,%20and%20have%20had%20some%20great%20results.%20In%20that%20time%20but%20before%20Whole%2030,%20I%20had%20lost%2023%20lbs%20and%20several%20inches%20from%20various%20parts%20of%20my%20body.%20I%20also%20just%20began%20to%20wear%20some%20of%20my%20%22skinny%20clothes%22%20I%20kept%20in%20my%20closet.%20Keeping%20those%20old%20clothes%20was%20a%20good%20way%20to%20determine%20my%20progress.%20As%20far%20as%20my%20approach%20to%20Paleo,%20I%20mainly%20ate/eat%20vegetables,%20meat,%20and%20oils%20like%20coconut%20and%20olive,%20some%20fruit,%20nuts,%20and%20seeds,%20a%20little%20dairy%20(cheese%20and%20yogurt),%20and%20sensible%20indulges%20of%20wine%20and%20dark%20chocolate.%20I%20already%20felt%20quite%20disciplined,%20however%20social%20gatherings%20still%20caused%20stress.%20Sometimes%20I%20would%20give%20in%20an%20have%20a%20taste%20of%20non-Paleo%20foods%20when%20pressured%20to,%20and%20though%20I%20was%20eating%2080/20%20(80%25%20adherence,%2020%25%20modern%20concessions)%20I%20felt%20like%20the%2020%25%20was%20keeping%20me%20from%20performing%20my%20best.%20So,%20my%20goal%20for%20Whole%2030%20was%20to%20build%20up%20some%20willpower%20in%20these%20social%20situations%20and%20be%20more%20assertive%20at%20saying%20%22no.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20wanted%20to%20try%20a%20Whole%2030%20several%20times%20all%20year,%20but%20I%20kept%20having%20excuses%20like%20%22I%20don't%20want%20to%20add%20the%20stress%20of%20watching%20what%20I%20eat%20so%20closely%20during%20finals%22%20or%20%22I'm%20going%20to%20a%20conference%20soon%20and%20I%20won't%20have%20as%20much%20control%20over%20what%20I%20eat.%22%20Finally,%20when%20I%20didn't%20have%20any%20more%20excuses,%20I%20knew%20I%20was%20ready.%20It%20was%20summer%20so%20I%20wasn't%20on%20campus%20because%20I%20wasn't%20taking%20any%20classes.%20Because%20I%20wouldn't%20be%20in%20my%20office%20much%20there%20would%20be%20less%20temptation%20with%20any%20desserts%20being%20brought%20into%20the%20office.%20Also,%20there%20would%20be%20little%20chance%20that%20I%20would%20be%20stuck%20on%20campus%20only%20to%20resort%20to%20pre-packaged%20salads%20and%20nuts%20that%20could%20have%20questionable%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDuring%20the%20first%20four%20days,%20I%20felt%20a%20little%20more%20tired%20than%20normal.%20I%20remarked%20that%20it%20was%20also%20cloudy%20during%20those%20days,%20which%20may%20make%20me%20tired,%20but%20it%20also%20could%20have%20been%20minor%20changes%20in%20my%20diet.%20After%20that,%20I%20perked%20up%20a%20lot%20and%20by%20day%2010%20I%20remember%20feeling%20like%20I%20had%20ingested%20rocket%20fuel%20because%20I%20had%20such%20great%20energy!%20Eating%20meals%20on%20my%20own%20was%20not%20a%20struggle%20for%20me;%20it%20was%20not%20too%20big%20of%20a%20change%20after%20nearly%20a%20year%20of%20eating%20Paleo.%20Social%20occasions%20were%20another%20story.%20I%20knew%20they%20would%20be%20a%20challenge,%20yet%20thankfully%20some%20folks%20didn't%20even%20remark%20when%20I%20said%20I%20was%20doing%20a%20diet%20challenge.%20Others%20tried%20the%20%22everything%20in%20moderation%22%20line%20that%20I%20think%20it%20total%20bunk...even%20a%20moderate%20amount%20of%20wheat%20would%20set%20me%20up%20for%20nasty%20bloat!%20I%20had%20to%20reinforce%20in%20myself%20the%20idea%20that%20it%20was%20about%20the%20people%20I%20was%20around,%20not%20what%20I%20was%20eating.%20As%20a%20busy%20grad%20student,%20having%20the%20relief%20of%20eating%20out%20every%20once%20and%20a%20while%20is%20nice,%20too.