be%20dairy-free%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20I%20only%20had%20a%20small%20bite%20of%20the%20final%20product,%20I%20can%20promise%20you%20this%20pie%20(cobbler,%20whatever),%20is%20very%20luscious,%20very%20sweet,%20and%20almost%20sanguine.%20%20The%20cast*%20gobbled%20it%20down%20after%20our%20run-through%20tonight%20and%20seemed%20pleased,%20saying%20they%20were%20fortified%20with%20the%20fruit%20and%20nut%20combination,%20and%20it%20disappeared%20quickly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn%E2%80%99t%20tell%20them%20the%20name:%20(Broken)%20Heart%20Pie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20pie%20crust%20of%20choice%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrepare%20whichever%20pie%20crust%20you%20prefer,%20and%20blind-bake%20it%20(bake%20it%20without%20anything%20in%20it)%20until%20done.%20%20Remove%20from%20heat%20while%20you%20prepare%20the%20filling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20pitted%20cherries%20in%20a%20large,%20preferably%20non-stick%20pot%20or%20dutch%20oven.%20%20Bring%20to%20medium%20heat%20and%20allow%20some%20of%20the%20cherry%20juices%20to%20reduce,%20around%20five%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20raspberries%20and%20strawberries,%20and%20continue%20to%20cook%20until%20the%20mixture%20first%20bubbles%20with%20juice,%20and%20then%20begins%20to%20reduce,%20about%208%20minutes.%20%20You%20want%20the%20mixture%20to%20still%20have%20some%20juice,%20but%20not%20so%20much%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20overwhelming%20the%20fruit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20from%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhisk%20together%20the%20sugar%20and%20starch,%20and%20pour%20over%20fruit.%20%20Mix%20thoroughly%20until%20incorporated%20(if%20you%E2%80%99re%20using%20honey,%20add%20that%20first%20and%20mix%20in,%20and%20then%20the%20starch).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EReturn%20to%20low%20heat%20and%20continue%20stirring%20gently%20until%20the%20mixture%20thickens.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20from%20heat%20and%20allow%20to%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20almost%20cool,%20stir%20in%20dried%20cherries%20and%20almonds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFill%20crust.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESet%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20until%20completely%20chilled%20before%20serving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*Shameless%20plug:%20I%E2%80%99m%20performing%20in%20Enchanted%20April%20at%20the%20Hampton%20Theater%20Company,%20running%20from%20May%2026th%20
