On January 2nd, Craig and I decided to drive down Highway One to visit Big Sur, California. It was a beautiful day, and we thoroughly enjoyed the 45 minute drive to our final destination. I've lived here for most of my life, and I never tire of it. I love days when there is still a light misting of coast fog-- this was around 10:30am.
We arrived at Nepenthe's Restaurant about 11:00am. If you arrive much later, it's hard to get our favorite spot. This is the view from our lunch table...

.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20of%20the%20breads%20were%20sold%20out.%20%20%20I%20met%20one%20of%20the%20owner's,%20%22Mike%22,%20who%20was%20very%20friendly.%20%20If%20we%20had%20more%20time,%20I%20wish%20that%20I%20could%20have%20asked%20to%20see%20his%20bakery--%20and%20to%20ask%20him%20some%20questions.%20Next%20time,%20perhaps.%20The%20Dresden%20Stollen%20he%20has%20baked%20was%20beautiful--%20at%20$18.00.%20%20It%20was%20tempting...%20but%20I%20didn't%20buy%20one.%20I%20think%20I'm%20still%20trying%20to%20detox%20from%20so%20much%20sugar%20carbs!%20See%20those%20cupcakes?%20$4.50%20each!%20%20I%20bought%20one%20vanilla%20cupcake.%20%20I%20can%20understand%20why%20it%20was%20so%20pricey--the%20cupcake%20was%20filled%20with%20a%20delicious%20pastry%20cream,%20and%20I%20could%20see%20the%20vanilla%20seeds.%20%20It's%20all%20about%20organic%20ingredients,%20which%20aren't%20cheap.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20had%20already%20eaten%20lunch,%20but%20their%20prices%20were%20right%20up%20there--%20$17.00%20on%20up%20for%20breakfast.%20Then%20again,%20this%20is%20a%20little%20away%20from%20civilization%20and%20the%20locals%20need%20to%20make%20a%20living.%20Besides,%20it's%20all%20about%20the%20view--%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20establishment%20has%20also%20published%20a%20beautiful%20cookbook%20called%20(appropriately)%20%22The%20Big%20Sur%20Bakery%20Cookbook:%20A%20Year%20in%20the%20Life%20of%20a%20Restaurant%22,%20which%20is%20also%20photographed%20by%20Sara%20Remington.%20%20This%20was%20my%20first%20time%20visiting%20this%20establishment.%20%20The%20next%20time%20that%20we%20drive%20to%20Big%20Sur,%20I%20hope%20to%20try%20a%20meal%20at%20this%20restaurant--%20maybe%20in%20the%20summer.%20%20%20I%20will%20tell%20you%20that,%20as%20we%20drove%20home,%20I%20stopped%20at%20Border's%20Bookstore%20to%20grab%20a%20copy%20of%20the%20Big%20Sur%20Bakery%20Cookbook%20and%20Nepenthe's%20Cookbook.%20I%20found%20a%20comfy%20chair%20and%20started%20to%20examine%20both%20books:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20very%20selective%20about%20what%20cookbooks%20I'll%20purchase.%20For%20one,%20I%20have%20limited%20storage%20space.%20%20Good%20pictures%20are%20what%20I%20am%20looking%20for.%20I%20am%20totally%20visual--%20and%20I%20am%20more%20inspired%20to%20make%20a%20recipe%20if%20I%20can%20see%20a%20photo--%20which%20is,%20obviously,%20why%20I%20love%20food%20blogs!%20%20The%20photos%20are%20stunning!%20I%20decided%20to%20buy%20the%20Nepenthe's%20cookbook,%20first.%20I%20spotted%20at%20least%20a%20dozen%20recipes%20that%20I%20want%20to%20make.%20%20The%20Big%20Sur%20Bakery%20Cookbook%20is%20gorgeous--%20there%20is%20an%20emphasis%20on%20sustainable,%20organic%20and%20locally%20grown%20ingredients.%20If%20you%20live%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20%22nowhere%22,%20you%20might%20find%20it%20a%20challenge%20to%20make%20some%20of%20the%20recipes.%20Still,%20there's%20something%20for%20everyone--%20as%20long%20as%20you%20are%20willing%20to%20forego%20any%20kind%20of%20frozen%20or%20processed%20foods.%20%20I%20definitely%20plan%20to%20buy%20this%20book,%20too.%20It's%20on%20my%20Amazon%20Wish%20List.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20we%20headed%20hone,%20Craig%20took%20me%20off%20the%20beaten%20path,%20where%20tourists%20don't%20go...%20because%20he%20knows%20how%20much%20I%20love%20Coastal%20Redwood%20Trees...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...%20and%20brooks.%20%20How%20I%20wish%20I%20could%20sit%20here,%20right%20now,%20and%20listen%20to%20the%20sound%20of%20water.%20%20But,%20back%20to%20reality%20and%20our%20jobs,%20we%20go--%20with%20a%20feeling%20of%20gratitude.%20%20I%20hope%20to%20be%20back%20into%20blogging,%20by%20this%20weekend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20ever%20find%20yourself%20on%20the%20Central%20Coast%20of%20California--%20Big%20Sur%20is%20a%20%22must%20see%22%20part%20of%20your%20tour.%20%20We%20need%20to%20come%20here%20more%20often.%20%20%20It's%20still%20%22Bohemian%22%20in%20many%20ways,%20but%20that's%20what%20I%20love%20about%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETill%20then,%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