%20I%20made%20concessions%20such%20as%20choosing%20a%20salad%20bar%20or%20eating%20at%20Freebirds,%20a%20Texas-based%20restaurant%20that%20serves%20grass-fed%20beef%20and%20hormone-free%20meat.%20I%20thought%20it%20was%20a%20good%20choice,%20so%20I%20ate%20there%20several%20times.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn't%20feel%20deprived%20at%20all%20because%20I%20had%20a%20lot%20of%20seasonal%20fruits%20and%20vegetables%20to%20keep%20my%20meals%20interesting.%20Therefore%20I%20think%20summer%20is%20the%20best%20time%20to%20do%20Whole%2030%20because%20in%20winter%20you%20wouldn't%20have%20so%20much%20variety%20or%20would%20be%20buying%20off-season%20vegetables%20and%20fruits,%20which%20never%20have%20that%20much%20flavor.%20Overall,%20it%20is%20not%20hard%20to%20do%20a%20Whole%2030%20if%20you%20are%20truly%20dedicated%20to%20your%20health.%20It's%20not%20like%20cancer%20treatment%20or%20like%20someone%20asked%20you%20to%20chop%20off%20a%20leg...it's%2030%20days%20of%20no%20sugar,%20industrial%20oils,%20grains,%20legumes,%20and%20alcohol...no%20big%20deal,%20right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20I%20wanted%20to%20keep%20my%20workouts%20about%20that%20same%20to%20not%20introduce%20a%20confounding%20variable%20into%20my%20little%20experiment,%20I%20was%20performing%20so%20much%20better%20at%20the%20gym%20by%20around%20day%2015%20that%20I%20started%20pushing%20myself.%20I%20was%20lifting%20maybe%205%20or%208%20lbs%20when%20I%20started,%20but%20by%20the%20end%20I%20was%20up%20to%2015,%2020,%20and%2025%20lbs!%20I%20also%20improved%20on%20the%20Lifecycle%20recumbent%20bike%20from%20level%205%20to%20level%207.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20are%20my%20results:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUpper%20arm,%20right:%200.5%22%20%20%20%20left:%200.5%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChest:%200%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWaist:%202%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHips:%200.75%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThighs:%20right:%200.25%22%20%20%20left:%200.25%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20first%20weighed%20myself,%20and%20was%20disappointed%20to%20see%20only%20a%20pound%20drop.%20But%20to%20lose%20over%204%20inches%20in%20a%20month%20but%20only%201%20lb%20indicated%20to%20me%20that%20I%20probably%20gained%20some%20muscle,%20which%20is%20fine%20by%20me!%20I%20am%20really%20glad%20I%20took%20pictures%20of%20before%20and%20after,%20because%20they%20were%20my%20favorite%20part.%20I%20took%20the%20pics%20in%20a%20sports%20bra%20for%20my%20own%20benefit%20,%20but%20I%20didn't%20feel%20comfortable%20posting%20them%20on%20the%20internet%20so%20I%20threw%20a%20tight-fitting%20(well,%20it%20was%20tight-fitting)%20t-shirt%20on%20top.%20Hopefully%20I'm%20not%20deluding%20myself%20in%20seeing%20the%20differences,%20because%20to%20me%20there%20were%20a%20lot%20of%20little%20changes%20between%20the%20before%20and%20after.%20Another%20thing%20that%20felt%20awesome%20was%20that%20my%20usual%20work%20shorts%20were%20practically%20hanging%20on%20me%20by%20the%20end;%20I%20got%20new%20shorts%20with%20a%20waist%20measurement%203%20inches%20smaller!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20front-viewAfter%20front-viewBefore%20back-viewAfter%20back-viewBefore%20side-viewAfter%20side-view%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
